Seavers in the News -- L.H. Seaver Dies in Ramona, California

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Ellsworth [Kans.] Reporter newspaper dated 23 December 1915:

The transcription of the article is:

DIED

Word was received here last night that L.H. Seaver passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Nell Doig, in Ramona, California, Wednesday evening, December 22, 1915, about eight o'clock.

Mr. Seaver was born in Montreal, Canada, January 4, 1848, and was 57 years,11 months, and 18 days old.  He moved to Michigan in 1865 and graduated from Lawrence University at Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1864.  In 1870, he was employed in the construction of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad, and also on the Union-Pacific in California and Nevada until 1873, when he entered the University of Michigan Law School, from which he graduated in 1876.  He then moved to Ellsworth and opened a law office and was engaged in the practice of law, and the abstract and insurance business from that time until shortly before his death.  He was married in 1881 to Mrs. Nellie Osborne and to this union two children were born -- W.R. and Charles Seaver.

Mr. Seaver served as county attorney for two terms, was mayor of Ellsworth from 1892 to 1893, and served as city treasurer for a number of years.  In 1897 he was elected to the legislature from this county and re-elected in 1899.  In 1903 he was again sent to represent this county at Topeka.  He was a consistent supporter of the best interests of the city, county, and state.  Coming to Kansas in the early days, he prospered from the first by his strict attention to business and honesty.  He always took a lively interest in politics and was well known in political circles over the state.  He was a member of the Congregational church and also a Mason.

Mr. Seaver is survived by his sister, Mrs. J.R. Doig, Ramona, Calif., and Mrs. Anna Fagan, Enid, Okla; brother, Chas. H. Seaver, Ramona, Calif.; two sons, W.R. of Ellsworth and Charles of Chicago, Ill., and one daughter, Mrs. C.E. Sutton of Lawrence, Kansas.

Mr. Seaver had not been well for some time.  He was very ill about two months ago with pneumonia, and went to California to recuperate.  Mrs. Seaver died in January of the present year and he never fully recovered from the shock, and this, coupled with a tendency to heart trouble, brought about the end.  No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.

Linus Homer Seaver (1848-1915) was the son of Rev. William Rufus Seaver (1822-1898) and Mehitable Homer (1822-1908).  He married twice-widowed Nellie Viola (Henry) (Whitney) Osborne (1855-1915) in 1881 in St. Joseph, Missouri.  They had two sons:

*  William Rufus Seaver (1881-1967), married Flora A. Copple (1889-1964) in 1915 in Ellsworth, Kansas; one child.

*  Charles Homer Seaver (1884-1951), married Grace Mary Marsh (1885-1955) in Chicago, Illinois; four children

Nellie (Henry) (Whitney) Osborne was widowed twice.  Her first husband was Chauncey Belden Whitney (1842-1873), and her second husband was Vincent B. Osborne (1839-1879).  Nellie had two other children:

*  Mary Elizabeth Whitney (1872-1956), married Charles Henry Sutton (1869-1954) in 1897 in Ellsworth, Kansas.

*  Katie H. Osborne (1877-1877).

The obituary says that Linus Homer Seaver (1848-1915) was 57 years old - he was actually 67 years old - an editor's error.  "Mrs. C.E. Sutton" was his step-daughter.

I had Linus Homer Seaver in my RootsMagic family tree database, along with his parents, siblings, and children.  I did not have Nellie's first two husbands or their children.

Linus Homer Seaver is my 2nd cousin 4 times removed.
