Seavers in the News -- Mabel Bright Seaver Dies in 1963 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania

 Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Pittsburgh [Penn.] Post-Gazette newspaper dated 1 October 1963:

The transcription of the article is:

"Seaver

On Saturday, Sept. 28, 1963, Mabel Bright Seaver, of 781 15th St., Oakmont, wife of Kenneth Seaver; mother of James Verner of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Kenneth Hewitt of Oakmont; also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Friends received at the Chapel of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m., when memorial services will be held.  In lieu of flowers family requests contributions be made to the Presbyterian Home for the Aged, Oakmont, Pa."

The source citation is:

This is a decent death notice, but far from an obituary.  At least it provides enough information to identify her spouse and living children.  Who is James Verner?

Mabel B. Bright (1878-1963) was born 25 December 1878 in Sewickly, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Graham and Dutie (Mendenhall) Bright.  She married Kenneth Seaver (1877-1969), son of Thomas Orville and Nancy Johnson (Spaulding) Seaver of Woodstock, Vermont.  They had four children:

*  Ethel S. Seaver (1903-2001), married 1927 James Verner (1902-1977)

*  Virginia S. Seaver (1907-1958), married 1933 Richard Clinton Ritter (1906-1957).

*  Mary S. Seaver (1912-1977), married 1937 Kenneth Chadbourne Hewitt (1912-1992).

*  Thomas Seaver (1915-1943), married 1940 Eleanor Louise Landstrom (1915-1984).

Apparently, the death notice should have said "Mrs. James Verner".

Kenneth Seaver (1877-1969) is a 6th cousin 3 times removed to me.  Our common Seaver ancestor is Robert Seaver (1608-1683).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a death notice with very little information. I am glad that I can honor Mabel Bright Seaver today.  

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
