52 Relatives: Devier David Carringer (1889-1890) of National City, California

Devier David Carringer was born 19 August 1889 in National City, San Diego County, California, the first son of Henry Austin and Abbey Ardell "Della" Carringer.[1-5]  His name remembers his two grandfathers - David Jackson Carringer and Devier James Smith.

The San Diego Union newspaper announced in the August 24, 1889 edition that:

"Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Carringer rejoice in the arrival of a bright faced boy, who tips the scales at nine pounds."

The joy turned to sorrow when Devier suddenly died on May 10, 1890 in National City, San Diego County, California, at the age of 8 months, 22 days.[6-8] He was buried in La Vista Cemetery in National City, San Diego County, California.[9-10]

A memorial card for Devier David Carringer was passed down through the family over the years.  It says:

"In Loving Remembrance

"Devier Carringer
Died May 10, 1890
Aged 9 Months.

"'One less at home
The charmed circle broken -- a dear face
Missed day by day from its usual place.
But cleansed, saved, perfected by grace,
One more in heaven.'

"'One less on earth
The pain, its sorrow and its toil to share.
One less the pilgrim's daily cross to bear.
One more the crown of the blessed to wear,
At home in heaven.'"

The family archives include several letters from the extended Smith family in Kansas and the extended  Carringer family in Pennsylvania that try to reassure the family that it was God's will.  The death of baby Devier apparently caused Austin and Della to renounce their Christian faith.

====================================

Devier David Carringer (1889-1890) was my granduncle, the brother of my grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976).  I cannot let his memory die.  I cannot imagine the grief experienced by my great-grandparents at this time.  They were alone in San Diego at this time, two years after their marriage.  Della's brother, two sisters and her mother eventually came and lived in San Diego.

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents and a number of close relatives - see the list in 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies.

This "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genealogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree, WikiTree, and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.
