Seavers in the News -- Brig. Thomas C. Seaver Dies in 1950

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Asbury Park [M.J.] Press newspaper dated 21 July 1950:

The transcription of the article is:

"Retired Officer Of Salvation Army

"Brig. Thomas C. Seaver, 77, retired Salvation Army officer, died last night at his home, 50 Park Avenue, Ocean Grove, where he had resided since his retirement in 1938.

"He entered the Salvation Army training home in 1894 and served several appointments with the Home corps.  He was a member of the social service department in Washington, and later in Lowell, Mass. and Hartford, Conn.  In 1920 he was made district officer with headquarters in Boston.

"In 1923 he was named distrcit officer of the Northeastern division with the rank of major and later served as district officer of the Dixie division.  After being transferred to the eastern territory as general secretary of the south-east Pennsylvania-Delaware division, he was appointed brigadier and assigned to Territorial headquarters as head of the welfare department.  Upon his retirement he was serving with the social service center in Jersey City.

"He was in charge of the Asbury Park corps 54 years ago.  Brigadier and Mrs. Seaver celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Salvation Army citadel in 1947.

"He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Seaver; two sons, Maj. Thomas Seaver, Pittsburgh and Maj. J. Douglas Seaver, Syracuse, N.Y.; two daughters, Mrs. Edward Carey, Cleveland, and Mrs. Walter Squibb, New York city, and seven grandchildren.

"Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph R. Ely funeral home."

The source citation is:

This obituary provides a name, a death date and place, and the names of his spouse and children, plus his life history with the Salvation Army.  However, there is nothing about birthplace, parents or siblings.

Rhomas Charles Patrick Seaver was born 18 May 1873 in Brighton, Sussex, England, the son of Jonathan Pockrich and Marie Nicholena (Leeson) Seaver, and died 20 July 1950 in Neptune, New Jersey.  He married Florence A. Daighton (1872-1964) on 14 December 1897 in Meriden, Connecticut.  They had five children:

*  Charles Lincoln Seaver (1898-1908).

*  Thomas W. Seaver (1902-1993), married 1934 Frances J. Pike (1911-2003).

*  Douglas Jonathan Seaver (1904-1978), married 1941 Miriam Helen Goodman (1915-2011).

*  Faith Seaver (1905-2000), married 1930 Edward Carey (1906-2001).

*  Florence A. Seaver (1909-2011), married 1934 Walter H. Squibb (1904-1985)

I am not related to Thomas C. Seaver since he is descended from a long line of Seavers in County Armagh, Ireland dating back to Nicholas and Susanna (--?--) Seaver in the early 1600s.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a passion and dedicates his life to religion and service. I am glad that I can honor Thomas C. Seaver today.  

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
