Randy's Day 3 (Saturday, 4 March) #NotAtRootsTech2023

 I am not attending the in-person RootsTech 2023 conference in Salt Lake City this weekend (2-4 March), but I am attending virtually on the RootsTech 2023 website - https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/.

To prepare for the virtual event, I added a number of sessions to My Playlist for all three days, and there are other classes that were pre-recorded for RootsTech 2023.  The RootsTech 2023 On-Demand sessions are listed here.

1)  Today, I watched a number of sessions, either the whole session or major parts of sessions:

2)  I briefly "visited" the virtual Expo Hall today, and read the product descriptions of some of the exhibitors.  I don't recall which of them I looked at.

The Expo Hall closed at 3 p.m. Mountain time.

3)  My Relatives at RootsTech count is up to 70,102, and includes a first cousin once removed, a 3rd cousin once removed, and some 4th and 5th cousins.

4)  I posted three blog posts today about RootsTech 2023:

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Best RootsTech 2023 Experience

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  Did you attend the RootsTech 2023 conference this weekend in-person in Salt Lake City or virtually in your genealogy cave on the computer?  What one keynote talk, class session, or Expo Hall feature impressed you the most?

2) Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own blog post.

Here's mine:

I attended RootsTech 2023 virtually, and devoted many hours to watching videos.  I did not watch any of the Keynote talks, and ventured into the virtual Expo Hall but found it hard to Chat with many vendors.

The most impressive, fun and helpful class session I watched was  DO GENEALOGY Step-By-Step, by Janet Hovorka, Diahan Southard, Crista Cowan.

This methodology class was really well done - lots of discussion about how to perform the task, and lots of audience participation in the session led by all three presenters in a discussion format.  They came up with a four-step process to be successful - 1)  ask spotlight questions, 2) sift the information you have, 3) map out your research plan, and 4)  Dig into doing genealogy using your research plan.  Then do it over and over again.  The audience participation included crafting the spotlight questions, and identifying records needed to answer the questions.

"Connect Our Kids" Program at RootsTech 2023

Helping Foster Children Learn Who They Are by Connecting to Their Past

RootsTech, the largest genealogy and family celebration event in the world, announced today that Connect Our Kids, a nonprofit organization pioneering technology to find families, build connections, and create community for children in foster care, will present their organization’s story live on the RootsTech 2023 main stage on Friday, March 3. Connect Our Kids’ Family Connections platform provides child welfare professionals tools to find contact information for extended families for youth in foster care—with the mission of finding extended relatives and natural support networks who will offer lifelong connections, support, and belonging. Find out more at RootsTech.org.

Jennifer Jacobs and Jessica Stern, co-founders of Connect Our Kids, will share their organization’s incredible story in person with the global, family-oriented community of RootsTech 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and live online at RootsTech.org.

”Knowing your family history helps you know who you are and where you come from. This information helps to heal trauma,” said Jessica Stern, co-founder of Connect Our Kids. “FamilySearch is an incredible and powerful tool for children in foster care to discover their roots, which leads to healing trauma and moving into adulthood with confidence.”

“The theme of RootsTech 2023 is ‘Uniting,’” said Jen Allen, director of RootsTech. “We are pleased to use the RootsTech platform to help raise awareness for this important cause of uniting children with family members who can help them succeed in life.”

Connecting Foster Children with their Families

Connect Our Kids relies on 300+ public databases to help child welfare professionals find potential connections to living relatives for those in the foster care system. Before Connect Our Kids, social workers and volunteers had only their own sleuthing skills and a combination of web searches, telephone calls, knocking on doors, and social media searches—an arduous and time-intensive process. With Family Connections, an online and mobile app, the search process can begin in seconds, right from a smartphone.

Research shows that foster placement in the home of extended family and natural support networks is safer for the youth and increases the likelihood of success significantly. This can include reduced trauma, higher participation in extracurricular activities, higher levels of employment, and preserved family connection. An estimated 100,000 children in the United States are currently waiting for permanent placement due to the termination of parental rights. Another 400,000 are in the foster system and could benefit from Connect Our Kids technology tools.

The Family Connections platform is available free of charge to child welfare professionals at ConnectOurKids.org due to the generosity of family foundations and private donors.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Randy's Day 2 (Friday, 3 March) #NotAtRootsTech2023

 I am not attending the in-person RootsTech 2023 conference in Salt Lake City this weekend (2-4 March), but I am attending virtually on the RootsTech 2023 website - https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/.

To prepare for the virtual event, I added a number of sessions to My Playlist for all three days, and there are other classes that were pre-recorded for RootsTech 2023.  The RootsTech 2023 On-Demand sessions are listed here.

1)  Today, I watched a number of sessions, either the whole session or major parts of sessions:

*  CeCe Moore, Mitch Morrissey, McKell Keeney - Investigative Genetic Genealogy: A Conversation with Industry Leaders;   https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/session/investigative-genetic-genealogy-a-conversation-with-industry-leaders?lang=eng

*  Janet Hovorka, Diahan Southard, Crista Cowan - DO GENEALOGY Step-By-Step:   https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/session/do-genealogy-step-by-step

*  FamilySearch -- Searching FamilySearch Record Images That Haven't Been Transcribed;   https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/session/searching-familysearch-record-images-that-havent-been-transcribed

*  David Rencher, Lynn Turner - The FamilySearch Library: Exploring and Understanding the Resources Available to Researchers; https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/session/the-familysearch-library-exploring-and-understanding-the-resources-available-to-researchers

2)  I visited" the virtual Expo Hall today, and read the product descriptions of many of the exhibitors.  Some of the products I looked at included:

*  Generations Studio -- go back in time and discover your visual roots:    https://www.generations.studio/

*  GENXT -- Cross-database DNA matching:   https://www.genxt.network/

*  The 200 Year Challenge -- 4/5/6 generation pedigree charts naming all of your Direct Ancestors from the last 200 years:  https://www.200-yearchallenge.com/

*  3DGenV -- a web-based application to generate 3D family trees from GEDCOM files:   https://3dgenv.com/Site/index.php#000

*  Artifcts -- where ‘stuff' and stories meet:  https://artifcts.com/

*  Bright Branches -- Bring your family tree to life with the TV app for Apple TV:    https://brightbranches.com/

*  Cite-builder -- a citation generator for genealogists:  https://cite-builder.com/

*  Genealogy Bargain$ -- FREE downloadable genealogy cheat sheets:    https://genealogybargains.com/welcome-rootstech-2023-attendees/

I will "visit" more exhibitors on Saturday.

3)  In other news,  my Relatives at RootsTech count is up to 68,325, including a first cousin once removed, a 3rd cousin once removed, and some 4th and 5th cousins.

4)  I posted three blog posts today about RootsTech 2023:

MyHeritage Launches 3rd DNA Quest Initiative

 I received this information from Daniel Horowitz of MyHeritage today:

====================================

And for our final RootsTech announcement, something wonderful.

One of the things that makes me most proud to work for MyHeritage is the company’s commitment to make the world a better place. In that spirit, it gives me great pleasure to tell you that we have just launched a third installment of our DNA Quest project to reunite adoptees with their birth families through DNA testing.

As part of this installment, 5,000 DNA kits will be donated to adoptees and family members searching for people who were adopted. Anyone in the world over the age of 18 who meets that criteria is welcome to apply from now until March 17, 2023.

DNA Quest has already made a huge impact with its previous rounds in 2018 and 2019. Countless lives have been changed forever and families brought together as a result of this project. You can read about some of their stories on our blog.  There is a video of this initiative here

Please help us spread the word so anyone who can benefit from this project will hear about it and will be able to apply in time!

==========================================

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary subscription to MyHeritage, and gave received other material consideration in past years. I uploaded my autosomal DNA raw data to their DNA product. This does not affect my objective analysis of MyHeritage products.  I am a subscriber to Family Tree Webinars and love it.
