Review: "Genealogy at a Glance: Ontario, Canada Genealogy Research," by Lorine McGinnis Schulze

The Genealogical Publishing Company in Baltimore has published another in its series of "Genealogy at a Glance" laminated research guides - this time for  Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research, by Lorine McGinnis Schulze.

This "Genealogy at a Glance" booklet has four laminated pages on one 11" x 17" paper (folded). It is designed to give the user the basic elements of genealogy research in the allotted space. They provide an overview of the facts a researcher needs to know in order to begin and proceed successfully with research in the subject.

The description of the
Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research  booklet includes:

Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, was a wilderness until 1782, when thousands of Loyalists from the United States—fleeing the colonies after the American Revolution—settled along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. They were soon joined by Swiss Mennonites from Pennsylvania, and in the 19th century by emigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, France, and other European countries.

Following the format of the other publications in our “At a Glance” series, this guide—in only four, laminated pages—gives you all the information you will need to begin tracing these Ontario, Canada, ancestors. Topics covered include immigration and settlement history; ships’ passenger lists; naturalization records; Loyalists; and census, vital, church, and land records. Throughout the guide are informative tips and numerous online and print resources that will help further your research.

In short, Genealogy at a Glance: Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research highlights all the basic elements of Ontario family history research in an easy-to-use format, allowing you to grasp the fundamentals of Ontario genealogy “at a glance.”

The booklet has these sections:
  • Contents
  • Key Dates & Name Changes
  • Immigration and Settlement
  • Ships Passenger Lists
  • Naturalization Records
  • Loyalists
  • Census Records
  • Vital Records
  • Church Records
  • Land Records
  • Other Online Resources
This booklet is designed primarily for the researcher who has little experience and understanding of Ontario Genealogy Research and provides an overview of the basics of finding Ontario genealogy resources.

For someone like me that teaches and talks about genealogy a bit, it is invaluable because I can pull it out and provide some guidance to my student or colleague interested in the subject.

The beauty of these "Genealogy at a Glance" booklets is that they are very light and portable in a briefcase or laptop case. They are fixtures in my research case.

This four-page laminated booklet costs $9.95,  plus postage and handling. You can order it through the Genealogical Store, or use the link for the
Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research booklet and click on the "Add to Cart" link.  I recommend buying these booklets at seminars and conferences where they are offered in order to avoid the shipping costs.
