52 Relatives: 2nd Great-GrandUncle John Alfred Oatley (1815-1863) of Rhode Island and Connecticut

John Alfred Oatley was born on 15 January 1815, in South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island, the first child of  Rev. Jonathan Oatley and Amy Champlin.[1-2]  The Jonathan Oatley family moved to East Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut in about 1834 from South Kingstown.

He married Eliza A. Edson on 19 March 1837, in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut by Rev. Daniel Williams.[1,3] They were the parents of:

  • Abby Champlin Oatley, born 10 September 1842, Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States; married Cyrus A. Burroughs, 23 April 1859, Norwich, New London, Connecticut, United States; died 30 January 1913, Scituate, Providence, Rhode Island, United States.
  • Joseph Monroe Oatley, born 11 December 1843, Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States; married Elwyn Eliza Paine, 4 March 1866, Windham, Connecticut, United States; died 17 March 1902, Providence, Rhode Island, United States.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte Oatley was born on 3 October 1846 in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States. He died on 7 August 1851 at the age of 4 in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States.
  • Clarissa Angeline Oatley, born 6 June 1849, Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States; married James Henry Belcher, 29 January 1872, Windham, Connecticut, United States; died 30 June 1906, Woodstock, Windham, Connecticut, United States.
  • John Alfred Oatley was born on 24 May 1852 in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States. He died on 8 June 1853 at the age of 1 in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States. He was also known as John A. Oatley Jr.

In the 1850 United States census, the John A. Oatley family resided in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut.[4]  The household included:

  • John A. Oatley - age 34, male, a spinner, born So. Kingston, RI
  • Eliza A. Oatley - age 31, female, born No. Hampton, Mass.
  • Sarah M. Oatley - age 11 female, born Killingly, Ct, attended school
  • Abby C. Oatley - age 8, female, born Killingly, Ct, attended school
  • Joseph M. Oatley - age 6, male, born Killingly, Ct, attended school
  • Napoleon B. Oatley - age 3, male, born Killingly, Ct.
  • Clarissa A. Oatley - age 2, female, born Killingly, Ct.

John's first wife, Eliza A. (Edson) Oatley died 17 June 1854, leaving for living children.  John married Sophrona (Johnson) Davis before 1860, probably in Windham County, Connecticut, as his second wife. They had no children.

In the 1860 United States census, the John A. Oatley family resided in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut.[5]  The household included:

  • John A. Oatley - age 45, male, an operative, $500 in real property, $400 in personal property, born R.I.
  • Sephaena Oatley - age 44, female, born Maine
  • Joseph M. Oatley - age 16, male, born Conn., attended school
  • Clarissa A. Oatley - age 12, female, born Conn., attended school
  • Napoleon B. Oatley - age 8, male, born Conn., attended school

The entry for Napoleon B. Oatley in the 1860 census appears to be spurious; perhaps the informant noted that he was a child of John and the enumerator wrote it down.

It is not known when Sophrona (Johnson) (Davis) Oatley died.  She is not in the 1870 U.S. Census as an Oatley.

John Alfred Oatley died on 13 June 1863, in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, United States, at the age of 48,[2,6] and was buried in Bartlett Cemetery #1 in Dayville, Windham, Connecticut, United States.[2]

===========================================

John Alfred Oatley (1815-1863) is my 2nd great-granduncle and brother of my 2nd great-grandmother, Amy Frances Oatley (1826-1864).

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-.grandparents and a number of close relatives.  Information about his father, Jonathan Oatley (1790-1872) in 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 39: #46 Jonathan Oatley (1790-1872).

The "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genealogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.

I add links to the 52 Ancestors and 52 Relatives sketches on the 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies page, in my Ancestry Member Tree, in WikiTree, and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.
