San Diego Central Library Move Video

The San Diego [California] Central Library (currently at 825 E Street in downtown San Diego) is moving to the new building at 12th and J Streets.  There will be a LOT more space at the new library.  The Central Library has a relatively small genealogical book collection, but it has a wealth of archival records, including newspapers, Great Registers, and much more.

The San Diego Genealogical Society collection (currently housed in a rented space in San Diego by the society will be brought into the new Central Library, creating a larger genealogical collection.   You can read more about the combination of the two collections, and about the Central Library, in the press release sent by SDGS to several geneabloggers (but not yours truly... ahem!) in San Diego Central Public Library and the San Diego Genealogical Society: Grand Opening of the Genealogical Research Library on Dick Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter blog.

However, the article did not announce an opening date.  The last I heard it was September 28, 2013 or thereabouts.  The genealogical collection will be on the 9th floor, and SDGS members will be available to help visitors with their research.

KPBS, the San Diego PBS station, has posted a video on YouTube, titled "The Central Library Moves Hidden Treasures Out Into the Public Eye," from a local news item, at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHUOtQeUH94.

This video is fascinating.  You get a great look at some of the treasures found on the shelves in the bowels (two floors below street level) of the old Central Library.  Many of them have not been touched for years.  There are over 2 million items in this building.  I hope that all of the archival materials will be available for San Diego area researchers in the new, modern, San Diego Central Library.
