Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 268: 1850 U.S. Census Entry for Amos Underhill (1772-1865) Household

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the  1850 United States Census for the Amos Underhill household in Aurora, Erie county, New York:

The Amos Underhill household:

The extracted information for the Amos Underhill household:

*  Amos Underhill - age 75, male, a farmer, $1300 in real property, born Mass.
*  Mary Underhill - age 69, female, born N.H.
*  Delos Underhill - age 17, male, a farmer, born N.Y., attends school
*  Don Carlos Underhill - age 14, male, born N.Y., attends school

The source citation for this record is:

1850 United States Federal Census, Erie County, New York, population schedule, Aurora Township: Page 102B (stamped), Dwelling #1581, Family #1587, Amos Underhill household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 19 November 2012), citing National Archives Microfilm Publication M432, Roll 498.

Amos and Mary (Metcalf) Underhill had five children, but none of them resided with them in the 1850 U.S. Census.  A close examination of the census page above reveals that son James P. Underhill is listed two families above Amos Underhill,  Delos and Don Carlos Underhill in this record are grandsons of Amos and Mary (Metcalf) Underhill - sons of Cyrus Metcalf Underhill (1804-1841) and his wife Malinda (Harmond) Underhill (1812-1883).

Amos is listed as being born in Massachusetts.  There is a birth record for him in Chester, New Hampshire, not Massachusetts, in 1772, so his age of 75 is not correct.
