Findmypast Friday: New Workhouse Records, Marriage Records and Newspapers

 I received this information from Findmypast today:

                  ===========================================

Findmypast add new workhouse and marriage records,  along with more than quarter of a million additional newspaper pages.

Lancashire, Oldham Workhouse

This brand new collection sees over 150,000 records from Oldham Workhouse in Lancashire published online. These records cover over 130 years, from 1800-1936, and include both admissions and discharges. The transcripts provide standard biographical information, as well as the admission or event date. While the original record images include details such as notes on the inmate’s state at arrival (including health conditions and financial situation), whether they were on a regular diet or 'infirm' diet, religious persuasion, and reason for discharge.

Huntingdonshire Marriages 1754-1837 Index

Though this collection was originally released as a browsable collection, Findmypast now transcribed these records and released them as a fully searchable index for the first time. The records include full names of both spouses, the year of marriage, and sometimes extra details, such as occupation or whether the spouses were previously widowed.

Anne Angel was born before 26 February 1748/9, when she was baptized in the Lacock, Wiltshire parish church, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth "Betty" (Hiscock) Angel of Lacock[1].

Anne Angel, spinster of Lacock, married on 2 March 1767 in Lacock, Wiltshire to John Maishman, weaver of Lacock[2] in Lacock, Wiltshire.  He was the son of John and Jane (Crook) Marshman of Melksham, Wiltshire.  Both parties signed by mark. They had at least six children:

*  Thomas Marshman (1767-????), born and baptized in Lacock, married 1796 Jane Hambs (1770-1854) in Devizes.
*  Elizabeth Marshman (1777-????), born and baptized in Hilperton.
*  Martha Marshman (1780-1858), born and baptized in Hilperton, married 1802 William Wiltshire (1761-1834) in Calne.
*  James Marshman (1782-1854), born in Hilperton, married 1814 Phoebe Slatford (1782-1849) in Trowbridge.
*  John Marshman (1783-????), born and baptized in Trowbridge.
*  Ann Marshman (1784-1856), born in Devizes, married 1811 John Richman (1789-1867) in Hilperton.

There may be several other children born in Lacock, Hilperton, Trowbridge or Devizes but there are no baptism records.

Anne (Angel) Marshman died before 3 March 1795 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, and was buried in the Hilperton parish[3].

NOTE:  The placing of Ann Marshman (1784-1856) as a daughter of John and Anne (Angel) Marshman  is supported by two DNA matches with common ancestors of John and Anne (Angel) Marshman through son James Marshman (13 cM) and Martha Marshman (10 cM), plus one DNA match with common ancestors of John and Jane (Crook) Marshman.  This is the author's current thinking and is subject to change if new information is obtained.

NOTE:  This genealogical sketch is out of Ahnentafel order because I found new information linking #41 Ann Marshman to her parents, John and Anne (Angel) Marshman.

NOTE: In 2014, Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog. I have extended this theme in 2022 for a ninth year to 468 Ancestors in 468 Weeks. The (incomplete) list of 52 Ancestors biographies from my great-grandparents to the 7th great-grandparents (in work) is in https://www.geneamusings.com/p/ancestor-biographies.html.

Seavers in the News -- Marguerite Grace Seaver Dies in 1964 in Oakland, California

 Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Oakland [Calif.] Tribune newspaper dated 12 November 1964, page 49:

The transcription of the article is:

"Seaver, Marguerite Grace," Oakland [Calif.] Tribune newspaper, Thursday, 12 November 1964, page 49, column 7, Marguerite Grace Seaver death notice; Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 12 May 2022).

This obituary identifies her extended family members, age, and some details about her associations, and also those of her husband.

Marguerite Grace Carmona was born 22 February 1898 in California, the daughter of Francis Steven  and May (Boyd) Carmona.  She died 11 November 1964 in Oakland, California.  She married Guilford Lucian "Gil" Seaver (1898-1966) in about 1917 in California.  They had two children:

*  Lloyd Guilford Seaver (1918-1982).
*  Donald Philip Seaver (1923-2003), married 1948 Billie Ruth Warford (1924-1998).

Guilford Lucien Seaver (1898-1966) is a 6th cousin 3 times removed of mine.  Our most recent common Seaver ancestor is my 8th great-grandfather Shubael Seaver (1640-1730).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has an obituary with much family information.  I am glad that I can honor Marguerite Grace (Carmona) Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

Rabbit Holes With Randy - Record Hints and RootsMagic Data Entry!

 I go down this rabbit hole several times a week - spending an hour or more after dinner or before I go to bed updating my RootsMagic family tree profiles with Record Hints from Ancestry, FamilySearch, and MyHeritage.

I usually access the Record Hints from the website.  Ancestry.com has an "All Hints" link in my Ancestry Member Tree that I can access.  Or I can click on a profile in my Ancestry Member Tree and see the unresolved Hints for that person.  Alternatively, I can access Ancestry WebHints from within RootsMagic.  The process is almost the same in MyHeritage and FamilySearch Family Tree.

If I add a person to my RootsMagic family tree and then TreeShare it to Ancestry, or share information with FamilySearch Family Tree, then Hints are generated almost instantaneously.  On Ancestry, they appear at the top of the Record Hint list.

1)  Here is the Ancestry Member Tree screen showing my current Record Hints for my current family tree:

I have 25,678 Record Hints for persons in my current Ancestry Member Tree.  I try to work through several hundred of these Hints every week to add facts (e.g., birth date/place, death date/place, spouse, marriage date/place, burial information, and more), and source citations to my RootsMagic tree.

I don't add every Hint to my RootsMagic tree - the exception is for my ancestors.  When I'm doing descendancy research (about 90% of my time now), I try to find birth, death, marriage and burial data to add to the profiles in my RootsMagic tree.  I usually don't add census data (the first one on the list above) unless I don't have a spouse and children, or index data (the second one on the list above).

I add information only to my RootsMagic tree by hand - typing it in.  After I have information in a profile, then I can update my Ancestry Member Tree using RootsMagic TreeShare and the FamilySearch Family Tree using FamilySearch Central - both are in the "Publish" tab in RootsMagic.

2)  My process for adding information from a Record Hint to a profile in my RootsMagic tree is to:

a)  Review the record to ascertain if it applies to my target person.  If it doesn't, then I "Ignore" the hint.

b)  I click on the record to see if there is a record image, and if there is, then I review the image and the indexed information from the image.

c)  If it is for my target person, then I add or edit the event, name, date, place and any other fact information from the record.

d)  I add a source citation for the event, and then copy it to add it to other facts (for example, a Find A Grave Hint may have a burial place, a death date and place, a birth date and place, and an alternate name, plus a note if there is a life story or obituary in the memorial - they all get the same source citation.

e)  When I'm on the Record Summary page for the Hint, I check the "Suggested Records" to see if there are other records for the target person.  If there are, then I click on them and add that information so that I don't have to come back to it another time.  Here is an image showing the "Suggested Records" for Franklin W. Seaver on the right-hand side of the screen:

f)  Finally, I go to the Ancestry Member Tree profile and click on the "Search" button on the profile to see if there are more records for the target person (because Ancestry's "Suggested Records" only provides the top 10% of all Ancestry databases).

g)  At the end of the day, or end of the week, I activate the RootsMagic Ancestry TreeShare and upload the updated profile to my Ancestry Member Tree.

h)  I also click on the RootsMagic FamilySearch Central button to add information to the profile on the FamilySearch Family Tree.

i)  I move on to the next Hint on the Record Hint list after marking "Ignore" for the Hint I worked on.  It's still in the Ancestry Hint List, but I don't spend time adding Hints to my Ancestry Member Tree through their Hint system, I prefer using RootsMagic TreeShare to do that.

3)  Unfortunately, I cannot do a "TreeShare" with my MyHeritage family tree.  I make a new  GEDCOM file every year and upload a new tree to MyHeritage, and then check the Hints generated by MyHeritage occasionally.

4)  My RootsMagic family tree continues to grow almost every week - I now have 69,574 profiles in it.  I keep feeding it, and it keeps growing!

5)  Just like a bunny rabbit - this bunny needs some carrots to keep the Record Hints train moving!

Granddaughter Lauren at 2 Months With Neighbors Kurt and Ruth Sax -- Post 719 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

  I can't help it, I can't do a wordless post! This is one of my favorite photographs:

Our second grandchild was Lauren, daughter of daughter Tami, born in February 2005.  This is Lauren at about two months old.  She is being held by Ruth and Kurt Sax, our longtime neighbors on our cul-de-sac in Chula Vista.  Both Ruth and Kurt were Holocaust survivors in Czechoslovakia and Austria, respectively.  They watched our two daughters grow up, loved seeing our grandchildren, celebrated birthdays and holidays with us, and we had many nice dinners out with them over the years.  Kurt died in 2012, and Ruthie died in 2018.    They were beautiful people.

This is all part of my family history!  And Lauren's too!

Vauxes in the News -- Frederick J. Vaux Dies in 1938 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

 It's time for another edition of "Vauxes in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Vaux (my 2nd great-grandmother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Intelligencer Journal [Lancaster, Penn]  newspaper dated 12 December 1938:

The transcription of the article is:

"FRED VAUX DIES OF STROKE; WAS LOCAL ASSESSOR
-------------
Severed Term as City Commissioner Heading Finance Dept.; Funeral on Tuesday

"Frederick John Vaux, sixty seven, 153 E. King st., city assessor and former city commissioner, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's hospital from the effects of a stroke suffered early last Sunday morning.

"Fred Vaux Dies of Stroke; as Local Assessor," Intelligencer Journal [Lancaster, Penn.] newspaper, Monday, 12 December 1938, page 1, column 6, Frederick John Vaux  obituary;   Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 9 May 2022).

Frederick John Vaux (1862-1938) was born in September 1962 in Washington, D.C., the son of Ethan P. and Margaret (Gaskins) Vaux.  He married Ellen E. McAuliff (1865-????) on 25 November 1891 in Washington D.C.  He died 11 December 1938 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  They had four children:

*  Marie Margaret Vaux (1895-????), married 1919 Willard Dent Johnson (1880-1947)
*  Catherine L. Vaux (1897-????)
*  Charlotte Anne Vaux (1898-1976), married Raymond Walter Grove (1895-1975)
*  Helen Vaux (1899-????).

I am a second cousin three times removed to Frederick John Vaux (1862-1938), with common ancestors of James Vaux (1787-1839) and Mary Palmer (1790-1845), who migrated from South Petherton, Somerset, England to Erie County, New York in the early 1830s.

There are hundreds of Vaux "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has an interesting careeer and obituary.  I am glad that I can honor Frederick John Vaux today.

You never know when a descendant, relative or friend will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
