Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - How Many Generations Did Your Parents or Grandparents Know?

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1)  Miriam Robbins wrote a wonderful post today about her grandson playing with a toy first used by Miriam's great-grandfather - see Seven Generations for the details.

2)  So how many generations of family did you know, or your parents, or your grandparents, know?  Ancestors and descendants.

3)  Tell us in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a comment on this post with a link with your response.

Here's mine:

a)  My father, Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983), knew:

*  His great-grandmother, Sophia (Newton) Hildreth (1834-1923).
*  His grandmother, Harriet (Hildreth) Seaver (1857-1920)
*  His father, Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942)
*  His siblings (born 1901-1917).
*  His three sons (born 1943-1955)
*  His four grandchildren (born 1974-1978)

b)  My mother, Betty Virginia (Carringer) Seaver (1919-2002), knew:

*  Her great-grandmother, Abigail (Vaux) Smith (1844-1931)
*  Her grandmother, Della (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944)
*  Her father, Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976)
*  Her self (no siblings)
*  Her three sons (born 1943-1955).
*  Her four grandchildren (born 1974, 1976, 1976 and 1978)
*  One of her great-grandchildren (born 1997; the others born after she died)

c)  My paternal grandfather, Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942), knew:

*  His great-grandmother, Sophia (Buck) (Newton) Stone (1797-1882)
*  His grandmother, Sophia (Newton) Hildreth (1834-1923).
*  His mother, Harriet (Hildreth) Seaver (1857-1920)
*  His siblings (born 1878)
*  His six children (born 1901-1917)
*  Some of his grandchildren (born 1926-1955)

d)  My paternal grandmother, Alma Bessie (Richmond) Seaver (1882-1962), knew:

*  Her grandfather, James Richmond (1821-1912)
*  Her father, Thomas Richmond (1848-1917)
*  Her siblings.
*  Her six children (born between 1901 and 1917).
*  All 11 of her grandchildren (born between 1926 and 1955).
*  Some of her 20 great-grandchildren (born 1947-1978).

e)  My maternal grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976), knew:

*  His grandfather, David Jackson Carringer (1828-1902)
*  His father, Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946)
*  His self (no siblings)
*  His child (born in 1919).
*  His 3 grandchildren (born in 1943-1955).
*  Two of his 4 great-grandchildren (born 1974-1978)

f)  My maternal grandmother, Emily Kemp Auble (1899-1977), knew:

*  Her father, Charles Auble (1849-1916)
*  Her self (no siblings)
*  Her child (born in 1919)
*  Her 3 grandchildren (born in 1943-1955).
*  Three of her 4 great-grandchildren (born 1974-1978)

g)  Me (born 1943)

*  My great-grandfather, Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946)
*  My grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976)
*  My mother, Betty Virginia (Carringer) Seaver (1919-2002)
*  My siblings.
*  My two children (born 1974-1976)
*  My five grandchildren (born 2003-2014).

Emily did have two grandparents live past her birth date in 1899, but they resided in Ontario and Illinois, and I doubt that she met them.

So the most seems to be SEVEN - my mother "knew" seven generations.  Myself, my father and three of my grandparents knew six, and one grandparent knew five.   There is hope that I will meet my great-grandchildren.

Obviously, you have to live a long time to know your great-grandchildren, and have a great-grandparent who lived past your own birth to get to seven.  It will be interesting if anyone comes up with eight.

Thank you, Miriam, for the challenging question.

The Grandgirls Go to the Padres Game in April 2014 -- Post 506 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here are some family photos from April of 2014 - we took the grandgirls (ages 9 and almost 6 then) to the San Diego Padres home game at Petco Park in mid-April 2014:

1)  The girls made signs in an attempt to get on the video board.  Here is Audrey with her sign:

2)  And Lauren with her sign:

3)  They always want goodies to eat in the seats.  Here are Audrey, Lauren and Linda in Section 310, Row 4 eating cotton candy:

4)  When an inning was over, they would grab their signs, jump up and down, wave the signs and cheer on the team:

It worked.  They got on the video screen once between innings.  They were really stoked.  I didn't get a photo of the video board, of course.

More Seaver family photos next week!

More Fun at the Safari Park in April 2014 -- Post 505 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here are some family photos from April of 2014 - we took the grandgirls (ages 9 and almost 6 then) to the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park out east of Escondido in April 2014:

1)  The girls posed on one of the walkways above the flora and fauna, with the tethered balloon ride in the background:

2)  The girls posed on a large shell structure:

3)  On the merry-go-round:

4)  They bought a souvenir to remember their day:

Butterflies at the Safari Park in April 2014 -- Post 504 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here are some family photos from April of 2014 -- we took the grandgirls to the San Diego Safari Park, east of Escondido, and visited the butterfly exhibit:

1)  Here's a large butterfly on the tip of Audrey's finger:

2)  Another butterfly on Lauren's hand:

3)  Linda has a butterfly on her elbow and Lauren still has hers on her hand:

4)  My hand got in this picture somehow, with two butterflies holding on:

The girls and Linda wore brightly colored and flowery blouses, which helped attract the butterflies.

The Grandgirls at Play in 2014 -- Post 501 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here are some family photos from March of 2014 - we had the grandgirls for a weekend and they love to take photos and have them taken:

1)  Here's Audrey (at age 6) taking a photo of me in her bedroom:

2)  Here's Lauren (age 10) wearing one of my shirts:

3)  Audrey wanted to try on my eye glasses when we were out to dinner - she looks real studious, doesn't she?

4)  Lauren tried on Linda's eye glasses when we were out to dinner at Lolita's - pensive and speechless for about five seconds:

At the Water Park in December 2012 - -- Post 497 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here is a photograph from the Seaver family albums:

Over the Christmas holiday in December 2012, we went to a water park in Riverside County for the day.  The sun was out, the sky was clear, the air was warm, and the water was relatively warm, and we had a great time floating in the stream and going down the water slides.  It was a good family history day!

We often have days like this at Christmas time in San Diego and Southern California - it was about the same the last week in 2017.  But we didn't go to the water park this year.

Our daughter took this photo of Linda with granddaughter Lauren (age 7) on her lap, and me with granddaughter Audrey (age 4) on my shoulder.

Randy with his Granddaughters in 2012 -- Post 496 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here is a photograph from the Seaver family albums:

I think this was from December 2012, perhaps at a restaurant or a mall.   With me are my adorable granddaughters, Lauren (then 7) and Audrey (then 4), two of my seven descendants.

I think my daughter Tami, the mother of the girls, took this photograph.

Monday Genea-pourri

After searching for two hours to find a topic for today's afternoon blog post, I decided on this:

1)  We had Linda's brother Paul, and his wife Debra, down from the Bay Area from Wednesday until Saturday for a visit, and it went well.  We went out to dinner three times and to the beach for lunch, and up to see our daughter's family in Huntington Beach on Friday.  We shared lots of family stories and made a few more family history memories.

Brother Paul just got his 23andMe DNA tests back, and wondered how to understand them.  So we looked at Linda's test results, and saw a number of known cousins on the Match list, but Paul wasn't on the list.  He should have been, and I didn't know why he wasn't.  Today, Paul is on the list, and shares 48.2% of his DNA with his sister.  I guess they just added his results over the weekend.  Whew - had me worried for awhile!!

While we looked at the DNA matches, Paul wondered about some of the cousins, not knowing exactly who they were.  I opened RootsMagic and my Ancestry tree, and showed him. He was amazed at how easy it was to find persons, to see relationships, to add information, and to get Hints.  I invited him to share my Ancestry Member Tree.

2)  Sunday was a day of genealogy rest.  After church, I watched the second half of the Chargers game, took a nap, worked on the Amanuensis post, and watched the 5th World Series game.

While working on the Amanuensis post, I wondered why John Plimpton was not found in a search of the Massachusetts Wills and Probates database on Ancestry.  It turned out that his records are in the database, but are not indexed.  I found 9 pages of Suffolk County [Mass.] probate records for him on FamilySearch, and they are all on Ancestry.com in the collection, but none of them are indexed.  That's because Ancestry didn't index every record in the collection.  The indexing in Probate Court Clerk volumes is spotty at best on Ancestry - researcher beware!  You can use the collection, but it is best if you use the Probate Index and Probate Docket books first.

3)  I attended this morning's Mondays With Myrt Hangout and was able to contribute a bit on the Federal Land Records, Massachusetts land records, and the scrapbook/autograph book conversations.  I wore my Genea-Santa hat as my Hallowe'en costume.

4)  This afternoon I had a "Genealogy - Be An Ancestor Detective" presentation at the Serra Mesa library in San Diego at 1:30 p.m., sponsored by OASIS (A senior adult education center).  This is a Beginning "how-to" and encouragement talk - about one third of the attendees had done some collecting and a few had done some research online.  There were 24 at this free talk and discussion, and there were plenty of good questions about DNA, immigration, probate records, and more.   After the event, one lady came up and showed me a large (like 24 x 18) book with blueprinted family group sheets, maps, and a pedigree chart from the 1930s.  The blueprint printing was hard to read.

That's what I've been up to for the past six days - what about you?

2013 Visit to Nature Discovery Center -- Post 483 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

In December 2013, we visited the local Nature Discovery Center here in Chula Vista with my daughter and her two daughters (ages 9 and 5 in 2013).  Here are some photos from the visit:

1)  The girls posed before a dolphin "Lifeguard" statue:

2)  Starfish, urchins, sea cucumbers and other colorful ocean creatures on display:

3)  The big hit is always trying to touch the manta rays swimming in a shallow pool:

4)  There was a static penguin display:

Christmas 2013 is coming, and I think I passed over a Legacy cruise and the NGS 2013 conference, so I'll go back and pick those up in the next few weeks.

More San Diego Zoo Fun in May 2013 - Post 478 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

We had the two granddaughters (ages 5 and 8 at the time) in May 2013 for a weekend, and we visited the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park.  Here are some photos from our visit:

1)  Lauren got her face painted in the new Down Under exhibit at the zoo:

2)  Linda did too:

3)  The girls climbed a bit in the Outback area on a eucalyptus tree:

4)  Walking along on the way out, we spotted a cheetah in a tree and the girls posed in front of it:

The girls love the zoo, but it has gotten difficult to walk around for the grandparents.

2012 Opening Day for the Padres -- Post 455 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

This week's photos are from the Thursday, 5 April 2012 Opening Day of the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in downtown San Diego.

1)  The teams are along the sidelines, and the sailors are in the outfield before they display the large American Flag:

2)  The flag is unfurled and supported off the ground by all the sailors on the field, and the Star Spangled Banner played:

3)  And then the fireworks along the upper deck and on the field go off:

Linda and I have had 20 game season's tickets since 1998, the last World Series year for the Padres.  We currently sit in the handicap section in Section 306 in the upper deck on the third base side.  We look right down the first base line.

Celebrating Our 42nd Anniversary -- Post 454 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

We visited our daughter Lori and her two boys, Lucas and Logan, in the Santa Cruz Mountains in March 2012.  The highlight was a special anniversary dinner prepared by Chef Lori and served by two handsome waiters, Lucas and Logan (who were 8 and 6 at the time).

1)  The menu:

2)  The pre-dinner cocktail:

3)  The waiters before the service, note the candles:

4)  The main course:

5)  The dessert:

6)  Grandma and Logan:

This was a lot of fun.  The boys took it seriously and tried so hard to be efficient and prompt and with a smile almost the whole time.

We loved it!  I wonder if they remember it?  Maybe they'll see this post.

The Grandgirls at Disneyland in 2012 -- Post 453 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

We all went to Disneyland in February 2012 to celebrate Lauren's 6th birthday.  This was the "princess" year - both grandgirls had princess dresses and we all went to the luncheon with the princesses.  Audrey was almost 4 at this time.

Here are some of the photos that turned out well (I've forgotten the names of the princesses):

1)  Lauren and Audrey with Mickey Mouse:

2)  Posing at the Princess lunch:

3)  Another princess during lunch:

 4)  There were about 7 princesses as I recall - the girls knew their names and loved them all:

5)  The birthday girl gets her cake:

6)  I guess we all got 3D glasses sometime during the day:

We had a grand time.  The kids now live close to Disneyland and go frequently for the day.  We haven't been for two or three years.
