4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):
Mark Putnam has done the best research on this family to date.  He wrote The Kinnan Family, which is available online at http://www.putmanfamily.org/Family/The%20Kinnan%20Family.pdf.[1]  I have relied on Mark's work on this family in this sketch.

The names Kinnan, Kennan, Canaan, and Cannan were used frequently in this time period and place for the Kinnan families.

John Kinnan was likely born about 1732 near Deep Brook, Middlesex County, New Jersey, the son of Thomas Kinnan and Eleanor --?--.[1]   The Thomas Kinnan family probably moved to Morris County, New Jersey before 1750.

John likely married, in about 1754, probably in Somerset, New Jersey, to Martha Morrison, the daughter of John Morrison of Somerset County, New Jersey, who left a will dated June 17, 1751.[1]

John and Martha (Morrison) Kinnan had at least four children:[1]

1. Probably John Kinnan. He was born about 1755 in Morris County, New Jersey. He likely married Catherine Victorse Putman a daughter of Margaret Wies and Victor Potman/Putman.
2. Sarah Mary Kinnan. Sarah was born about 1761 perhaps in Morris County, New Jersey. She married Peter Victorse Potman/Putman who was born about 1760 likely in Sussex County, New Jersey, the son of Margaret Wies and Victor Potman.
3. Eleanor Kinnan/Cannan. She was born about 1765 in New Jersey and married John Chamberlain. John  was born about 1759, the son of John Chamberlain.
4. Martha Kinnan/Cannan. Martha was born about 1773 in New Jersey and died in Lackawanna, Pennsylvania. She married Eleazer Atherton who was born about 1765 in New York.

A John Kinnan was mentioned in a number of will records in northern New Jersey, including:[1]

*  1754, August 2: Parker, Nathaniel, farmer, of Morris Co. Intestate inventory £88.2.10, by William Compton and Ezekiel Mulford. 1754, Sept. 25: Bond of Elizabeth widow as Adm. John Kinnan of [the] same Co. shopkeeper, fellowbondsman. Lib. F, p. 212.

*  1759, Aug. 22: McEowen, Robert, of Somerset Co., yeoman. Intestate. Bond of Mary McEown, widow, and Robert Helm as administrators of the estate. Brice Riky Fellowbondsman. Lib. G, p. 94.
1758, Aug. 28: Inventory [of] £154.2.6 [taken] by John Kinnan and Hugh Campbell.

*  1772, October 6: Boyle, Benjamin, of Morristown, Morris Co. Will and Real and personal estate to be sold. To Mary Magdolan Boyle, daughter of John and Hannah Boyle, £35. To Jean Dunremple, wife of Joseph Dunremple, the use of £50, to be put in the hands of Thomas Burgle, and, at her death to be paid to her son Solomon Dunremple, and, in case of his death to his brothers and sisters. To Susannah Munro, daughter of Daniel and Mary Munro, £35. To William Boyle, son of Solomon and Margret Boyle, £50. Executors — John Chetwood, of Elizabeth Town, Daniel Vail and Thomas Burgle of Bernardstown. Witnesses—John Kinnan, William Davison, William Alger. Proved Dec. 7, 1772. Lib. K, p. 504.

*  1776, July 17: Riky, Brice of Mendon Township, Morris Co. Will. Son, Benjamin Rikey, a mare.  Son Cornelius Riky, a colt, and he is to be put to learn a trade. Wife Marcy the rest of my estate. Son John my apparel. Executor— son-in-law, John Durham. Witnesses—Jonathan Riggs, John
Kinnan. Proved Sept. 8, 1777.

The John Kinnan family likely removed from Morris County, New Jersey in about 1778, during the American Revolutionary War,  to Wantage, Sussex County, New Jersey.  John Kinnan was not on the 1774 Tax List for Sussex Co., New Jersey. On 20 March 1780, Sarah Kinnan, John and Martha Kinnan’s his first known daughter, married Peter Potman or Putman in Wantage.[1]

John Kinnan left an intestate estate record in 1784 in Wantage, Sussex County.[1]   Widow Martha "Cannan" was named administrator of the estate.  The inventory of John Kinnan's estate was ordered on 4 September 1784, taken on 6 November 1784, and submitted to the court on 17 January 1785 by Cornelius Atherton (the father-in-law of Martha Kinnan, John’s daughter).[1]  Images of the available records are on Mark Putnam's website, but are not online at FamilySearch or Ancestry and (the abstract is not available on Ancestry.com).

John Kinnan died before 4 September 1784, probably in Wantage, Sussex County, New Jersey.  His burial location is not known.
