How Many AncestryDNA ThruLines Do I Have For Each Common Ancestor?

After our DNA Interest Group meeting today at the Chula Vista Library, I wondered how many AncestryDNA ThruLines I have for each common ancestor.

I used the DNA icon on my Ancestry Member Tree pedigree chart to help me (see Seeing AncestryDNA ThruLines From Your Ancestry Member Tree Pedigree Chart for details):

I clicked on every one of the couples on my chart back to the 4th great-grandparents, and tried to not count DNA matches twice (they show up in the most recent common ancestors, but also the parents of those ancestors).  I'm not counting myself in any of these numbers.  Here are the numbers (including those for unknown ancestors denoted by ???):

1)  Grandparents:

*  Frederick Seaver/Alma Richmond:  3

*  Lyle Carringer/Emily Auble:  0

2)  Great-Grandparents:

*  Frank Seaver/Hattie Hildreth:  0
*  Thomas Richmond/Julia White:  11

*  Henry Carringer/Della Smith:  0
*  Charles Auble/Georgianna Kemp:  0

3)  2nd Great-Grandparents:

*  Isaac Seaver/Lucretia Smith:  0
*  Edward Hildreth/Sophia Newton:  0
*  James Richman/Hannah Rich:  6
*  Henry White/Amy Oatley:  2

*  David Carringer/Rebecca Spangler:  0
*  Devier Smith/Abbie Vaux:  0
*  David Auble/Sarah Knapp:  1
*  James Kemp/Mary Sovereen:  3

4)  3rd Great-Grandparents:

*  Benjamin Seaver/Abigail Gates:  3
*  Alpheus Smith/Elizabeth Dill:  0
*  Zachariah Hildreth/Hannah Sawtell:  10
*  Thomas Newton/Sophia Buck:  1
*  John Richman/Ann Marshman:  3
*  John Rich/Rebecca Hill:  6
*  Jonathan White/Miranda Wade:  0
*  Jonathan Oatley/Amy Champlin:  12

*  Henry Carringer/Sarah Feather:  5
*  Daniel Spangler/Elizabeth King:  13
*  ??? Lanfear/???? : 0
*  Samuel Vaux/Mary Underhill:  1
*  John Auble/Anna Row:  4
*  William Knapp/Sarah Cutter:  3
*  Abraham Kemp/Sarah Fletcher:  10
*  Alexander Sovereen/Sarah Putman:  1

5)  4th Great-Grandparents:

*  Benjamin Seaver/Martha Whitney:  3
*  Nathan Gates/Abigail Knowlton:  7
*  Aaron Smith/Mercy Plimpton:  2
*  Thomas Dill/Hannah Horton:  1
*  Zachariah Hildreth/Elizabeth Keyes:  4
*  Josiah Sawtell/Hannah Smith:  0
*  ??? Newton/???? :  0
*  Isaac Buck/Mary Phillips:  3
*  ??? Richman/????: 0
*  ??? Rich/ ????: 0
*  ??? Marshman/???? :  0
*  John Hill/Ann Warren:  0
*  Humphrey White/Sybil Kirby:  2
*  Simon Wade/Phebe Horton:  2
*  Joseph Oatley/Mary Hazard:  1

*  Martin Carringer/Maria Hoax:  18
*  Cornelius Feather/???:  0
*  Rudolf Spangler/Dorothea Dinkel:  5
*  Philip King/Catherine Ruth:  3
*  Isaac Lanfear/Rosina Laun:  4
*  ??? ????/????:  0
*  John Vaux/Mary Palmer:  5
*  Amos Underhill/Mary Metcalf:  3
*  Johannes Able/Sophia Trimmer:  3
*  ??? Knapp/???? : 0
*  Philip Row/Maria Smith:  3
*  Stephen Cutter/Tabitha Randolph:  9
*  John Kemp/Mary Dafoe:  9
*  ??? Fletcher/ ???? : 0
*  Frederick Sovereen/Mary Hutchinson:  1
*  John Putman/Sarah Martin:  1

So the ancestors which are common ancestors to my AncestryDNA matches are:

*  Grandparents:  3 on father's side, 0 on mother's side

*  Great-grandparents:  11 on father's side, 0 on mother's side

*  2nd great-grandparents:  8 on father's side, 4 on mother's side

*  3rd great-grandparents:  35 on father's side, 37 on mother's side

*  4th great-grandparents:  25 on father's side, 66 on mother's side

The grand totals:  82 on father's side, 107 on mother's side

Through the 4th great-grandparents, there are 189 AncestryDNA matches with common ancestors.

Of course, ThruLines calculates these back to 5th great-grandparents, but that's another 64 couples (and I don't know all of them, of course!).   I need to do them, but will do them another time.

This was interesting, but I'm not sure what it tells me.  I know that my 20th century ancestors didn't have many children, but it seems my father's New England ancestry hasn't produced many DNA matches compared to my mother's Pennsylvania German ancestry.

Thanks for this. Interesting results, especially how the lines with more common ancestors changed as you moved back in time.

I have Pennsylvania Germans in both my mother and father’s lines and have found many matches in both of those.

I’ve also found many matches with common ancestors that have not yet come up in ThruLines. Maybe incorrect or missing lines in Ancestry’s Big Tree...
