Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Genealogy Pot Luck!

I'm not in the mood for a long Saturday Night Genealogy Fun (SNGF) blog post, but I know that my readers count on me and love to have genealogy fun, so tonight (and tomorrow) let's do:

GENEALOGY POT LUCK!!

Whatever genealogy fun you want to do - please spend an hour and do it!  Then tell us about it in your own blog post, and leave a comment here which I will add to the Comments after moderation.

Here's mine:

1)  It's been a terrible week for Linda and me as many of you know - she fell on Sunday, broke her left hip bone, was transported by ambulance to Orange Coast Medical Center (Fountain Valley, CA), had her hip surgically repaired on Monday, left the hospital via ambulance on Wednesday night to a skilled nursing facility in Chula Vista (one mile from home), and is being treated there.  She has not been able to have meaningful physical therapy yet.  It's a hospital gown, hospital food, bedpans and diapers.  I can visit once a day by appointment for 30 minutes.  My daughters and I have started gathering resources for the next stop in Linda's life journey, and need education and resources.  So that's the first No Genealogy Fun League (NGFL) experience

2)  Since I got home Wednesday night, I've been able to work a bit on writing blog posts, moderating comments, checking my DNA matches, and answering email, sending text messages, and writing updates on Facebook. I even updated the last 60 TreeShare persons to my Ancestry Member Tree using RootsMagic.  That was really the only GFL experience of the week.  It's been nice to get back to some of my routine daily activities of learning, writing, sharing and researching.

3)  However, my computer (I fear it's the monitor) makes it extremely difficult to copy and paste text from one place to another.  The mouse skips words or whole lines when I try to copy - perhaps 1 in 5 tries is successful.  I do a lot of that highlighting to do bolding and different font sizes too.  Another NGFL experience.  Maybe a new computer is in order?  I use the laptop now to do some of this, like the FamilySearch Saturday posts.

4)  My GPL (Genealogy Pot Luck)?  I'm looking forward to spending some of this weekend resolving hundreds of Ancestry Record Hints, matching profiles with FamilySearch Family Tree, and adding information to RootsMagic based on what I find online.  I may even transcribe a deed for Amanuensis Monday.

5)  Life goes on here in the RJS Genealogy Cave.  It's pretty quiet without the radio or TV on, and I'm sleeping really well since I got home.  I'm trying foods that I could not prepare for us when Linda was home because of her allergies to soybeans, soybean oil, MSG, shellfish, farm-fed fish, parmesan and romano cheese, chocolate, beer, and a number of other foods.  I had a Hungry Man last night and will try a Marie Callenders Pot Roast tonight.  Pizza and lasagna coming soon, I hope!

===========================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

In 1840, a census was undertaken of surviving revolutionary war veterans and widows as part of the sixth census of the United States. The material consist of transcripts and images that are listed geographically, starting with Maine and moving south. This special census may provide names of multiple family members, which is not included in the population schedule of the 1840 US census.

Changes to Genea-Musings

There will be some changes to the home delivery of Genea-Musings:

1) Feedburner, the email service that sends daily emails with Genea-Musings content to about 4,000 subscribers of Genea-Musings to registrants, is going away in July.  I have captured a list of subscribers and will eventually employ another email system in the near future.  Life is too busy for me right now to work on it.

2)  The RSS feeds for Genea-Musings are not changing.  This is the best way to read genealogy blogs because they are indexed every day and your email Inbox does not get cluttered.  I use Feedly on a daily basis to read hundreds of blog posts every day.

3)  You can put www.geneamusings.com in your computer browser Favorites or Bookmarks and visit the website any time you want.

4)  I have enabled Comment Moderation because I'm tired of deleting 30-50 spam comments every day.  It is not a good use of my time.  If you make a Comment to a blog post (I get about 10 valid comments every week) then I will get an email and be able to Accept or Reject each one with one click.  If this doesn't work well, then I will disable Comments entirely.  Life is shorter now - I prefer doing genealogy first.

Thank you for reading my Genea-Musings.

The Best Laid Plans -- Life Happens

No blog posts besides this one today and perhaps for the rest of the week.

Linda and I are in Huntington Beach - we came up to see my grandchildren act in Moana at their local Boys and Girls Club - they all did well.

Unfortunately, at intermission of the play on Sunday, my wife Linda fell and broke her left hip.  She will have the repair operation today at Orange Coast Medical Center.  At some time this week, I hope we can transfer her to a rehab center in Chula Vista for further treatment.  How that happens is a mystery right now!  Where is a mystery right now.  Life is reality, but a mystery too.

I am staying at my daughter's house in Huntington Beach.  I have my laptop and my cell phone, so please email or message me.  I will try to post updates on my Randy Seaver Geneaholic page on Facebook.

Please pray for Linda.

UPDATE: 8 p.m. PDT:

Linda had successful hip repair surgery and came back to her room at about 3 p.m.  She now has titanium hardware in both legs.  She slept all afternoon until I had to leave at 8 p.m.

So the surgery part is over, and now the hard part - the therapy and the rehab before she can come home.

Best of the Genea-Blogs - Week of 20 to 26 June 2021

Scores of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  How to turn your genealogy to-do list into 15-minute tasks by Prudence on The Creative Family Historian.

My Genealogical Process - Part 1 of 2 by Don Taylor on Don Taylor Genealogy.

Setting the Record Straight:  6 Common Myths About Hiring a Professional Genealogist by Carolyn on Legacy Tree Genealogists.

Pesky Middle Initials by Christopher Child on Vita Brevis.

The Rest of the Gift by Jacqi Stevens on A Family Tapestry.

Vital Records Newly Available by Diane Boumenot on One Rhode Island Family.

Generate a Tree From the Shared Match Tool by Jonny Perl on DNA Painter Blog.

*  Archives of Ontario Creates New Research Guide and Updates Look of Other Guides by Gail Dever on Genealogy a la Carte.

Your Ultimate Guide to Ancestry.com Search by Family Tree Editors on Family Tree Magazine.

Lessons In Genealogical Research: Part Three by Philip Grover on Vita Brevis.

Genealogy Tip:  Always Check Back by Gena Philibert-Ortega on GenealogyBank Blog.

Two Thurstons by Marcia Philbrick on Heartland Genealogy.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  Friday's Family History Finds  by Linda Stufflebean on Empty Branches on the Family Tree.

*  Friday Fossicking 25th Jun 2021 by Crissouili on That Moment In Time.

This Week's Creme de la Creme - June 26, 2021  by Gail Dever on Genealogy a la Carte,

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and  read their articles, and add the blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I currently am reading posts from over 900 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
