An Ancestry Photo Hint appeared over the weekend with the photo below:
I recalled seeing this photograph in my vast collection, but I recognized only one person - my great-grandmother Georgianna (Kemp) Auble (1868-1952) on the far right. I didn't know where the photograph was taken, when it was taken, or who all the people were. I suspected that it was of the Kemp family that Georgianna was related to.
The information on the top of the image and to the right of the image solve those problems. At the top, it says "San Diego 1928" and on the right the image above says:

The Ancestry tree that this photograph was included in was that of Joe Corkery, who is a descendant of Melvina Marylis "Minnie" (Kemp) Trembley (1866-1929) of Ontario, Canada, widow of James Henry Trembley (1865-1918) of Ontario. She must have come to California to visit her California siblings, and an Aunt, in January 1928. Minnie, or one of her children, probably identified the people in the photograph on the back of the photo and the photo was passed down through her family to Joe Corkery.
Minnie, Sarah, Georgianna and James Kemp are children of James and Mary Jane (Sovereen) Kemp, and Frank is the son of James Kemp and his second wife, Melissa Wilson.
My guess is that the photograph was taken on the front steps of my grandparents home at 2130 Fern Street in San Diego where Georgianna also lived.
Aunt Gertrude (Sovereen) Cole (1851-1938) lived in Los Angeles, California in 1928, and was the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Putman) Sovereen of Norfolk county, Ontario, and the sister of Mary Jane (Sovereen) Kemp (1840-1874).
Sarah Elizabeth Kemp (1861-1946) married Andrew John Cropp (1873-1918), and resided in Chicago, Illinois. She may have come with Minnie on the train to California.
James Alexander Kemp (1872-1934) married Bernice Anice Fuller, and resided in El Monte, Los Angeles County, California. My Carringer grandparents visited this family in Los Angeles occasionally.
Albert Francis Edward "Frank" Kemp (1880-1953) married Ellen Elliott, and resided in Los Angeles, California.
My great-grandmother, Georgianna Kemp (1868-1952) moved to Chicago in about 1890, married Charles Auble (1849-1916) in 1898, and came to San Diego in about 1911. They had one child, my maternal grandmother, Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer (1899-1977), who married Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976).
Minnie, Sarah, and James all had children, and I have several DNA cousins from each of them.
I am so glad to know the names of the people in this photograph after 32 years of wondering. And to know that they saw each other one last time and shared memories of their lives as children and adults. I wish I could have been an amanuensis on the wall while they chatted, laughed, bragged, and cried.
What a lucky find! Of course, if I hadn't put my family tree on Ancestry I never would have seen this photo hint. So luck is again the residue of design! Cousin bait works - this fish found the right hook. Thank you to 3rd cousin Joe Corkery for posting it!
