Carringers in the News -- Betty Virginia Carringer Celebrates Her First Birthday in 1920

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the San Diego [Calif.] Union newspaper dated 1 August 1920:

The transcription of the article is:

"Celebrates Birthday With Party for 17

"Little Miss Betty Virginia Carringer celebrated her first birthday Friday with a party given by her mother, Mrs. Lyle L. Carringer, at her home, 2054 Harrison street.  The decorations were in pink and white.

"Those invited were Great Grandma Smith and Grandmothers Carringer and Auble; the Misses Myrtle Kemp, Letha Klughardt, Genevieve Berry; Mrs. Dave Gershon, Mrs. Fred Allen, Mrs. Sherwin Smith, Mrs. James Kerr, Mrs. John McCann; the Little Misses Virginia Kerr, Beulah Irene McCann, Betty Virginia Carringer, and Masters Gordon Gerson, Junior Allen and Sydney Smith."

The source citation is:

"Celebrates Birthday With Party for 17," San Diego [Calif.] Union newspaper, Sunday, 1 August 1920, page 38, column 5, Betty Virginia Carringer birthday party;   GenealogyBank, Newspaper Archives   (https://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 27 December 2021).

Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002) was born 30 July 1919 in San Diego, California, the daughter of Lyle L. and Emily K. (Auble) Carringer.  She married Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983) in 1942.

Betty Virginia (Carringer) Seaver is my sainted mother.  This article corroborates the street address of the Carringer home in late July 1920, and the list of attendees indicates family and friends, especially those with small children.  Myrtle Kemp (1893-1970) is the first cousin of Emily (Auble) Carringer, and the niece of Emily's mother, Georgianna (Kemp) Auble.

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a newspaper article provides more detail about your very close family.  I am glad that I can honor my mother, Betty Virginia Carringer, today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
