Check Out the FamilySearch Famous Relatives Feature

 If you are in the FamilySearch Family Tree, then FamilySearch may have some surprising Famous Relatives for you.  They are in groups of Leaders, Inventors and Scientists, Entertainers and Artists, Trailblazers, and Athletes.

Here are  mine (a total of 94):

It looks like they haven't attached images for some of these famous relatives of mine.

Clicking on the images on the page shows you your relationship to the person.  Here is mine with George Washington (supposedly my 2nd cousin 8 times removed):

In FamilySearch Family Tree, where George Washington (1732-1799) has about 10 different profiles, here is the top of the Relationship chart for one of the profiles that I think is probably correct:

It looks like someone has attached my 8th great-grandfather Henry Bennett (1664-1739) of Ipswich, Massachusetts (all his life!) to a John Bennett (1624-1688, born in England, died in Virginia, all other children born in Virginia).  So, I guess I (or someone) will have to disconnect Henry Bennet (1664-1739) from his relationship to John Bennett and his wife and connect him to Henry Bennett (1629-1709) and Lydia Perkins, who both died in Massachusetts.

Do I believe that all of these relationships are correct - that I am actually related to all of these famous people?  It all depends on the accuracy of the information input to the FamilySearch Family Tree by users of the tree - the names, dates, places and relationships.  In the first case I looked at above, the answer is NO, I don't think that ALL of the relatinoships are correct.  A researcher has to look at these with a critical eye.

I also disagree with  my supposed relationship with James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison, Martin Van Buren and several other "famous ancestors."

Some of the relationships may be correct, but I have not researched my line back that far - for instance, "Princess Diana" Spencer (1961-1997) goes back to Philip Stanhope (1584-????) and Katherine Hastings (1585-1636), but I haven't connected my John Haughtron (1650-1705) to a mother yet.

This is "genealogy fun" which I enjoy, but a researcher needs to verify every relationship.

=======================================================
My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Relatives at RootsTech 2024 Is Still Available Until 31 March

One of the ongoing features that I use and enjoy from every RootsTech is the Relatives at RootsTech app.  This app takes the registered RootsTech.org users and looks at their family trees, and compares it to my family tree.  If they find a common ancestor, they add that registered user to the Relatives at RootsTech page for me.  The FamilySearch Family Tree is used to generate the relationships.

Here is my current (22 March, 1:45 p.m.) Relatives at RootsTech count:

I have 82,296 Relatives at RootsTech, from 1st cousins once removed to 9th cousins.  The app provides lists by relationship (but only 300 at a time), by Ancestor, and by Family Line.  I can also search for any other FamilySearch registered user who might be on the list if I choose to (I do have to know their FamilySearch user name).

I clicked on one of my "new" 6th cousins, and saw the line from our common ancestors to me (on the left) and to my Relative (on the right) - I truncated it to hide the living people:

The top 300 Relatives on my Relatives list are all 6th cousin or closer.  66,701 of my Relatives are living in the United States.  Canada is #2 with 1,695 Relatives.  United Kingdom is #3 wih 105 Relatives.  One relative is living on Wallis and Fortuna in the Pacific Ocean.  I have 64,298 relatives of my father, and 34,123 relatives of my mother.  My ancestors with the most Relatives are 5th great-grandparents Nathaniel and Sarah (Pray) Horton with 30 Relatives.

This is very useful as a discussion starter on Facebook - you never know who might be your relative, and this will help.

I check out every 6th cousin or closer relationship, because these may be DNA matches from my 5th great-grandparents or closer.  If the line from the common ancestor to the Relative is complete, I add the historical persons in the line to my RootsMagic tree IF the line has sources that can be verified for birth, marriage, death and relationships.  The Relative at RootsTech gets a "Relatives at RootsTech" group designation in RootsMagic.

This year, I've added about 30 lines to my RootsMagic tree.

If you have not registered for RootsTech 2024 yet, and you want to watch the available online genelaogy and family history classes and Expo Hall exhibitor information, go to RootsTech.org and register with your FamilySearch ID.  It is FREE to do so.  The online classes will be available to watch for several years.  This is an excellent learning resource for beginners and casual users.

NOTE:  The Relatives at RootsTech app will go offline on 31 March 2024 until it returns in early 2025 ready for RootsTech 2025.

==============================================

Disclosure:  I am a RootsTech 2024 "Influencer" but will receive no remuneration for my support or posting of RootsTech information.  I will be an online participant this year because of my health problems.

52 Relatives: Ann Richman (1851-1853) of Hilperton Marsh, Wiltshire

 I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents - see the list in 52 Ancestors Biographies.

I started a new weekly series called "52 Relatives" to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches with events and source citations.  They lived and died, and deserve a sketch also - they were integral parts of the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

                                               =================================

Ann Richman was born before 16 November 1851 in Hilperton Marsh, Wiltshire, the first daughter and third child (of nine) of James and Hannah (Rich) Richman of Hilperton Marsh.[1]  She was baptized in the Staverton St. Paul's parish church of the Church of England on 16 November 1851.[1]

Ann was certainly named for her mother (Ann (Marshman) Richman) and her grandmother (Ann (Angel) Marshman).

Ann died at the age of one year and five months before 27 April 1853 in Hilperton Marsh.[2]  She was buried in the Staverton St. Paul's parish church.[2]

During this time, the James Richman family resided in Hilperton Marsh, which is closer to the Staverton parish church than the Hilperton parish church.

Ann Richman (1851-1853) was my great-grand-aunt, the sister of my paternal great-grandfather, Thomas Richman/Richmond (1848-1917).
