===========================================

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Super Bowl LIII (2019) Sunday

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

It's Super Bowl Weekend in America - the whole country (well, almost) will watch the game between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon at 6:30 p.m. EST (3:30 PST).

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1)  What is your favorite National Football League team?  [For those that are not American football fans, but fan of another sports team, substitute your favorite team]  Why are you a fan of this team?  How long have you been a fan of your favorite team?

2)  What is the genealogy of your favorite team?  When did it start playing, what leagues has it played in?

3)  Have you worked for the team in any capacity, or attended games?  What is your best memory of your favorite team's history?

4)  Predict the score of the Rams-Patriots game on Sunday.

5)  Tell us in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, or in a comment on Facebook.

Here's mine:

1)  My favorite NFL team is the San Diego (now Los Angeles)  Chargers.  This is logical, because I was born and raised in San Diego and have never left.  The Chargers first season in San Diego was 1961, and the team abandoned San Diego and moved back to Los Angeles in 2017 because the owner was upset that the city wouldn't provide a billion dollars to replace the existing stadium.
I'm still a fan, although I hope the owners fail.

2)  The Los Angeles Chargers were charter members of the American Football League (AFL), which started in 1959, with hotel heir Barron Hilton (son of Barron Hilton) as the majority owner.  AFL play started in 1960, and the team moved to San Diego before the 1961 season.  The AFL-NFL merger was consummated in 1966, and the Chargers joined the National Football League in 1970.  San Diego was in the 1995 Super Bowl at Miami after the 1994 season, but lost to the San Francisco 49ers.  The city of San Diego has hosted three Super Bowls - the last one in 2003. There is more history in the Wikipedia article here.

3)  My first job in the summer of 1963 was working for the San Diego Chargers at their training camp.  I wrote about it in My first real job.  I attended Charger games from 1961 through 1973 with my brother, my friends, and my wife.  Since then, we've watched it on TV.

My best memory is of the 1963 season, when my brother and I attended the AFL Championship game at Balboa Stadium in San Diego.  The Chargers beat the Boston Patriots 51-10.  That is the only league championship that the Chargers have won.

4)  My prediction for the 2019 game:  Rams 34, Patriots 30.

5)  Done!

Surname Saturday - BUCK (England to colonial Massachusetts)

It's Surname Saturday, and I'm "counting down" my Ancestral Name List each week.

I am working in the 9th great-grandmothers by Ahnentafel number, and I am up to Ancestor #2229 who is Susanna BUCK (1622-1659). [Note: the more recent ancestral families have been covered in earlier posts.]

My ancestral line back through one generation in this BUCK family line is:

1. Randall J. Seaver

2. Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983)
3. Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002)

4. Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942)
5. Alma Bessie Richmond (1882-1962)

8. Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922)
9. Hattie Louise Hildreth (1857-1920)

16. Isaac Seaver (1823-1901)
17. Lucretia Townsend Smith (1827-1884)

34.  Alpheus B. Smith (1802-1840)
35.  Elizabeth Horton Dill (1791-1869)

68.  Aaron Smith (1768-1841)
69.  Mercy Plimpton (1772-1850)

138.  Amos Plimpton (1735-1808)
139.  Mary Guild (1735-1800)

278.  Nathaniel Guild (1712-1796)
279.  Mary Boyden (1708-1776)

556.  Nathaniel Guild (1678-1774)
557.  Mehitable Hartshorn (1683-1771)

1114.  Joseph Hartshorn (1652-1727)

1115.  Sarah LNU (1654-1727)
2228.
Thomas Hartshorn, born 1614 in Reading, Berkshire, England; died before 18 May 1683 in Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.  He married about 1644 in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.
2229. Susanna Buck, born about 1622 in Kent, England; died 18 May 1659 in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.

Children of Thomas Hartshorn and Susanna Buck are:
*  Thomas Hartshorn (1646-1646).
*  Thomas Hartshorn (1648-1729), married (1) 1671 Hannah Goodwin (1650-1673); (2) 1674 Sarah Swan (1655-????).
*  John Hartshorn (1650-1737), married (1) 1672 Ruth Swan (1652-1690); (2) 1693 Abigail Brown (1675-1697); (3) 1697 Joanna LNU (1660-1708); (4) 1709 Mary Leighton (1654-1719).
Joseph Hartshorn (1652-1727), married 1676 Sarah LNU (1654-1727).
*  Benjamin Hartshorn (1654-1694), married (1) 1682 Mary Thompson (1664-1682); (2) 1684 Elizabeth Brown (1661-1748).
*  Jonathan Hartshorn (1656-1672).
*  David Hartshorn (1657-1738), married 16834 Rebecca Batchelder (1663-1743).
*  Susanna Hartshorn (1659-1718), married (1) 1683 John Devereaux (1654-1693); (2) 1695 Stephen Parker (1662-1718).

I have found no information about Susanna Buck's ancestry.  There were several Buck families in New England in the 1640 time frame, but there are no records for her ancestry to my knowledge.

I have done no original research on this family line.

Additional New York Catholic Records Available To Search This Findmypast Friday, 1 February 2019

I received this information from Findmypast today:

=============================================

Additional New York Catholic Records Available To Search This Findmypast Friday

There are over 570,000 new records and newspaper images available to search this Findmypast Friday, including:

New York Roman Catholic Parish Baptisms

Over 329,000 additional baptism records have been added to our collection of New York Roman Catholic Sacramental registers. The new additions cover nearly 60 parishes across the diocese and span the years 1787 to 1916.
The collection currently consists of transcripts taken from over 200 New York parishes. The amount of detail listed in each transcript will vary, but most will include a combination of your ancestor's date of birth, place of birth, baptism date, baptism place, the names of their parents and first language.

New York Roman Catholic Parish Marriages

Over 95,000 Sacramental register entries from 65 New York Catholic parishes have been added to the collection. Marriage records are an excellent way of adding new branches and previous generations to your family tree.
Spanning the years 1819 to 1916, these new marriage records will reveal the names, birth years, occupations, residences and parents' names of both the bride and groom as well as the date and location of their marriage.

New York Roman Catholic Parish Congregational Records

Hundreds of new records have been added to our collection of New York Roman Catholic Parish Congregational Records. The new additions cover the parishes of SS Joseph & Thomas in Richmond County (1910), St Columba in Orange County (1895 – 1915) and St Peter in Ulster County (1860).
Congregational registers incorporate sacramental records other than those pertaining to baptisms, marriages, and burials, such as communicants (those who received Holy Communion), confirmations (those who received Holy Confirmation), sick calls (those who received the Anointing of the Sick), and first confessions (those who received Holy Reconciliation). You will also find records of people who converted to Catholicism as well as those who chose to rent specific seats from their local chapel. Another register type you will discover is status animarum, Latin for 'status of the souls'. These records noted the names and addresses of all the Catholics in the area.

Lincolnshire Registers & Records

Over 500 additional images have been added to our collection of Lincolnshire registers and records.
Discover your English ancestors within the *Visitations of Religious Houses in the Diocese of Lincoln, Volume II* published in 1919 and edited by A Hamilton Thompson. The publication documents the visitation reports of monasteries by Bishop Alnwick in the 15th century. Findmypast will continue to expand this collection and add more registers and records from Lincolnshire.

British & Irish Newspapers

This week we are celebrating passing the 30 million image mark, with the addition of 143,974 new images to the collection. As well as now having over 30 million searchable pages this week, we have a bumper crop of newly updated titles (fifteen in all), covering England, Scotland and Ireland and spanning the years 1849 to 2005.
This week sees significant updates to the West Surrey Times, the Leicester Daily Post, the Gloucester Chronicle and the Huddersfield Daily Examiner. Another one of our updated titles this week is the Express and Echo, published in Exeter, to which we have added the years 1881-1900. During this time the paper was known as the Devon Evening Express, and it covers one of the most notorious murders of the nineteenth century, that of Miss Emma Ann Whitehead Keyse. The full list of recently updated titles includes:
  •         West Surrey Times - 1876, 1882-1887, 1893, 1895, 1899-1910, 1913-1914
  •         Sunday Life - 1988-1997
  •         Heywood Advertiser - 1877
  •         Lloyd's List - 1912
  •         Leicester Daily Post - 1879, 1887
  •         Buckingham Express - 1869
  •         Evening Herald (Dublin) - 2005
  •         Daily Herald - 1957
  •         Express and Echo - 1881-1888, 1890-1895, 1899-1900
  •         Belfast Telegraph - 1917
  •         Gloucestershire Chronicle - 1849-1851, 1855-1864, 1866-1870

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):
Sara Anson Vaux and Hannah Nicholas have researched the Vaux and collateral families of Somerset, and have published their work online in The Vaux Family of England, the United States, and Australia, chapters available from the authors as a PDF manuscript (see http://www.southpethertoninformation.org.uk/vaux_family_of_england_index%20page.htm)[1].

James Vaux was baptized 30 October 1704 in the South Petherton, Somerset parish church, the 8th child of William and Mary (Hare) Vaux[1,5].

He married Amy Terrell on 18 November 1729 in Crewkerne, Somerset[2].  They had eleven children, all probably born in South Petherton[1]:

*  Ann Vaux, born about 1732.
*  Mary Vaux, born about 1734, died 1 October 1810, married 4 December 1754 to John Hebritch (1730-1807).
*  William Vaux, born about 1736, buried 5 November 1737.
*  Rebecker Vaux, born about 1737, buried 15 January 1747.
*  James Vaux, born about 1740, buried 10 September 1740.
*  Jem Vaux, born about 1742, died in 1808.
*  William Vaux (born about 1745, died 7 April 1829.
*  John Vaux (baptized 27 August 1747, buried 11 July 1806, married Joanna Lavor (1763-1836) on 2 August 1785.
*  Hannah Vaux, baptized 17 April 1749, married Jacob Griffen on 11 July 1781.
*  Rebecca Vaux, baptized 31 October 1750.

James and Amy (Terrell) Vaux were innkeepers of the Bell Inn in South Petherton.  They were also committed non-conformists who participated in church life at the Old Meeting House (Presbyterian) church, where their children were probably baptized.  The deaths of some of their children are in the South Petherton parish church records[1].

James Vaux, maltster, bought land in 1745.  As early as 1733, he paid the poor rate.  On 1 October 1734, James was presented at court for "not coming to take on him the sd office" [i.e, constable].  In South Petherton, apparently non-conformists held church offices.  In 1758, James was a Churchwarden at the parish church.  A 1772 Vestry meeting of the parish church lists James Vaux in attendance.  He was literate, and signed papers with a strong hand[1].

James Vaux died 23 January 1776 in South Petherton, and his death was recorded in the South Petherton parish registers[3-4].  He may have been buried in the Old Meeting House churchyard.
