Seavers in The News - Colonel George Seaver Dies in 1938 in San Francisco

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Oakland [Calif.] Tribune newspaper dated 9 March 1938:

The transcription of the article is:

"SEAVER FUNERAL TO BE PRIVATE

"Private funeral services for Col. George Seaver, 60, former Oakland resident, and investigator for the alcohol tax unit of the U.S. Inrternal Revenue Service, who died yesterday in the Veteran's Hospital at Fort Miley, San Francisco, after a long illness, will be held tomorrow at the San Francisco Presidio.  He will be buried in the National Cemetery at the Presidio in San Francisco.

"Colonel Seaver, once a member of Liscum Camp, U.S.W.V., was a member of Company L, of the First Cavalry, Col. Theodore Roosevelt's 'Rough Riders,' and saw service in the Spanish-American War, and with the Philippine Islands police.

"Leaving the islands after 25 year, he became a deputy prohibition administrator for California and Nevada.  During the World War he served as a colonel, and held that rank in the Army Reserve Corps at the time of his death.  He was born in St. Joseph, Mo."

The source citation is:

"Seaver Funeral to be Private," Oakland [Calif.] Tribune newspaper, obituary, Wednesday, 9 March 1938, page 5, column 5, Col. George Seaver obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 6 August 2020).

This obituary provides a death date, a death place, plus information about his birth date, and military service. It says nothing about parents, siblings, spouse and children or other relatives.

George Herbert Seaver (1878-1938) was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, the youngest child and son of George Abram and Harriet Newel (Denison) Seaver.  He married Neville "Nell" Van Cleave (1877-1933), and they had three children:

*  Mark Harding Seaver (1907-1986), married 1934 Theresa Noel Keith (1908-1998).
*  Margaret E. Seaver (1908-????), married 1932 Max Edward Turner (1907-????).
*  Marion J. Seaver (1910-1991), married 1958 George H. Hauerken (1910-1991).

I am not related to George Seaver through the Seaver line.  His father, George Abram Seaver, was born in England in about 1829.

There are over 9,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and some people serve their country for their entire career.  I am glad that I can honor Colonel George Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors, or will provide more information about them to me.
