Best of the Genea-Blogs - 24 to 30 November 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Thankful Thursday - Thanksgiving Thanks to Fellow Bloggers by Colleen G. Brown Pasquale on the Leaves & Branches blog.  Colleen shares some of the Favorite blogs that she is thankful for.  Great idea!

*  Now What?  23andMe and the FDA by Roberta J. Estes on the DNAeXplained-Genetic Genealogy blog.  Roberta has commentary about the problem, and suggestions on what to do with your results.

*  Ancestry Member Trees: It's All About Comments, Isn't It, Cousin Russ by Pat Richley-Erickson on the DearMYRTLE Genealogy Blog.  Ol' Myrt thinks Ancestry.com should permit syncing to all software programs, and more.  Right on!

*  Genealogy Tip: Go Further, Go Longer by Caroline M. Pointer on the 4YourFamilyStory.com blog.  Caroline found newspaper leads in Google Books, and then used the search and copy service of the Tennessee State Library to obtain the article of interest.

*  GeneaBlog Awards 2013 by Tamura Jones on the Modern Software Experience website/blog.  Tamura selects winners based on his personal opinion.  The three he names this year are well deserved!

*  The Fifth Annual Great Genealogy Poetry Challenge Posts by Bill West on the West in New England blog.  Bill's annual collection has 11 contributors and 13 poems about ancestral localities.

*  Tips for Collaborative Genealogy: Sharing Genealogy Files Online for Free by Lisa Louise Cooke on the Lisa Louise Cooke's Genealogy Gems blog.  Lisa forgot blogs...great suggestion list otherwise!

*  50 Gifts for Genealogists This Christmas by Diane Boumenot on the One Rhode Island Family blog.  Diane provides her recommended shopping list to all of her readers.

*  What Should Genealogy Software Do? by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James has his ideas about this.

*  What Should Genealogy Software Do -- Really! by Louis Kessler on Louis Kessler's Behold Genealogy blog.  Louis responds to James's post with his own list.

*  10 Important Clues to Follow Up in Land Deeds by Kimberly Powell on the About.com Genealogy Blog.  This is an excellent article for all researchers to read, understand and put into practice.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  NN Genealogy Things You Need To Know This Morning, Sunday, 24 Nov 2013, Monday, 25 Nov 2013, Tuesday, 26 Nov 2013, Wednesday, 27 Nov 2013,  Friday, 29 Nov 2013 and Saturday, 30 Nov 2013 by Caroline M. Pointer on the 4YourFamilyStories.com blog.

*  Friday Finds - 11/29/13 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
