Vauxes In the News -- Chaplain William Vaux Dies in 1882 in Santa Cruz, California

  It's time for another edition of "Vauxes in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Vaux (my 2nd great-grandmother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the The San Francisco [Calif.] Examiner newspaper dated 23 July 1882:

The transcription of the article is:

"Death of an Army Chaplain

"Santa Cruz, July 22. -- Chaplain William Vaux of the United States Army, died at his residence this morning of asthmatic troubles, superinduced by old age.  He was 75 years old and a native of England.  The Bencia barracks was his last station.  He came from fort Laramie to this State and has been stationed at various years throughout this country.  For a number of years he has resided in this place, occasionally officiating in the Episcopal church.  In person Chaplain Vaux was very patriarchal looking, and was well known for his benevolent qualities.  He leaves a widow, three daughters and a son, Dr. E.P. Vaux."

William Vaux was born 7 July 1807 in Lewes, Sussex, England.  He married Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Loring (1818-1885) on 10 September 1839 in Romsey, Hampshire, England.  They had six children:

*  Victoria Vaux (1839-1895), married 1863 John W. Gerding (1834-1922).

*  Sylvia Vaux (1843-1899), married Ezra Philetus Ewers (1837-1912.

*  Virginia Vaux (1849-????).

*  Exeter Prudy Vaux (1852-1911), married (1) 1882 Frances Forrester Griffiths (1861-????); married (2) 1893 Annie B. Sylvia (1873-????).

*  Laramie Vaux (1853-1924), married 1883 Cyrus Olney Tillotson (1847-1921).

*  Omega Vaux (1857-1933), married 1881 Hermann Bernard Peyton (1854-1919)

I am not related to William Vaux to my knowledge.  

There are hundreds of Vaux "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a newspaper article provides more detail about your ancestors.  I am glad that I can honor William Vaux today.
