Vauxes in the News -- Letitia (Jones) Vaux Dies in 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

  It's time for another edition of "Vauxes in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Vaux (my 2nd great-grandmother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Pittsburgh [Penn.] Daily Post newspaper dated 21 May 1916:

The transcription of the article is:

"Mrs. Letitia J. Vaux

"Mrs. Letitia Jones Vaux, widow of James E. Vaux and a resident of the Southside for years, died yesterday in the home of her son, Dr. David W. Vaux, 4300 Butler street.  She was a member of the Knoxville Methodist Protestant Church and Martha Chapter O.E.S.  She leaves two sons, Dr. George H. Vaux and Dr. David W. Vaux; two daughters, Mrs. George S. Wucherer of East Liverpool and Mrs. Kirk Plummer of New York; two brothers, Rev. David Jones of Waynesburg and Postmaster Theopolis Jones of Allenport, and five grandchildren."

The source citation is:

"Mrs. Letitia J. Vaux" Pittsburgh [Penn.] Daily Post newspaper, Sunday, 21 May 1916, page 6, column 5, Mrs. Letitia Jones Vaux  obituary;   Newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 28 March 2022).

Letitia Jones was born 16 September 1836 in Wales.  She married James Edward Vaux (1836-1895) in 1856, probably in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  She died 20 May 1916 in Pittsburgh.  They had nine children:

*  Sophia Vaux (1858-1921).
*  James E. Vaux (1858-1873).
*  Harriet Vaux (1861-1862).
*  Mabel Vaux (1864-1873).
*  George Henry Vaux (1867-1927), married 1898 Mary Elizabeth Early (1874-1918).
*  Anna E. Vaux (1869-1888).
*  David William Vaux (1871-1935), married 1909 Elizabeth H. Fraser (1868-1963).
*  Ella Vaux (1875-????), married 1897 James A. Langton (1860-????).
*  Albert Vaux (1878-1878).

I am a first cousin four times removed to Letitia's husband, James Edward Vaux (1836-1895), with common ancestors of James Vaux (1787-1839) and Mary Palmer (1790-1845), who migrated from South Petherton, Somerset, England to Erie County, New York in the early 1830s.

There are hundreds of Vaux "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a family has six children who did not survive childhood.  .  I am glad that I can honor Letitia (Jones) Vaux today.

You never know when a descendant, relative or friend will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
