 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -
Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music):

1)  How many ancestors do you have photographs of?  What is your oldest ancestor photo (the year it was taken)?

2)  Tell us in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook.  Be sure to leave a comment with a link to your blog post on this post.

Here's mine (see pedigree chart at

*  Parents (Seaver-Carringer, married 1942) - have lots of photos of them - young, middle-age, older.  I have wedding photos.

*  Paternal grandparents (Seaver-Richmond, married 1900) - have some photos, including a wedding photo.  Have no photo of entire family.

*  Maternal grandparents (Carringer-Auble, married 1918) - have many childhood and young adult photos of my grandfather, Lyle Carringer, but few childhood photos of my grandmother, Emily Auble.

*  Great-grandparents (Seaver-Hildreth, married 1876) - have no good photo of Frank Seaver, have one good photo of Hattie Hildreth.

*  Great-grandparents (Richmond-White, married 1868) - have several family photos of them as adults with their children.

*  Great-grandparents (Carringer-Smith, married 1887) - have many photos of them as adults, including a wedding photo.

*  Great-grandparents (Auble-Kemp, married 1898) - have photos of them around 1898 when they married, but few photos after that.

*  Great-great-grandparents (Seaver-Smith, married 1851) have no family photos, but do have a small 1860's Union Cased ambrotype of them as individuals.

*  Great-great-grandparents (Hildreth-Newton, married 1852) - have no photo for Edward Hildreth, have only a family photograph of Sophia (Newton) Hildreth.

)*  Great-great-grandparents (Richmond-Rich, married 1845) - have one family photos of their family.

*  Great-great-grandparents (White-Oatley, married 1848) - have no photos of them or their family.

*  Great-great-grandparents (Carringer-Spangler, married 1851) - have only a family photo of them in about 1900 in front of their home.

*  Great-great-grandparents (Smith - Vaux, married 1861) - have photographs of each parent, and 1870 time photos of them as a couple and of their children.

*  Great-great-grandparents (Auble - Knapp, married 1844) - have no photos of them or their family.

*  Great-great-grandparents (Kemp-Sovereen, married 1861) - have no photos of them or their family.

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Findmypast Friday: New Birth, Death and Apprentice Records

I received this from Findmypast today:

Search new and exclusive birth, death and apprentice records this Findmypast Friday

Scotland, Edinburgh Apprentices 1583-1800

This fascinating collection is now fully searchable. Search over 29,000 transcripts to discover apprentices of all trades and uncover details of their work, training, masters and even their father’s name.

Apprenticeship records reveal details about your ancestors’ lives and careers you won’t find elsewhere. Young apprentices from all over Scotland have travelled to Edinburgh over the centuries to learn their craft and, for those that exist on record, these documents are great way to find the place of origin of those who move to the city and later set down roots.

British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Deaths

We’ve added thousands of new records from The National Archives and the General Register Office to these two important collections.

British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms will enable you to discover the details of children born overseas and at sea including children born to those working within the armed forces, merchant navy, and consular forces, as well as, civilian ship passengers.

British Armed Forces and Overseas Deaths and Burials documents members of the British armed forces who died while serving their country overseas, British civilians who died while travelling or working overseas, and individuals, including seamen, who died at sea.

Once fascinating new title has been added to Findmypast’s ever-expanding newspaper collection this week. The Keys 1933-1939, published in July 1933, was the ‘Official Organ of the League of Coloured Peoples’ and aimed to address the ‘racial misunderstanding’ that was prevalent in society, both in Britain and beyond.

Additional pages have also been added to following six titles;

Disclosure: I have a complimentary subscription to Findmypast, and have accepted meals and services from Findmypast, as a Findmypast Ambassador. This has not affected my objectivity relative to Findmypast and its products.
