Carringers in the News -- Thomas A. Carringer Dies in 1911 in Greenville, Pennsylvania

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Record-Argus [Greenville, Penn.] newspaper dated 1 March 1911:

The transcription of the article is:

"Thomas A. Carringer.

"Thomas A. Carringer died at his home here, Wednesday, March 1, at 12:05 a.m., after a long illness.  Mr. Carringer was 59 years and six months old, and is survived by his wife, daughter Mrs. Ira Porter and son Roy, at home.  Three sisters and one brother are living: Mrs. J.O. Sisley, Greenville; Mrs. Sarah Sisley, Chicago; Nan Organ, Chicago; Wm. Carringer of Greenville.

"Mr. Carringer was one of the best known residents of this city.  He was a son of George and Margaret (Crawford) Carringer and was born in Mercer county.  He was a carpenter by trade but for any years has been unable to do any active work on account of poor health.  The last sickness confined him to his home since September last.  He was a man of kindly disposition, beloved by all who knew him.

"The funeral will be held at the residence on Friday at 2 p.m.; services private.  Rev. N.A. White of the Methodist church will conduct the services, assisted by Rev. W.T. Alan.  Interment in Shenango Valley cem."

Thomas Adams Carringer (1851-1911) was born 11 August 1851 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the eldest son of George A. and Margaret R. (Crawford) Carringer.  He married Julia A. Riley (1861-1918) in about 1879, and they had three children:

*  Nellie May Carringer (1882-1933), married 1908 Ira T. Porter (1873-1946).

*  Thomas L. Carringer (1887-????).

*  Roy Thomas Carringer (1897-1966), married 1921 Anna C. Blank (1896-1960).

I am a second cousin three times removed to  Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851). 

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person suffers sickness and poor health and dies relatively young.  I am glad that I can honor Thomas Adams  Carringer today.
