Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Best "Genealogy Find" This Week (or Month)

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -
Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music):

1)  What was your best "genealogy find" this week (or this month, or this year)?  Was it a new ancestor, a new record, a new conclusion drawn, a new photograph, or something else?

2)  Tell us in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook.  Be sure to leave a comment with a link to your blog post on this post.

Here's mine:

While working on the Ephraim Buck genealogy sketch on Wednesday, I noted that all I had for his death was "1734" with no day/month, no location, and no source.  I tried to improve that date based on a record or some source.  A search on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, WikiTee, Geni, Google, and American Ancestors found no death, burial, or probate record.  However, I found several land records in Middlesex County, Massachusetts on FamilySearch Historical Records by browsing the deed indexes and captured several deed images.  One of them was very helpful - here is my abstract of the deed:

"Ephraim Buck, yeoman of Wilmington, sold two parcels of land in Woburn to his son Ephraim Buck, husbandman of Wilmington, on 15 March 1738/9. for 200 pounds in money.  The first parcel was the homestead now in Wilmington bounds containing about 50 acres adjoining.  The land was bounded easterly on Andover road, northerly by Daniel Eames, westerly by Maple Meadow in Woburn, and southerly by his brother Samuel Buck.  A second parcel was the land purchased by Ephraim Buck from Benjamin Johnson.  He reserved one half of the homestead, the barn, and the land bounded on Andover road for his use and benefit for his lifetime.  The deed was signed by Ephraim and his wife Esther Buck, who relinquished her thirds.  The deed was recorded on 21 June 1742."

The clincher here is that Ephraim's wife, Esther (Wagget) Buck is identified in this deed, and it was executed on 15 March 1738/9.  So Ephraim Buck was still alive on 15 March 1738/9.  It was recorded in the record book on 21 June 1742.  That doesn't mean that Ephraim Buck died before that date, but it is a possible clue that he did.

So I was able to add a death date of "after 15 March 1738/9" to Ephraim's life sketch.

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Ephraim Buck Jr. was born 13 July 1676 in Woburn, Massachusetts, the son of Ephraim and Sarah (Brooks) Buck of Woburn[1].  Ephraim was known as Ephraim Jr. until his father died in 1720, and then was known as Ephraim Sr.

Ephraim married Esther Waggett (1673-1748) on 1 December 1696 in Woburn[2] at age 20.  She was the daughter of Thomas and Susanna (White) Waggett of Boston.  Ephraim and Esther had six children, all born and recorded in the Woburn town vital records, except for the last two children.

*  Sarah Buck (1697-????), married (1) 1718 Ebenezer Fish (1693-1726); (2) 1729 William Fisk (1695-????).
*  Hester Buck (1700-????).
*  Ephraim Buck (1702-1789), married (1) 1726 Abigail Pierce (1706-1728); (2) 1728 Mary Wood (1705-1794).
*  Susanna Buck (1705-1754), married 1729 Ebenezer Fisk (1703-1783).
*  Isaac Buck (1706-1780), married 1729 Ruth Graves (1711-????)
*  Rachel Buck (1708-????)

Ephraim Buck Sr. of Woburn wrote his will on 23 November 1717, and it was proved in Middlesex County Probate Court on 20 March 1720/1[3].  In the will, Ephraim gave property to his son, Ephraim Buck, Jr.
"Item.  I Give to my two sons namly Ephraim Buck and Samuell Buck all my land and medow lying on the Northerly side of Andover Row that is not otherwise Desposed of, Provided that they pay out unto the several person hereafter Named the several sums assignd to them in this my last will and testament."
The town of Wilmington was formed from the towns of Woburn, Reading and Billerica in 1730. The Buck homestead was located in Wilmington after the town was formed.

On 30 December 1734, Benjamin Johnson, yeoman of Woburn, sold land in Woburn to Ephraim Buck and Ephraim Buck, Jr., both husbandmen of Wilmington, for 150 pounds[4]. The tract of upland, swamp and meadow land was 22 acres in Wilmington, bounded southeasterly by Maple Meadow River, northeasterly by Ladder Pole swamp and Philip Alexander's land, northwesterly by the Young Men's lots, and southwesterly by a line to the first bound.  This deed was recorded on 29 July 1735.

On 15 March 1738/9, Ephraim Buck, yeoman of Wilmington, sold two parcels of land in Woburn to his son Ephraim Buck, husbandman of Wilmington for 200 pounds[5]. He reserved one half of the homestead, the barn, and the land bounded on Andover road for his lifetime.  The deed was signed by Ephraim and his wife Esther Buck, who relinquished her thirds.  The deed was recorded on 21 June 1742.

Ephraim Buck died sometime between 15 March 1738/9 when he signed a deed and perhaps before 21 June 1742[5] when the deed was registered.  However, the death was not recorded in the Wilmington or Woburn vital record books.  His burial location is not known.

Ephraim Buck has no probate record in Middlesex County Probate Court records.

NOTE: In 2014, Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog. I have extended this theme in 2021 for an eighth year to 416 Ancestors in 416 Weeks. The list of 52 Ancestors biographies from my great-grandparents to the 7th great-grandparents (in work) is in https://www.geneamusings.com/p/ancestor-biographies.html.
