Seavers in the News - John B. Seaver Dies 1956 in in Batavia, New York

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Democrat and Chronicle [Rochester, N.Y.] newspaper dated 7 December 1956:

The transcription of the article is:

"John Seaver, 75, Dies in Batavia; Schools Auditor

"BATAVIA, Dec. 6 -- John B. Seaver, 75, of 312 E. Main St., auditor for two school districts, member of the Advisory Board of the Bank of Batavia Office of the Marine Trust Co. of Buffalo and an accountant for many years, died today (Dec. 6, 1956) in Genesee Memorial Hospital.

"Mr. Seaver had been in failing health for two months and seriously ill for the past two weeks during which he was in the hospital.

"Born in Byron March 21, 1881, Mr. Seaver was the son of the late Charles A. and Jennie Beecher Seaver.  He had resided in Batavia since 1887.

"For much of his life, Mr. Seaver was a real estate dealer and accountant.  Early in his career, he was employed in the Bank of Batavia for 17 years.  He later worked for the Batavia & New York Woodworking Co., remaining until the business closed in 1923.

"Besides his service on the bank's board, Mr. Seaver was auditor for the Batavia School District and Pavilion Central School District.  for many years, Mr. Seaver served as secretary of the Genesee County Red Cross Board of Directors, giving up the duties only a few weeks ago because of ill health.

"Mr. Seaver was a member of St. James Church, Batavia Lodge 475, F&AM, a member and past president of the Batavia Club and a member and founder of the Stafford Country Club.  He formerly was active in the Chamber of Commerce.

"Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cornelia Southworth Seaver; a sister, Mrs. Wallace G. Stakel of Batavia and several nieces and nephews, including Genesee County Dist. Atty. Wallace J. Stakel.

"The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the H.E. Turner Co. Funeral Home with the Very Rev. John T. Sanborn, rector of St. James Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery."

This obituary provides the name, home address, birth date and place, death date and place, parent's names, spouse's name, sister's name, and information about his education, employment or associations.   

John Beecher Seaver (1881-1956) was born 21 March 1881 in Byron, New York, and died 6 December 1956 in Batavia, New York.  He was the son of Charles Alexander and Jennie Jane (Beecher) Seaver.  He married Cornelia Weed Southworth (1874-1961) on 27 November 1915 in Batavia, New York.  They had no children.

I am an 8th cousin 2 times removed to John Beecher Seaver, with the common Seaver ancestor being Robert Seaver (1608-1683) who came to Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay in 1634.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has an obituary with many life details. I am glad that I can honor John Beecher Seaver today.
