Seavers in the News -- Gertrude Evelyn Seaver (1896-1925) Dies in Kellogg, Idaho

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the The Spokesman-Review [Spokane, Wash.] newspaper dated 21 July 1925:

The transcription of the article is:

"Mrs. G.E. Seaver Succumbs

"KELLOGG, Idaho. July 18. -- Mrs. Gertrude Evelyn Seaver, age 28, died at the Wardner hospital today.  She is survived by her husband, three children and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stewart."

The source citation is:

Unfortunately, the death notice does not provide more information.  It had all the characteristics of a family tree mystery because it named only her parents and not her husband or three children.  When I searched for Gertrude Stewart in my RootsMagic family tree, I found her and her family immediately.  But there's a twist here.

Gertrude Evelyn Stewart, born 29 September 1896 (in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England) married, first to Gordon Raymond Seaver (1888-1918) on 30 September 1914 in Creston, British Columbia, Canada.  They had one child:

*  Rose Mollie Seaver (1915-1995), who married Theodore August Hering (1898-1975) in 1935.

After Gordon Raymond Seaver died in 1918, Gertrude married his brother, Clifford Marion Seaver (1894-1951) on 25 July 1919 in Spokane, Washington.  They had two children:

*  Dorothy Marion Seaver (1919-2002), married John D. Gerick (1918-1871) and Rolland A. Kimball (1929-1999). 

*  Clifford Daniel Seaver (1922-1990), married Ruth Margaret Farrell (1921-1999).

Gordon Raymond Seaver (1888-1918) and Clifford Marion Seaver (1894-1951) were sons of Daniel Horace Seaver (1848-1924) and Mary Ellen "Molly" Snyder (1867-1898).

The children of Gertrude Evelyn (Stewart) (Seaver) Seaver are my 9th cousins once removed.  

Gertrude's death left three children, aged 10, 5 and 3 to be raised by Clifford Seaver.  There is a death certificate available on Ancestry.com in the "Idaho Death Records, 1890-1967" record collection which adds more information:

The cause of death is listed as puerpural peritonitis caused by a miscarriage after a fall, suffering for five days.  Her parents are named as Robert Stewart and Martha Louise Smith. The informant is C.M. Seaver, certainly her husband.  This is a family tragedy - a young woman bringing another child into the world and they not only lose the child but the mother also.  

There are over 9,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and  sometimes it is a tragic life story. I am glad that I can honor Gertrude Evelyn (Stewart) (Seaver) Seaver today.
