Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Status of Your 2023 Genealogy Goals

It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  Marcia Philbrick wrote Goal Update this week on her Heartland Genealogy blog.  Linda Stufflebean suggested this would be a good topic for SNGF.

2)  What were your 2023 genealogy goals?  How are you doing in achieving them?  [If you didn't do goals this year, what goals would you like to achieve by the end of 2023?]

3)  Write your own blog post, or leave a comment on this post, or write something on Facebook.

Here's mine:

My 2023 Genealogy Goals included:

*  Keep writing the 52 Ancestors genealogical sketches.  I have done this every week (?) but have not added some sketches to FamilySearch Family Tree profiles.   Grade = A-

*  Keep transcribing documents for the "Amanuensis Monday" posts.  I have done this every week (?) but have not added all of the transcriptions to the profiles in my RootsMagic family tree.  Grade = A-

*  Continue to collect records for descendants of my 4th great-grandparents.  This has slowed down quite a bit - I've been distracted by the need to get the family papers and photographs in order.  I wrote five 6-generation descendant reports in January but none since due to incompleteness of my family tree.  Grade = C

*  Continue to use record hints, matches, etc. to document events, with source citations, in profiles in my RootsMagic family tree.  This has slowed down considerably due to lack of time.  I still do some of it every week, but the baseball season really cuts into my research time.  Grade = C-

*  Gather family photos into one file folder and standardize photo file names.  I'm doing this almost daily, but I keep finding more photos to gather, scan, file and name.  The Reimagine mobile app has helped with the task but I have so many to work with.  I am putting all photos in the "My Pictures" file folder on my computer, but I have many duplicates in other file folders.  Grade = B.

*  Complete one year's worth of my family stories using StoryWorth.  I started fast but have slowed down.  I do have about 30 stories now but am doing a new one only once or twice a month.  Grade = B.

*  Continue chasing DNA matches to find common ancestors.  I check my AncestryDNA and MyHeritageDNA matches every week, but the 23andMe and FTDNA matches once a month.  Finding the common ancestors of new matches has slowed down considerably.  Grade = B.

I think my overall grade is probably a B-.  

New goals for the rest of the year include:

*  Go through all of my bookcases, file cabinets, boxes, and floor papers to find albums and photographs and scan them, name them, and file them.  I'm in this process now because I feel mortal. and the house is full of stuff.

*  Convert typed text to digital text for the transcribed audiotape memories of my father's siblings and our yearly Christmas letters, plus anything else that needs to be put into digital form.

*  Create PDF documents for my 52 Ancestors genealogical sketches and save them to Google Drive, iDrive and FOREVER.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Britain & Ireland, Naturalisations 1603-1700

This new collection of 12,959 records may help you discover if your ancestor became a British citizen in the 17th century. Derived from William Shaw’s Letters of Denization and Acts of Naturalization for England and Ireland, this source can reveal names, dates of naturalisation and places of origin. Some of the original images have additional notes, and you may find many in this collection were French Huguenots.

Lincolnshire Baptisms

A further 231,796 baptisms have been added to this existing collection, spanning 1539 to 1922. Baptism records are one of the key building blocks for your family tree, helping you uncover names, parents, dates and locations.

National Burial Index For England & Wales

Another 10,401 transcriptions have been added to this record collection, for the county of Herefordshire between 1631 and 1812. These records, published in partnership with the Family History Federation, can help you unearth final resting places of your ancestors, plus key dates and sometimes even other family members.

 Elizabeth Ambrose (1698-1782) is #881 on my Ahnentafel List, my 7th great-grandmother, who married  #880 Sampson Underhill (ca1692-1732) in 1718 in Salisbury, Massachusetts.

I am descended through:

Elizabeth Ambrose (or Ambruss) was born 2 October 1698 in Salisbury, Massachusetts Bay, the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (Eastman) Ambrose[1-2].

On 15 January 1717/8, she married Sampson Underhill (1692-1731) in Salisbury, Massachusetts by the Reverend Caleb Cushing[1,5].  They had four children, all born and recorded in Salisbury:

*  John Underhill (1721-1793), married 1741 Joanna Healey (1718-1809).

*  Jeremiah Underhill (1724-????).

*  Moses Underhill (1726-1804) married 1753 Anna Glidden (1738-1808).

*  Hezekiah Underhill (1727-1800), married 1751 Tabitha Sargent (1726-1803).

Sampson Underhill died before 27 March 1732 in Chester, New Hampshire.  Administration of his estate was granted to his wife, Elizabeth, on 15 May 1732[3].  The estate was finally settled on 25 August 1742 when the administrators were licensed to sell the real estate.

Elizabeth (Ambrose) Underhill married, secondly, to Benjamin Batchelder (1708-1782) before 1742 in Chester, New Hampshire[1,5].  They had one child:

*  Betty Batchelder (1742-1806).

Her father, Nathaniel Ambrose of Chester, New Hampshire wrote a will on 3 June 1745 and it was proved on 26 June 1745 in Rockingham County Probate Court[4].  In his will, he bequeathed to his daughter Elizabeth:

"Item I give unto My beloved Daughter Elisabeth Batchelder ten Pounds in Money old tenor to be paid out of my Esteat at the end of four years after my decease."

There is no known death date or burial location for Elizabeth (Ambrose) (Underhill) Batchelder.

Rabbit Holes With Randy -- Finding My School Stuff! Thank You, Dad!

 I'm still trying to climb out of several other rabbit holes, and now I'm down another one.  Time flies when you're having fun and can't resist temptation.

I continue to work on the save/donate/trash task, and have worked my way to the filing cabinets on the north wall of the genealogy cave.  Before, there were piles of papers and a lot of conference bags preventing getting into the lower drawers of the file cabinets, but I managed to get into two bottom drawers and found:

*  The collection of nondescript silver spoons carefully wrapped up in bundles.  Only some have initials on them.  I wondered where they were!  Who will want them?  

*  Several large Prudential folders (my father was an insurance agent for 25 years) with papers in them, like my baptismal card, my school report cards (3rd to 6th grades, 7th to 9th grades, 10th to 12th grades), my SAT and NMS test results, high school essays and term papers, my college transcript, my first car papers, my first life insurance policy, a portfolio of my elementary school art, some newspaper clippings mentioning my name, etc.  My father was really well organized.  

*  Yearbooks for 1956, 1957 and 1958 for Roosevelt Junior High School in San Diego.  Also my 1961 Gray Castle yearbook plus a 1971 10-year reunion booklet - I think we went to that reunion, but I have no memories of it.

My SAT scores you ask (my friend Karen did!)?  Verbal = 582, Math = 722.  [Bragging? I worked hard for those!]

This has been a really fun three days of searching and reading all of this stuff.  Will my daughters and grandchildren even look at all of this?  I guess I could put together a Zoom presentation with all of the report cards and send it to them and save it on FOREVER.  

I have no idea what family history gems wait for me in the second file cabinet, which is blocked by more binders on the floor and a lamp that holds up piles of papers.  Maybe I'll tackle that one next.  

I'm really thankful that my father was so organized.  My guess is he also had separate folders for my two brothers - I wonder if they still have them?

Where are my carrots?  All of this reminiscing and remembering leaves me hungry.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1951 Baptism Record of Randall J. Seaver

After my mother died in early 2002, we emptied her house and sold it, and I took home the "family history stuff" that nobody else wanted.  It included collections from her grandparents, parents, and her own family life.  Being "busy," I put all of the stuff in available space in my genealogy cave - the closet, file cabinets, corners, etc.  In the last three months, I've been looking through all of the "hiding places" and have found a number of records about myself and my family.

One of the treasures that I found in the file cabinets in my genealogy cave was my baptismal certificate dated 24 March 1951 (Easter) in St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in San Diego: 

The transcription of the folded card is (handwriting in italics):

I was 7 years old at the time of this ceremony and have just vague memories of it taking place.  My brother, Stanley, was baptized at the same time.  I think that this was a "sprinkle" baptism and not an "immersion" baptism.

St. Dunstan's, which was on College Avenue in San Diego, was the home church of my grand-aunt Emily (Richmond) Taylor (my father's maternal aunt) and her daughter, my first cousin once removed Dorothy (Taylor) Chamberlain and her husband, Marshall B. Chamberlain, all of whom were godparents or witnesses.  My maternal grandfather, Lyle L. Carringer, was also a godparent or witness.

I did not know the actual date of this baptism until I found this record in the papers and stuff saved by my parents all through my early life.

Randy and Brother Stan in About 1950-- Post 775 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

 I can't help it, I can't do a wordless post! This is now one of my favorite photographs:

This photograph from about 1950 is of my brother Stanley with me all dressed up for some family event.  Stan was born in 1946 (so about age 4) and I was born in 1943 (so about age 7).  This is probably the cutest photo I have of myself, and of Stan, at this age.  We were really active little boys and drove our mother crazy, but my father seemed to love everything we did, including getting in trouble. 

I had never seen this photo before until last month when I found the pictures from my mother's dresser and desktop in a shopping bag in the closet in my genealogy cave, which I put there in 2002 after my mother's death.  I scanned it, enhanced it, and colorized it using the MyHeritage photo tools. 

This photograph is all part of our family history.
