Vauxes In the News -- Mrs. Mary A. Vaux Dies in Concordia, Kansas in 1882

  It's time for another edition of "Vauxes in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Vaux (my 2nd great-grandmother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Concordia [Kan.] Empire newspaper dated 9 November 1882:

The transcription of the article is:

"Mrs. Mary A. Vaux, who was Mrs. D.J. Smith's mother, died last Friday night and was buried last Sunday.  The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Tuttle at the M.E. church at 11 o'clock Sabbath morning, and a large congregation was present.  Mrs. Vaux has lived a long and useful life and had a great many friends.  She was seventy-seven years old.  She has raised a large family of children all of whom are nice people and valuable acquisitions to society.  Her son, Mr. Jas. Vaux, of Omio, Jewell county, and her daughter, Mrs. F. Mougar, of Belleville, Republic county, were present at the funeral.  She has been very feeble for years and has outlived even the expectations of her friends.  We extend to the friends our earnest sympathy in this great affliction."

The source citation is:

"Local News," Concordia [Kan.] Empire newspaper, Thursday, 9 November 1882, page 3, column 4, Mrs. Mary A. Vaux  obituary;   Newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 7 March 2022).

Mrs. Mary A. Vaux was born Mary Ann Underhill on 5 March 1815 in Aurora, Erie County, New York, the daughter of Amos and Mary (Metcalf) Underhill.  She married Samuel Vaux (1816-1880) before 1839, probably in Aurora, New York.  She died 3 November 1882 at age 67 in Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas.  They had seven children:

*  Mary Almeda Vaux (1839-before 1880), married 1861 James G. Woodward (1837-1880).
*  Celia Ann Vaux (1842-1919), married (1) 1867 Milo Redfield (1836-1867); (2) 1872 Francis Napoleon Munger (1845-1929).
*  Abigail A. Vaux (1844-1931), married 1861 Devier J. Smith (1839-1894).
*  James P. Vaux (1847-1902), married 1879 Mary Alice Patrick (1856-1904).
*  Elizabeth B. Vaux (1849-1931), married 1871 Samuel Crouch (1840-1931).
*  Amos S. Vaux (1854-1876).

There are hundreds of Vaux "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a newspaper article provides more detail about your ancestors.  I am glad that I can honor my 3rd great-grandmother, Mary Ann (Underhill) Vaux, today.

You never know when a descendant, relative or friend will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
