Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1692 Marriage of Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker in Marlborough, Massachusetts

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the Marriage entry for Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker in Marlborough in 1692 in the Torrey's Marriages book:
The marriage entry is  the third  one from the bottom of the page:

The transcription of this record is:

"RICE, Edmund (1663-1726) & Ruth PARKER, Roxbury; 15 Nov 1692; Marlborough {Court Rec. 1:218; Rice (#1) 8,35; Wells (#5) 138; Cross Anc. 93; Warner-Harrington 544]

The source citation for this record is:

"New England Marriages to 1700," online database with digital images, AmericanAncestors.org (New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2008), page 1265, Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker marriage entry, 15 November 1692.

This is an entry in a digitized published book for marriages in Massachusetts, which was collected by Clarence Almon Torrey from town record books and other records.  It is a Derivative Source with Secondary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker.

Edmund Rice (1663-1726) was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (King) Rice of Marlborough, Massachusetts.  He married Ruth Parker (1672-1726), the daughter John and Sarah (--?--) Parker of Roxbury, on 15 November 1692 in Marlborough.

Edmund and Ruth (Parker Rice are my 7th great-grandparents, through their daughter Dinah Rice (1693-1725) who married Nathan Brigham (1693-1784)  in 1717.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH—FamilySearch today announced that RootsTech Connect 2022 will take place on March 3–5, 2022, as a fully virtual family history event. A New Genie in My Cave -- Post 675 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I can't help it, I can't do a wordless post! This is one of my favorite photographs:

My 11-year-old Dell Inspiron "Methuselah" is gradually becoming unusable, so rather than wait for a complete failure I invested in a July 4th special at Costco on Tuesday.  I spent some of the day setting it up and software, but will wait until it is hooked to the cable modem to transfer about 140,000 files (mostly photos and genealogy) from iDrive.  I hope to do that on Wednesday and Thursday.  I will set up the old computer on a table to try to capture more files via wifi to a flash drive or Dropbox.

I am not very impressed with the "how to set it up" documentation provided by Dell.  I finally found the keyboard on switch after calling Dell tech support.

What should I call this computer?   Maybe Genie, eh?  Suggestions?

Carringers in the News -- Frederick Willard Carringer Dies in 1965 in Fort Worth, Texas

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from Fort Worth [Texas]Star-Telegram newspaper dated 28 November 1965:

The transcription of this article is:

"CARRINGER
Frederick Willard Carringer, 2524 Stadium Drive, passed away Saturday.  Survivors: Daughters, Edward C. House, Fort Worth, Mrs. Carl Rolle, Bethesda, Maryland; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.  Friends may call at Harveson & Cole, 702 8th Avenue until 1 p.m., Monday.  Services 2 p.m., Monday, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Rev. Louis F. Martin officiating.  Interment Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colo.  Family will appreciate memorials to Frederick W. Carringer Memorial Fund, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.  Arrangements Harveson & Cole."

The source citation is:

"Carringer," Fort Worth [Texas]Star-Telegram newspaper, death notice, Sunday, 28 November 1965, page 50, column 3, Frederick Willard Carringer obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 5 July 2021).

This death notice provides a death date and place, daughters names, but nothing about his occupation, religion or associations.

Frederick Willard Carringer was born 1 April 1876 in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois, the son of Anthony Spangler and Maria (Moyer) Carringer.  He died 27 November 1965 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.  He married Elizabeth A. (Daisy) Olds (1876-1950) on 9 June 1898 in Denver, Colorado.  They had two children:

*  Elizabeth Olds Carringer (1900-1992), married 1923 Edward Chandler House (1899-1976).
*  Catherine Olds Carringer (1908-2008), married 1937 Carl C. Rolle (1910-1976).

I am a second cousin two times removed to Frederick Willard Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851).

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a death notice with some family information but no other information.  I am glad that I can honor Frederick Willard Carringer today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

Monday Genea-Pourri - Week Ending 5 July 2021

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past two weeks:

1)  Tried to host the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) General Meeting in a Zoom Meeting last Wednesday, but the speaker had a time-critical appointment and had to cancel.  We will try to reschedule.

2)  Wrote and posted a biographical sketch of my 7th great-grandmother #609 Elizabeth (Maynard) Brigham (1673-1733) of Marlborough, Massachusetts  for my 52 Ancestors post on Friday, 25 June.

4)  AncestryDNA added 150 new DNA matches this past two weeks, with 3 new ThruLines (2 probably wrong), and  MyHeritage added 48 new DNA matches.   Reviewed the new DNA matches on  AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.  Added Notes to 8 more AncestryDNA matches with cM values, relationships and known shared ancestors, and added 1 ThruLines to RootsMagic.

5)  There were several sessions working in the RootsMagic software program to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 43,145 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 232).

6)  Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles.  I now have 64,261 persons in my RootsMagic file (up 257), and 139.480 source citations (up 224).   I TreeShared with my Ancestry Member Tree four times the past two weeks updating 411 profiles, and I resolved 952 Ancestry Hints.  I've fallen behind on the Ancestry Record Hints with 153,909 to be resolved, but I work on them almost daily.

7)  Wrote 25 Genea-Musings blog posts the past two weeks, of which two were a press release.  The most viewed post the past two weeks was The Best Laid Plans - Life Happens with over 653 views.

8)  As noted in the item 7 link, our life changed significantly on Sunday, 28 June.  We were in Huntington Beach, California visiting our daughter Tami's family, and saw two plays on Saturday and Sunday with our grandchildren acting in Moana. During intermission of Sunday, Linda fell and broke her left hip.  She was transported to the local hospital, and had a hip repair operation on Monday.   She was transferred by ambulance to Chula Vista on Wednesday night and is in a skilled nursing facility at Sharp Hospital only a mile from our home for physical therapy and nursing care.  I can visit for 30-60 minutes each day, but she is unable to put weight on her left leg at this time.

9)  This interrupted the normal and regular genealogy work here in the Genealogy Cave.  In addition, my mouse started acting funny and made it difficult to highlight, copy and paste anything on the desktop computer.  Today, the computer broke down and I have been trying to move the latest files to my external hard drive and USB drive and to iDrive.  At worst, I will lose only one days' files.  I went shopping today at the HP site, the Asus site, Costco and Best Buy looking for a new desktop computer.

10)  Other than the above, I am still fine here at the Genea-cave, hunkered down and not going out much after Week 68 of COVID-19 isolation.  The Padres season continues, and they are now 50-36 (8-4 the past two weeks).  I went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Other than that, it was stay-at-home on the computer doing (mainly) genealogy, plus eating, sleeping, laundry, cleaning, cooking, and a little yard work.

NOTE: Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the excellent TransylvanianDutch blog) started a Monday blog theme years ago called "Amanuensis Monday." John offers this definition for "amanuensis:"

"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."

Best of the Genea-Blogs - Week of 27 June to 3 July 2021

Scores of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

THE Genealogy Show 2021: A review by Linda Stufflebean on Empty Branches on the Family Tree.

A Nice New Feature at DNA Painter by Kitty Cooper on Kitty Cooper's Blog.

The Revised FamilySearch Help Center by James Tanner on Genealogy's Star.

Solve Genealogy Mysteries Step-by-Step by DiAnn Iamarino on Fortify Your Family Tree.

*  Friday Fossicking 2nd July 2021 by Crissouili on That Moment In Time.

This Week's Creme de la Creme - July 3, 2021  by Gail Dever on Genealogy a la Carte,

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and  read their articles, and add the blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I currently am reading posts from over 900 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Independence Day - My 22 Known Revolutionary War Soldier Ancestors

I have listed, and linked to my blog posts (in blue), my known Revolutionary War soldiers:

Burgess Metcalf (1741-1816) of Piermont New Hampshire

Isaac Buck (1757-1846) of Sterling Massachusetts (RevWar Pension File)

* Thomas Dill (1755-1839) of Eastham Massachusetts (RevWar Pension File)

Joseph Champlin (1758-1850) of South Kingstown Rhode Island (RevWar Pension File)

* Norman Seaver (1734-1787) of Westminster Massachusetts.

Benjamin Seaver (1757-1816) of Westminster Massachusetts.

* Zachariah Hildreth (1728-1784) of Westford Massachusetts.

Zachariah Hildreth (1754-1828) of Townsend Massachusetts.

*  Jeremiah Knowlton (1745-1785) of Lincoln, Massachusetts.

*  Ephraim Sawtell (1734-1800) of Mason, New Hampshire and Townsend, Massachusetts.

Amos Plimpton (1735-1808) of Medfield Massachusetts.

*  Moses Smith (1732-1806) of Walpole, Massachusetts.

David Kirby (1740-1832) of Westport Massachusetts.

Joseph Oatley (1756-1815) of South Kingstown Rhode Island. (Rev. War Pension File)

I probably have several more now that I have added the Brigham and Lanfear ancestries to my ancestors list, but have not researched them in depth to date.

Amazingly, each of them survived their wartime experiences.

I thank God for these men, the families that nurtured them, the wives that supported them, and the children who learned from them the importance of service to their country.

Thank you, gentlemen soldiers, and your families, for your service and your bravery.  I am proud of you, and wish that I had known you.  You've provided me with a wonderful ancestry, and I greatly appreciate it, every day.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Genealogy Pot Luck!

I'm not in the mood for a long Saturday Night Genealogy Fun (SNGF) blog post, but I know that my readers count on me and love to have genealogy fun, so tonight (and tomorrow) let's do:

GENEALOGY POT LUCK!!

Whatever genealogy fun you want to do - please spend an hour and do it!  Then tell us about it in your own blog post, and leave a comment here which I will add to the Comments after moderation.

Here's mine:

1)  It's been a terrible week for Linda and me as many of you know - she fell on Sunday, broke her left hip bone, was transported by ambulance to Orange Coast Medical Center (Fountain Valley, CA), had her hip surgically repaired on Monday, left the hospital via ambulance on Wednesday night to a skilled nursing facility in Chula Vista (one mile from home), and is being treated there.  She has not been able to have meaningful physical therapy yet.  It's a hospital gown, hospital food, bedpans and diapers.  I can visit once a day by appointment for 30 minutes.  My daughters and I have started gathering resources for the next stop in Linda's life journey, and need education and resources.  So that's the first No Genealogy Fun League (NGFL) experience

2)  Since I got home Wednesday night, I've been able to work a bit on writing blog posts, moderating comments, checking my DNA matches, and answering email, sending text messages, and writing updates on Facebook. I even updated the last 60 TreeShare persons to my Ancestry Member Tree using RootsMagic.  That was really the only GFL experience of the week.  It's been nice to get back to some of my routine daily activities of learning, writing, sharing and researching.

3)  However, my computer (I fear it's the monitor) makes it extremely difficult to copy and paste text from one place to another.  The mouse skips words or whole lines when I try to copy - perhaps 1 in 5 tries is successful.  I do a lot of that highlighting to do bolding and different font sizes too.  Another NGFL experience.  Maybe a new computer is in order?  I use the laptop now to do some of this, like the FamilySearch Saturday posts.

4)  My GPL (Genealogy Pot Luck)?  I'm looking forward to spending some of this weekend resolving hundreds of Ancestry Record Hints, matching profiles with FamilySearch Family Tree, and adding information to RootsMagic based on what I find online.  I may even transcribe a deed for Amanuensis Monday.

5)  Life goes on here in the RJS Genealogy Cave.  It's pretty quiet without the radio or TV on, and I'm sleeping really well since I got home.  I'm trying foods that I could not prepare for us when Linda was home because of her allergies to soybeans, soybean oil, MSG, shellfish, farm-fed fish, parmesan and romano cheese, chocolate, beer, and a number of other foods.  I had a Hungry Man last night and will try a Marie Callenders Pot Roast tonight.  Pizza and lasagna coming soon, I hope!

===========================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.
