Carringers in the News -- M.E. Carringer Dies in 1905 in Parsons, Kansas

  It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Parsons [Kansas] Weekly Sun newspaper dated 22 December 1905:

One of Parsons Oldest and Highly Respected Citizen Passes Away

M.E. Carringer, aged 71 years, died this morning at the family home on east Forrest avenue, of enlargement of the liver.  The announcement of death of this pioneer settler, comes as a shock and a surprise to his many friends here, as but few knew that he had been indisposed.  Three months ago Mr. Carringer first complained of illness, but not until a short time before he passed away were fears entertained as to the result of the attack.  This morning at 2 o'clock he sank rapidly and before aid could be given him he died.

"Milton E. Carringer was born in 1834 and had been a resident of Parsons for more than a quarter of a century.  He engaged in the real estate and loan business here years ago and continued in this profession until some weeks ago when his physical condition made it necessary to surrender his office.  Mr. Carringer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a foremost advocate of all the reforms and moral movements started in this community.  The sadness following his demise spreads far beyond the confines of the deceased's home, and wherever he was known sorrow is today expressed that he has ceased to live.

"The funeral services will he held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the First Presbyterian church.  Interment will be made at the Oakwood cemetery.  Dr. Davis, pastor of the church, will conduct the services."

This obituary provides a birth year, death date and place, an age, a presumed cause of death, and some biographical information.  The obituary does not mention any family members. 

Milton Edward Carringer (1834-1905) was born in March 1834 in Sandy Creek, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Isabella (Montgomery) Carringer.  He married Lucia J. "Lucy" McCormick (1837-1917)  in 1858 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.  She was the daughter of Adam and Anna (Holloway) McCormick.  They had two children:

*  Viola Florence Carringer (1860-1936), married (1) 1880 Roy Bowen (1853-1894); (2) 1899 Albert H. Luster (1855-????_; (3) Ike Knight (????-????).

*  Edward V. Carringer (1863-????), married (1) 1887 Elodia B. Clark (1867-????); (2) 1894 Lillian C. Crawford (1874-????).

I am a 1st cousin four times removed to Milton Edward Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851). 

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person's obituary does not name any survivors. I am glad that I can honor Milton Edward Carringer today.
