Seavers in the News -- Obituary of Mrs. Lena J. Seaver (1892-1983) of Freeland, Michigan

"Seaver, Mrs. Lena J., Freeland, Michigan

"Passed away Friday morning, May 13, 1983, at the Provincial House Nursing Home in Midland after a lingering illness.  Age 91 years.  Lena J. Whitman was born April 15, 1892, in Freeland and had been a lifelong resident of this area.  She was a member of the Church of God (Seventh) Day of Freeland and its Helping Hand Society of which she held many offices.  On April 15, 1910, in Freeland she married to Warren Seaver who predeceased her in 1945.  Surviving are three sons, Leray, Midland; Raymond, Saginaw; Alton, Freeland; fifteen grandchildren, thirty five great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren.  A son, Clyde Lewellen Seaver, predeceased her in 1981.

"Funeral services will take place 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 16, 1983, at the Cunningham-TRaylor Funeral Home in Freeland.  Elder Floy d Turner will officiate with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Freeland.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., on Sunday from 2:00 until 9:00 p.m., and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Church of God (Seventh) Day."

Lena Julia Whitman (1892-1983) was born 15 April 1892 in Freeland, Michigan, the daughter of Oscar Marion and Maria Louise (Allen) Whitman.  She died 13 May 1983 in Midland, Michigan.  Lena married Warren E. Seaver (1882-1945) on 15 April 1910 in Freeland, Michigan.  They had four children:

*  Leroy Oscar Seaver (1911-1997), married 1932 Doris Marjorie Aspin (1914-1995).

*  Arthur Rasymond Seaver (1913-1998), married 1939 Maxine Katherine Turner (1918-2008).

*  Clyde Lewellen Seaver (1917-1981), married 1941 Marjorie Jean Richmond (1923-2001).

*  Alton Gerald Seaver (1920-1988), married 1946 Irene Elizabeth Weber (1923-1972).

Warren E. Seaver is my 5th cousin 3 times removed.  Our common Seaver ancestor is my 7th great-grandfather Joseph Seaver (1672-1754).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a great obituary.   I am glad that  I can honor Lena J. (Whitmn) Seaver (1892-1983) today.

Catherine Mae Balsamo was born 1 April 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Vito and Florence L. (Kredowski) Balsamo.  She died 20 June 1980 in Detroit, Michigan.  Catherine married (1) Joseph Salvatore Pagliolo (1913-2002) in 1946 in Detroit, Michigan.  They had three children:

*  Joseph Pagliolo (c1948-????).

*  Robert Pagliolo (c1950-????)

*  Michael Pagliolo (c1952-????).

Catherine married (2) Norman Eugene Seaver (1930-2011) on 29 October 1953 in Thurston County, Washington.  They had three children:

*  Norman Jacob Seaver (1954-2014), married Marsha L. --?-- (1956-????).

*  Victor Donald Seaver (1956-????), married 1987 Lois M. Kay(1951-????).

*  Frederick Frank Seaver (1958-2001).

I am not related to Catherina Mae (Balsamo) (Pagliolo) Seaver.  I am not related to Norman Eugene Seaver (1930-2011) to my knowledge - he is descended from Christian and Lydia (Kissinger) Seaver who married in 1834 in Stark County, Ohio. 

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a short death notice with only family information.  I am glad that I can honor Catherine Mae (Balsamo) (Pagliolo) Seaver today.

Leslie L. Seaver (1906-1980) was born 1 September 1906 in Hickman, Tennessee, the son of James Leslie and Ada Amelia (Coleman) Seaver.  He died 8 December 1980 in Highland Park, Michigan.  Leslie married Hilda Mae Handback (1916-1993) on 10 June 1939 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.  They had at least two children:

*  James Reese Seaver (1940-2007), married Catherine --?--.

*  Barbara Seaver (????-????), married --?-- Gist. 

Leslie L. Seaver (1906-1980) is not a Seaver cousin to my knowledge - he is descended from Henry and Elizabeth (--?--) Seaver who settled in Virginia in 1770.  

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a short death notice with little information.  I am glad that I can honor Leslie L.. Seaver today.

"Mrs. Seaver, active in church, hospital, scouting

"PORT HURON -- Mrs. Cornelia West Seaver, 88, formerly of 2220 Brandywine, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 1979 in St. Clair County Medical Centre, Goodells, after a lengthy illness.

"Mrs. Seaver was active in community affairs for many years, serving on the Port Huron Hospital Board of Trustees for more than a decade.  She participated in the re-activation of the Port Huron Hospital aid Society, now known as Port Huron Hospital Auuxiliary.  She was a member of the board of directors for many years.

"Mrs. Seaver was a director of the local board of the Girl Scouts of America.  She was a charter member of Port Huron Town Hall and of the International Symphony Orchestra.

"A lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Ladies Aid Society, the Organ Guild and the Altar Guild.  The altar of Grace Episcopal Church was given to the Church by her family in memory of her father, Wilbur F. Davidson.

"Davidson introduced the first commercial use of electricl ighting in the city on Dec. 19, 1883.  He used the then recently perfected 'Edison electric light' to illuminate his dry goods store, located on Military Street.

"The Davidson home at 1797 Military Street was listed on the Narional and State Registers of Historic Places on May 6, 1973.  Mrs. Seaver was born in that home and was the only living child of Davidson to attend the dedication.

"A member of Lambda Rho Tau Charity League, she was chose Queen of Charity to reign at the annual May Day Ball in 1951.

"Mrs. Seaver attended local schools as well as Miss Liggett's School, Detroit.  She was born Nov. 10, 1890.

"She married Alfred E. West Oct. 30, 1912.  West was a local industrialist and president of the Port Huron Engine and Thresher Co. from 1910 to 1924.  They lived at 1707 Military St. until Mr. West's death in 1950.

"On July 31, 1960, Mrs. West married Clarence J. Seaver, Franklin, former Port Huron resident and then reti red executive vice-president of Novi Equipment Co., Novi.  He died June 29. 1976.

"Mrs. Seaver is survived by two sons, Wlbur W. West and Alfred E. West, Jr., both of Port Huron, four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

"Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Grace Episcopal Church.  The Rev. Dr. Richard E. Daniels, associate rector will officiate.  Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.

"Visiting hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.  Honorary pallbearers are Albert B. Carlisle, H. Charles Knill, Dr. Thomas H. Bottomley, Allen B. Stevens, Earl H. Donaldson, George Waters, Roy E. Schulthess, Frank J. McCabe, F. Granger Weil, Eugene H. Moak, Frank J. Haynes, Neil H. Davis, Fred I. Riggin, Jr. and Dr. J.L. Kleinstiver.

"Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or to Port Huron Hospital."

Cornelia T. Davidson was born 10 November 1890 in Port Huron, Michigan, the daughter of Wilbur Fisk and Margaretta Page (Turner) Davidson.  She died 25 October 1979 in St. Clair County, Michigan.  Cornelia married (1) Alfred Edgar West (1876-1950) on 30 October 1912 in Port Huron, Michigan.  They had two sons.  She married (2) Clarence John Seaver (1891-1976) on 31 July 1960 in Port Huron.  They had no children together.

Clarence John Seaver (1891-1976) is not a Seaver relation to me - he was descended from Arno Seaver (1800-1845) of England and Ontario, Canada.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person's obituary has full information about the person's occupation, associations, or accomplishments.  I am glad that I can honor Cornelia T. "Gilbert H. Seaver, Ford Engineer

"Memorial services for Gilbert H. Seaver, 61, a metallurgical engineer for Ford Motor Co., will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Birmingham Unitarian Church, 651 N. Woodward, Beverly Hills.

"Mr. Seaver died Monday at his home in West Bloomfield Township after a short illness.

"He has been employed by Ford Motor Co. for the past 25 years.  Prior to that, he worked for Cleveland Twist Drill Co. and Morris Chain Co. in Ohio.

"Mr. Seaver was a member of the American Society for Metals, Sigma Xi fraternity, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and the American Scandinavian Association.

"He is survived by his wife, Irene; one son, Robert; one daughter, Mrs. Linda Anne Blain, and one sister.

"Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Haley Funeral Home, 24525 Northwestern Highway, Southfield."

"Clarence J. Seaver

"PORT HURON -- Clarence J. Seaver, 85, of 2220 Brandywine Lane, died Tuesday in Rose Villa Nursing Center, Roseville.

"He was born Feb 23, 1891 in Port Huron.  He was a former resident of Franklin Hills and had resided in Port Huron for the past 15 years.

"  He was a retired vice president and general manager of the Novi Equipment Company, retiring in 1960.

"He married Cornelia West July 30, 1960 in Port Huron.

"He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Raymond F. Adams, Barbara Seaver, Southfield; and Mrs. Tom Roseberry, Grand Rapids; two stepsons, Wilbur W. West and Alfred E. West, Jr., both of Port Huron, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

"Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Arthur Smith Funeral Home -- North Chapel.  The Rev. Canon D.R. Lees of Grace Episcopal Church will officiate.

*  Mary Stewart Seaver (1919-1991), married 1942 Raymond Adams (1918-????).

*  Barbara McCall Seaver (1921-2010).

*  Dorothy Ann "DeeDee" Seaver (1930-2015), married 1953 Thomas Roseberry (1927-2014).

He married (2) Cornelia (Davidson) West (1890-1979) on 31 July 1968 in Port Huron.  They had no children together.

I am not a Seaver cousin to Clarence John Seaver.  He is descended from Arnon C. Seaver (1800-1845) who was born in England and settled in Ontario.

Seavers in the News -- James W. Seaver Dies in 1967 in Grand Haven, Michigan

This week's entry is from The Herald-Palladium [Benton Harbor, Mich.] newspaper dated 16 October 1966, page 10:

The transcription of the article is:

"SERVI CES TUESDAY

"GRAND HAVEN (AP) -- Funeral services for Grand Haven industrialist James W. Seaver, 59, will be held Tuesday.  Seaver, president and founder of Seaver Industrial Finishing Co., was stricken by an apparent heart attack Saturday at his cottage near Cadillac.  His widow, Lila, and three sons, David, James and Ronald, survive."

James Wesley Seaver was born 19 April 1908 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Alfred Edward Floyd and Gertrude Bertha (Danhof) Seaver.  He died 15 October 1967 in Grand Haven, Michigan.  He married Lila Gertrude Hieftje (1912-2002) on 20 June 1930 in Holland, Michigan.  They had three children:

.

*  Ronald Jay Seaver (1933-1994), married 1955 Alice Joyce Kruizenga (1934-????).

*  James Michael Seaver (1938-1988).

*  David Lee Seaver (1940-????), married Sharon Ann Jerovsek (1938-????).

I my be related to James Wesley Seaver (1908-1967).  His last known Seaver ancestor was John Seaver (1778-1841) who married Susanna Trumbull in 1802.  John Seaver is probably a descendant of Robert Seaver (1608-1683), but John's parents are not known at this time.

Seavers in the News -- Gertrude Fanny Seaver Dies in 1963 in Ithaca, Michigan

 Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Lansing [Mich.] State Journal newspaper dated 6 March 1963:

The transcription of the article is:

"Gertrude F. Seaver

"ITHACA -- Mrs. Gertrude Fanny Seaver, 74, of 225 E. Emerson St., died Tuesday in a Wyandotte hospital.  She is survived by the husband, Bert; one daughter, Mrs. Janet Bublitz of South Ile; one son, Lewis of Grosse Ile; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Eggerman of Cleveland, and three grandchildren.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Beebe Funeral Home here.  Burial will be in Ithaca Cemetery."

The source citation is:

This obituary mainly includes the family members of Gertrude F. Seaver, including the names of her husband, children and sister, plus her residence but no social affiliations,   

Gertrude Fanny Lewis was born 25 July 1888 in Ithaca, Michigan, the daughter of Henry E. and Fanny E. (Brown) Lewis.  She married Milo Bert Seaver (1887-1978) on 3 June 1909 in Ithaca, Michigan.  They had two children:

*  Lewis Ivan Seaver (1911-1990), married 1949 Mary Elizabeth Plant (1920-1999).

*  Jeannette F. Seaver (1913-1977), married 1941 Frederick William Bublitz (1915-1992).

Milo Bert Seaver (1887-1978) is a 5th cousin 3 times removed of mine.  Our most recent common Seaver ancestor is my 7th great-grandfather Joseph Seaver (1672-1754).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person's obituary contains few relatives. I am glad that I can honor Gertrude Fanny (Lewis)  Seaver today.

Seavers in the News - Lynn W. Seaver Dies in 1958 in Battle Creek, Michigan

  It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the  Battle Creek [Mich.] Enquirer newspaper dated 8 February 1958:

The transcription of the article is:

"Lynn W. Seaver

"Lynn W. Seaver, 61, a lifelong resident of this area, died at his home in Pennfield Township at 8 a.m. today.  He had been in ill health for about a year but had been at his work at the Clark Equipment Co. yesterday.  He had been employed as a truck assembler there for the last 27 years.  Mr. Seaver was born in Battle Creek June 20, 1896, the son of Samuel and Rose (Hubbard) Seaver.  He married Clara M. Bauman here Nov. 14, 1921.  She survives.  Also surviving are one brother, Earl Seaver of Benton Harbor and 12 nieces and nephews.  Mr. Seaver was a member of the Calvary Baptish Church and a veteran of World War I."

This obituary provides the name, death date and place, age, birthdate and place, parents names, siblings names, an occupation, and associations.

Harris Lynn Wylie Seaver was born 20 June 1896 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the son of Samuel W. and Rose M. (Hubbard) Seaver.  He died 8 February 1958 in Battle Creek.  He married Clara M. Bauman (1895-1972) on 14 November 1921 in Calhoun County, Mivchigan.  They had no children. 

Harris Lynn Wylie Seaver is my 4th cousin 3 times removed, with the common Seaver ancestor being my 6th great-grandfather Robert Seaver (1702-1752).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person works at his job for a long period of time. I am glad that I can honor Lynn W. Seaver today.

Seavers in The News - Charles H. Seaver (1868-1942) Dies in Michigan

 It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Times Herald [Port Huron, Mich.] newspaper dated 12 December 1942:

The transcription of the article is:

"Charles H. Seaver

"Charles H. Seaver, 74, of 5258 Horger avenue, East Dearborn, former Port Huron resident, died unexpectedly this morning in his home.

"He was born in Milford, Mich., Jan. 12, 1868. He was employed by the Ford Motor Car company for 30 years.

"He is survived by his widow, and two stepsons, George W. Chappelle, Port Huron, and Harry Chappelle, Detroit.

"Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in a Milford funeral home.  Burial will be in the Milford cemetery."

The source citation is:

This obituary provides a name, a birth date, a birth place, an implied death date, a death place, an age, a burial location, and the names of two step-sons, but not the name of his widow.

Charles L. Seaver (not "H.") was born 12 January 1868 in Milford, Mich., the son of William Edwin and Elizabeth Frances (Armstrong) Seaver.  He married (1) Ella D. Eaton (1862-1923) in 1898, and they had no children.  He married (2) Harriet Marion (Carr) Chappelle (1876-1947) in 1924, and they had no children.

Charles L. Seaver (1868-1942) is my 4th cousin 4 times removed, with common Seaver ancestors of my 7th great-grandparents Joseph and Mary (Read) Seaver. 

There are over 9,500 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person leaves no descendants.  I am glad that I can honor Charles L. Seaver today.

Tuesday's Tip: Research in the Michigan Marriage Records, 1867-1952

The record collection for Michigan Marriage Records, 1867-1952 is one of my favorite record collections.  It is online at Ancestry.com with 15,032,934 name indexed entries.  Note that this is a collection of marriage certificate digital images filed between 1867 and 1952.

The original source for this online collection is the Michigan, Marriage Records, 1867–1952. Michigan Department of Community Health, Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics.


On Ancestry.com, the user will find this collection search page in the Card Catalog:

The description of the information in this record collection is (from the Ancestry.com collection page):

This collection contains marriage registers (1868-1925) as well as licenses and certificates (1926-1952) from the state of Michigan. In some cases, marriages prior to 1868 may have been recorded in a later register and may be found in this collection. Marriage records are particularly valuable documents because they often provide much more than names of the bride and groom and a marriage date. While forms differ, you may find the following details among the records:

• name
• residence
• spouse
• marriage date and place
• race/color
• age
• occupation
• witnesses
• father’s name
• mother’s name

Due to privacy laws, images are only available for records that are more than 75 years old.

I searched for Seaver as a last name, checked the Exact box, and saw 162 results:

I clicked on the first match, and saw the information extracted for the marriage of Seth Seaver and Alice Ohman:

As you can see, this record summary provides the person's name, gender, race, age, birth year, birth place, license county, marriage date, marriage place, residence place, father's name, mother's name, spouse's name, county file name, and state file number.  The user can click on the spouse's name to see that person's information.

Plus, there is an image of the marriage record with even more information (two screens):

The "prizes" on these records are the names, birth places, father's names, mother's names, occupation, marriage date, marriage place, and witnesses.  

For my key surnames, this collection has these numbers of exact records:

The Ancestry "database number" for this collection is 9093.  I have over 420 profiles in my Ancestry Family Tree with a pending Hint in this collection.  I know that I have collected some of the entries already.
