Carringers in the News -- Lyle and Emily Carringer Celebrate Their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1968

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the San Diego [Calif.] Union newspaper dated 27 June 1968:
The transcription of the article is:

"Hobbies Enrich Years  Together

"Mr. and Mrs. Lyle L. Carringer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday at an open house in their home on Point Loma.  Mr. Carringer was with the former Marston Company for 47 years previous to his retirement in 1961.  During World War I, he served in the Marine corps.  His hobby, philately, keeps him in correspondence with interesting people throughout the world.

"Mrs. Carringer's hobby is flower arranging.  She is a nationally accredited flower show judge.  Mr. and Mrs. Carringer are avid gardeners.

"They have one daughter, Mrs. F.W. Seaver, and three grandsons.  Out-of-town guests at the party included Mrs. William T. Laws of Kern City and Mrs. W.R. Goddard of Glendale."

"Hobbies Enrich Years Together," San Diego [Calif.] Union newspaper, Thursday, 27 June 1968, page B-8, column 1, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Carringer article;   GenealogyBank, Newspaper Archives  (https://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 14 February 2022).

Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976) and Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer were married on 19 June 1918 in San Diego, California.  Their only child was Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002), who married Frederick Walton Seaver Jr. (1911-1983) on 14 June 1942.  They had three sons.

Lyle and Emily are my beloved maternal grandparents - the only grandparents I saw throughout my life until they passed away.  This article honors them with some highlights of their life.  Lyle corresponded with people all over the world from before World War II until his death about postage stamps, and had a beautiful collection.  After they moved to Point Loma, they hosted several couples from Australia and New Zealand, from the correspondence, at their home on visits to the United States.

I am quite sure that I attended this anniversary party at their home at 825 Harbor View Place in Point Loma.  I knew Winfred and Edwina Goddard also, two of the guests from out-of-town.  Edwina's mother, Gladys (Nolan) Taylor, was one of Emily's best friends in high school in San Diego.  Win and Edwina were active in the San Diego Genealogical Society in the 1970 to 1995 period.

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a newspaper article provides more detail about your very close family.  I am glad that I can honor my grandparents, Lyle Lawrence and Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer, today.

You never know when a descendant, relative or friend will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
