The Carringer House in San Diego in 1900 -- Post 643 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I can't help it, I can't do a wordless post! This is one of my favorite photographs:

This photograph is from about 1900 taken in San Diego, California - the house address was 510 Watkins Street at the time (would be 3010 Hawthorn Street now).  My great-grandparents, Henry Austin and Della (Smith) Carringer built this house after buying the land in 1895.  The people in this photo are, from left to right:

*  The horse, whose name I don't know.
*  Della (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944), my great-grandmother, wife of Henry, daughter of Abbie
*  Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976), my maternal grandfather, son of Della and Henry
*  Harvey Edgar Carringer (1852-1946), brother of Henry
*  Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946), my great-grandfather, father of Lyle, son of D.J. and Rebecca
*  Rebecca (Spangler) Carringer (1832-1901), my 2nd-great-grandmother, mother of Henry
*  David Jackson "D.J." Carringer (1828-1902), my second great-grandfather, father of Henry, husband of Rebecca
*  Abbey (Vaux) Smith (1844-1931), my second great-grandmother, mother of Della.

So this is a 3 generation photograph (besides the horse, of course) - Lyle Carringer > Henry/Della Carringer  > DJ/Rebecca Carringer and Abbey Smith.

In 1900, this house stood on the northeast corner of what is now 30th Street and Hawthorn Street.  In 1927, Henry and Della (Smith) Carringer moved the house to the middle of the block facing 30th Street, and added rooms on the first floor, closed off the internal staircase to the second floor,  and the second floor, added front and back staircases to the second floor, and covered it all in stucco.  I lived in the upstairs apartment with my parents and brothers from 1947 to 1968.
