Treasure Chest Tuesday -- 1855 Wisconsin State Census for Ranslow Smith Household in Burnett, Wisconsin

This week's Tuesday Treasure is the 1855 Wisconsin State Census record for the Ranslow Smith family (enumerated and indexed as Ranslow Small) in Burnett, Dodge County, Wisconsin:

The Ranslow Small family is the 3rd from the bottom on the left-hand page:

The extracted information from this record for the Ranslow Small family is:

*  Head of family:  Ranslow Small
*  Aggregate population, White - male:  5
*  Aggregate population, White - female:  3

*  Foreign birth:  2

The source citation for this census record is:

"Wisconsin State Census, 1855," indexed database and digital image, FamilySearch.org   (https://www.familysearch.org : accessed 31 March 2013), Dodge County, Burnett, Ranslow Small household, image 45 of 143.

The numbers of male and female may account for:

*  father Ranslow Smith - born 1805 in New York
*  son Devier J. Smith - born 1839 in New York
*  3 unknown males (perhaps of foreign birth?)

*  mother Mary (Bell) Smith
*  daughter Mary Jane Bell Smith - born 1838 in New York
*  1 unknown female (perhaps of foreign birth?)

The only reason I know that this Ranslow Small household is headed by Ranslow Smith is that he was head of household in Dodge County in the 1850 and 1860 census enumerations, and his given name is fairly unique.  Plus, he is on the same image as Samuel Vaux.  Devier J. Smith married Abigail Vaux in 1861 in Dodge County, Wisconsin.

Right below the Ranslow Small family on the census listing is the Nathaniel Sanborn family.  The daughter of Ranslow and Mary (Bell) Smith, Mary Jane Bell Smith (1838-1911), married Lucius Sanborn (1834-1919), the son of Nathaniel Sanborn, in 1857 in Dodge County, Wisconsin, and they moved to Howard County, Iowa, and had 11 children.  Neighbors get married quite often!

Ranslow and Mary (Bell) Smith are my 3rd great-grandparents, who adopted Devier J. Lamphier Smith as a small child in Jefferson County, New York.  The Smith's moved from Henderson, Jefferson County, New York in the 1840s to Dodge County, Wisconsin.  Mary (Bell) Smith died in 1865 in Dodge County, Wisconsin,, and Ranslow Smith moved with Devier and his family in about 1868 to Taylor County, Iowa, and married (2) Julia Johnston.  Ranslow moved again to Andrew County, Missouri, where he died in 1873.
I am descended from their son, Devier J. Lamphier Smith (1839-1894), who married Abigail A. Vaux (1844-1931) in Dodge County, Wisconsin in 1861.
