Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Genealogy Pot Luck Again!

I'm not in the mood for a long Saturday Night Genealogy Fun (SNGF) blog post, but I know that my readers count on me and love to have genealogy fun, so tonight (and tomorrow) let's do:

GENEALOGY POT LUCK!!

Whatever genealogy fun you want to do - please spend an hour and do it!  Then tell us about it in your own blog post, and leave a comment here which I will add to the Comments after moderation.

Here's mine:

1)  First the No Genealogy Fun League stuff:  Linda was given a discharge notice for Friday morning by the Skilled Nursing Facility she is in because she cannot do her physical therapy.  My daughter Lori came down on Wednesday night and we visited four memory care plus skilled nursing care facilities on Thursday, and selected one on Friday.  We went there again and signed papers on Friday.  Lori has sorted clothes, bathroom and hygiene stuff, and photos for Linda's room on Friday night and Saturday.  Linda's move-in date at ActivCare at Rolling Hills Ranch will be either Monday or Tuesday.  This is why there has been limited genea-blogging this week!

2)  The only real Genealogy Fun I've had today so far is looking through all of my family photographs for pictures of our family, my daughters' families, and Linda's birth family to find photos for a framed photo collection.  I found photos in my genealogy collection that weren't in my "Randy Seaver Family" collection in "My Pictures" and copied them there.  I even took a photo of Lori on the floor with photos and clippings as she worked at doing the framed collage.  She is so creative and helpful.

Here is one of the family photographs going into the collage:

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1672 Baptism of Ruth Parker (1672-1720) in Roxbury, Massachusetts

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the Baptism entry for Ruth Parker in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1672 in the Roxbury Vital Records book:
The marriage entry is  the first one at the top of the page:

The transcription of this record is:

"PARKER, Ruth, d. John, bp. 27 : m : 1672. C.R. 1."

The source citation for this record is:

Vital Records of Roxbury, Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849 (Salem, Mass.: The Essex Institute, 1925, 2 Volumes), Births, page 268, Ruth Parker baptism entry, 27 x month 1672.

This is an entry in a digitized published book for births, marriages and deaths in Roxbury, Massachusetts, which was derived from town record books and other records.  It is a Derivative Source with Secondary Information and Direct Evidence of the baptism of  Ruth Parker.

This record is for the baptism of Ruth Parker.  Other records indicate she was born on 23 October 1672.  Ruth Parker (1672-1726) was the daughter John and Sarah (--?--) Parker of Roxbury.  She married Edmund Rice (1663-1726), who was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (King) Rice of Marlborough, Massachusetts.  They married  on 15 November 1692 in Marlborough.

Edmund and Ruth (Parker) Rice are my 7th great-grandparents, through their daughter Dinah Rice (1693-1725) who married Nathan Brigham (1693-1784)  in 1717.

Randy's 1961 High School Yearbook Photo -- Post 676 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I can't help it, I can't do a wordless post! This is one of my favorite photographs:

This is my high school graduation and yearbook photo from San Diego High School in June 1961.  My draft registration card said I was 5'7" tall and 120 pounds when I turned 18 in October.  I had a growth spurt in 1959 and 1960.  Oops, I'm afraid I missed the 60th reunion this year!

This photo was colorized with the MyHeritage tools.

Carringers in the News -- Beulah Mae Carringer Dies in 1968 in Rimersburg, Pennsylvania

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Pittsburgh [Penn.] Press newspaper dated 2 July 1968:

The transcription of this article is:

"Beulah Mae Carringer

"RIMERSBURG -- Mrs. Beulah Mae Carringer, a former Pittsburgh resident and employee of the Allegheny County treasurer's office, died yesterday at Brookville Hospital, Jefferson County.

"Mrs. Carringer, 80, of 222 Acme St., moved to this Clarion County community in 1963 when she retired from the treasurer's office.

"She was a member of United Methodist Church here and the Eastern Star of Pittsburgh.

"Surviving are a son, Albert, at home; a brother, John R. Flick of Teaneck, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Belle Croyle of Kittaning and four grandchildren.

"Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Moore-Kline Funeral Home here.  Burial will be in Rimdersburg Cemetery."

The source citation is:

"Beulah Mae Carringer," The Pittsburgh [Penn.] Press newspaper, obituary, Tuesday, 2July 1968, page 33, column 4, Beulah Mae Carringer obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 12 July 2021).

This obituary provides a death date and place, an age, her son's and siblings' names, and some information about employment and associations.

Beulah Mae Flick was born 28 May 1888 in Toby, Clarion county, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harry Belle and Eva Mae (Barr) Flick.  She died 1 July 1968 in Rimersburg, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Beulah married Albert Miller Carringer (1880-1952) on 30 June 1910 in Rimersburg.  They had two children:

*  Albert Vincent Carringer (1911-1970), married 1937 Marcella Elizabeth Stein (1916-1995).
*  Thelma Bell Carringer (1913-1913).

I am a second cousin two times removed to Albert Miller Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851).

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a well-written obituary that lists her associations and family members.  I am glad that I can honor Beulah Mae (Flick) Carringer today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

Monday Genea-Pourri - Week Ending 12 July 2021

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past two weeks:

1)  Hosted the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) Board Meeting in a Zoom Meeting last Wednesday, and reported on the Newsletter, Research Group meeting, and DNA Interest Group meeting.

2)  Attended the San Diego Genealogical society (SDGS) meeting on Saturday, with Christine Cohen as the speaker.  Her two presentations were "Indexes Are the Key To Unlocking the Records" and "The Basics of Probates."

3)  Wrote and posted a biographical sketch of my 7th great-grandfather #610 Edmund Rice (1663-1726)  for my 52 Ancestors post on Friday, 25 June.

5)  AncestryDNA added 42 new DNA matches this past week, with 3 new ThruLines and  MyHeritage added 20 new DNA matches.   Reviewed the new DNA matches on  AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.  Added Notes to 3 more AncestryDNA matches with cM values, relationships and known shared ancestors, and added 3 ThruLines to RootsMagic.

6)  There were several sessions working in the RootsMagic software program to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 43,163 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 18).

7)  Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles.  I now have 64,300 persons in my RootsMagic file (up 39), and 139.663 source citations (up 183).   I TreeShared with my Ancestry Member Tree one time the past week updating 92 profiles, and I resolved 603 Ancestry Hints.  I've fallen behind on the Ancestry Record Hints with 153,771 to be resolved, but I work on them almost daily.

8)  Wrote 14 Genea-Musings blog posts the past week, of which two were a press release.  The most viewed post the past two weeks was Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1692 Marriage of Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker in Marlborough, Massachusetts with over 331 views.

9)  I bought a new Dell All-in-One C5400 desktop computer on Tuesday last week at Costco, brought it home and set it up, and had most of my software and genealogy files up and running on Thursday.

10)  I am still fine here at the Genea-cave, hunkered down and not going out much after Week 69 of COVID-19 isolation.  Linda is still at the convalescent hospital (12 days now) and has made little progress with physical therapy for her left hip and leg - it hurts to move it.  I have visited every day but only for 30 minutes out in the patio, although I did see the PT/OT folks twice.  I went to church on Sunday and saw many friends of ours.  The Padres season continues, and I went to the Saturday game with the Rockies and saw my brother Scott and his family;  the Padres are now 53-40 (3-4 the past week) and have more injuries.  I went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Other than that, it was stay-at-home on the computer doing (mainly) genealogy, plus eating, sleeping, laundry, cleaning, cooking, and a little yard work.
