CVGS Saturday Workshop Features FamilySearch Digital Microfilm

The November Saturday Workshop for the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) is this Saturday, 3 November at 1 p.m. at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library in Bonita CA (4375 Bonita Rd, 91902) in the Community Room.  Parking may be tight, but their are available spaces in the nearby country club parking lot.

Randy Seaver will present his "Using FamilySearch Digital Microfilm to Find Genealogical Records" presentation.  The program description is:

"FamilySearch has thousands of FREE record collections (almost 2,400 of them are on the   https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list site), and many of them are not indexed and cannot be searched using search fields.  Many more FREE record collections have been digitized and are accessible only through the Family Search Library Catalog (https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/search).

"These sets were digitized from FHL microfilms.  Think of them as "digital microfilm" - you have to browse the unindexed records.  There are finding aids to help the researcher find records for their ancestors - waypoints, volumes, volume indexes, etc.  This presentation will demonstrate how to find records for your ancestors in probate, land, vital, church, and other unindexed records."

After the presentation, we want to try to help attendees with their specific research problems for which FamilySearch digital microfilm may provide the solution.

Attendees are requested to decide on a problem statement for one of your ancestors or localities - something specific pertaining to one of your ancestors and/or a specific place.  An example might be "Who are the parents of John Doe born in about 1840 in Sarsaparilla, Alabama?"  Or "What is Jane Doe's death date in Wayne County, Michigan?"  Or "What records are available on FamilySearch for Hilperton, Wiltshire, England?"

The  hope is that we can go through several of these problems on the screen, and perhaps some of our more experienced researchers can help other attendees. We will pass a sheet around to collect the problem statements during the presentation.

Attendees should bring their laptops with their family tree on it - either in genealogy software (e.g., Family Tree Maker, RootsMagic, Reunion, etc.) or an online tree (Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch Family Tree, etc.).

We hope that this workshop will provide a stimulus for attendee's genealogy research.  I know that it has greatly helped my research in New England, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Iowa, California, Kansas, Canada, England, Denmark, and Italy.

Chula Vista Genealogical Society programs are free to attend.
