Best of the Genea-Blogs - 13 to 19 March 2016

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Women's History Month 2016: Tip #14 Ask An Expert by Gena Philibert-Ortega on Gena's Genealogy blog.  Are you asking experts to help you on a thorny genealogy problem?

*  4 Challenges in Downloading Historical Newspaper Articles by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Kenneth provides examples and best practices.

*  Browse the Images Online by Christopher C. Child on the Vita Brevis blog.  Christopher demonstrates two ways to find digitized but unindexed images on FamilySearch.

*  5 Reasons Why Google Can’t Show You Your Ancestral Home by Michael J.  Leclerc on the Je Me Souviens blog.  Michael's interesting post provides helpful examples.

*  Californians Heading to New York for the 1850 Census by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael finds a set of transcriber errors in Ancestry's census records.

*  Closing Up Shop at 23andMe and the Trap by Roberta Estes on the DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy blog.  Too bad.

*  Repeat: An Image Citation How-to by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy demonstrates how she adds a caption and source citation to an image.

*  Digitized Land Patent Plans at Archives of Ontario by the writer of the Gone Researching blog.  Here is another site with useful genealogy records.

*  FamilySearch Sends Alerts for GenealogyBank Obituaries by Thomas Jay Kemp on the GenealogyBank Blog.   This is pretty cool - you probably have to have the names on your watch list.

*  Recognize These Television Celebrities? by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Some folks haven't changed at all over the last twenty years.

*  Getting at the Original by Dave McDonald on the Thinking Genealogically blog.  Dave provides a good example of why we should obtain original images if possible.

*  One Good (Genealogy) Deed Deserves Another by Kevin Walker on the Who We Were, Are and Will Be Our Family blog.  Kevin found a book on eBay with a surprise in it.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1590 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
