Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 25 June 2023

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week.

1)  Hosted and moderated the Chula Vista Genealogical Society DNA Interest Group Meeting on Wednesday.  We discussed the MyHeritage update to Theory of Family Relativity, the homework from the May meeting (to identify the top unresolved matches that you don't know the common ancestors), and the homework for the July meeting (what have you done to identify the common ancestor for one of those unresolved matches?).

2)  Worked to gather all of the CVGS Research Group handouts and DNA Interest Group handouts from 2020 on in one place on the CVGS OneDrive site.

3)  Continued tagging, enhancing/colorizing, and captioning scanned photos on MyHeritage Photos, then renaming and saving them to my desktop computer photo files.

4)  Started scanning my Aunt Gerry's 40 page typed (yes, on a typewriter only) autobiography using the free TextScan mobile app.  It permits only five free scans a day.  I'm though 15 pages now.  The transcription is imperfect because the text is light and single spaced.  I send the text transcriptions to my email, then copy/paste into a document, and then proof the transcription with the original typed document.

5)  Wrote a genealogical sketch for #107 4th great-grandmother Rosina (Lown) Lanfear (1781-1881) of Lorraine, New York for the 52 Ancestors series on Friday.  I've written 485 of these sketches for my ancestors.

6)  Transcribed the one page 1902 Will of Charles W. Seaver (1844-1913) of Manchester, New Hampshire for the Amanuensis Monday series.

7)  AncestryDNA now has 43,495 DNA matches (up 63 from 18 June) for me today, with no new ThruLines.   I added 2 Notes to my new matches.  MyHeritageDNA now has 11,470 DNA matches (up 18 from 18 June) for me, with no new Theories.  Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

8)  Occasionally matched RootsMagic 9 profiles to FamilySearch Family Tree.  I have matched 49,570 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 31).

9) Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles. I now have 71,124 persons in my RootsMagic file (up 36), and 146,060  source citations (up 21). I TreeShared 67 new or modified profiles with my Ancestry Member Tree, and I resolved 332 Ancestry Hints. My Ancestry Member Tree has Ancestry Record Hints with 177,664 to be resolved, but I work on them several times a week.

10) Wrote 16 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Monday through Sunday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week was
Beware of the A.I. Chatbots for Genealogy   with over 206 views.  Genea-Musings had about 61,600 page views last week.

11)  Real life:  This is week 171 (over three years!) since COVID restrictions started.   I stayed home except for visiting Linda every day at the skilled nursing/memory care facility. Went grocery shopping on Monday and Friday.   Trimmed more of the rose bushes in front of the house but I can't reach some branches, and trimmed more of the bushes in the side yard.  I'm still sorting out stuff from the closet and the genealogy cave - save, toss or donate.  Walked every day on the block and talked to several neighbors.  I finished reading the John Grisham book Sparring Partners, and started the James Patterson book The Cornwalls Are Gone.  The Padres season continued, and I watched all of the games this past week.  They are 37-41 so far (2-5 this past week) and mired in fourth place in the NL West division.
