1698 Birth Record of Mary Smith in Charlestown, Mass. - Post 411 for Treasure Chest Thursday

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1698 birth record of Mary Smith in the Charlestown, Massachusetts town record book:

The birth record for Mary Smith is on the left-hand page:

The transcription of this record is:

"Smith    Mary Smith, daughter of John & Ruth Smith
                           born March 4^th                         1697/8"

The source citation for this record is:

"Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988," indexed database with digital images, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 23 July 2013), "Charlestown Archives, Births, Marriages, Deaths," page 112 (image 117 of 385), Mary Smith birth record.

This record is a transcription of an earlier Charlestown town record that was lost or destroyed.  As such, it is a Derivative Source, with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the birth and parents of Mary Smith.

Mary Smith (1698- after 1746) was the daughter of John and Ruth (Cutler) Smith of Charlestown, Massachusetts.  He married She married Ebenezer Phillips (1695-1746) in 1719, probably in Malden, Massachusetts.  They had six children born between 1719 and 1733, the first in Wakefield, and the last four in Stoneham.

Ebenezer and Mary (Smith) Phillips are my 6th great-grandparents, through their son John Phillips (1722-1800), who married Hannah Brown (1725- before 1774) in 1749 in Southborough, Massachusetts.
