Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your First Presidential Election

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans: 

 It's Saturday Night again - 

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1)  The 2016 Presidential election is this coming Tuesday.  When did you vote in your first Presidential election and, if you choose, who did you vote for?  What about your parents?  When did they first vote?

2)  Share your responses in comments to this blog post, or in your own blog post, or on Facebook or Google+.  Please leave a link in Comments if you write your own blogp ost.

Here's mine:

a)  I was born in October 1943, so I was excited to cast my first vote in November 1964 for Barry Goldwater.  I was excited about the new conservative movement, and really didn't like Lyndon Johnson.  I registered as a Republican in 1964, and registered as a Democrat in 1972 after Watergate.  

b)  My parents were staunch Republicans from the time of their marriage.  My mother was age 21 in 1940 and a college student, but I think she voted for Franklin Roosevelt.  I'm pretty sure she voted for every Republican candidate after that.  My father was age 21 in 1932, but I doubt that he voted until 1948 after his marriage and World War II.  I doubt that he voted in 1944 as he was in the U.S. Navy.   I'm pretty sure he voted Republican from 1948 through 1980, and he died in 1983.  

c)  The California Voter Registrations are online on Ancestry.com - I need to review them to see how my grandparents and great-grandparents registered.

Thomas Eldred and 5965. Anna Watson.  He married 25 November 1640 in St. Mary's at the Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.
2983.  Elizabeth Miller, born about 1624 in Needham Market, Suffolk, England; died 1711 in Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island, United States.

Over 2.8 million additional records are available to search this Findmypast Friday, including:

United States Marriages

Over 2.7 million additional records have been added to our collection of United States Marriages. The new additions come from 13 different states and include significant updates from Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Rhode Island.

The records include transcripts and images of the original documents that list marriage date, the names of the bride and groom, birthplace, birth date, age and residence as well as fathers' and mothers' names.

Duty Locations, Naval Group China, World War II, 1942-1945

Explore more than 33,000 records containing the details of military personnel who served overseas with the United States' Naval Group China, the US Navy's intelligence unit in China during World War II. The records consist of muster roll reports created by the Department of the Navy, U.S. Naval Group China (NGC) to record locations and changes made to ranks and rates of pay for naval personnel.

The records contained in this collection relate to those persons attached to the NGC and provide names, ranks or rates of pay, branches of service, muster roll dates of reporting or detachment, and duty locations approximately every two weeks. As such, naval officers and sailors may appear multiple times in the records, tracking changes in an individual's location, unit, rank or rate of pay over the course of the war.

1840 U.S. Census, Revolutionary War Veterans

1840 U.S. Census, Revolutionary War Veterans contains over 21,000 records of ex-servicemen and their next of kin who were receiving pensions in 1840 for service in the Revolutionary War.

On the back of the population schedules for the 1840 census, enumerators recorded the living pensioners of the Revolutionary War as well as other military service. The lists also noted an individual's age and the name of the head of household in which the individual lived.

Ireland, Royal Hibernian Military School History

Explore this 168 page document to uncover the history of the Royal Hibernian Military School in Dublin. This fascinating publication includes transcriptions from memorial inscriptions, a roll of honour from the First World War, and transcripts from both the 1901 and 1911 census.

The Royal Hibernian Military School was founded in 1765 in Phoenix Park, Dublin. Today, it is the site of St Mary's Hospital. When the school closed in 1924, all the registers and minute books were taken to Walworth, London. However, during the Second World War, these documents were destroyed in the Blitz. The Ireland, Royal Hibernian Military school history provides a valuable substitute for the records that were lost.

Information about this family was obtained from the book by Samuel Small, Jr., titled Genealogical Records of George Small, Philip Albright, Johann Daniel Dunckel, William Geddes Latimer, Thomas Bartow, John Reid, Daniel Denezet, Jean Crommelin, Joel Richardson (Philadelphia, Penn. :  J.B. Lippincott Company, 1905)[1].

Johann Daniel Dunckel (or Dinckel) was a nobleman of Strasbourg, Alsace (now in Germany).  The Dunckel Coat of Arms represents three heads and sheaves of wheat on a shield, with a coat of armor above, surmounted by three heads and sheaves of wheat[1].

He married Maria Ursula Von Ernest in about 1735, probably in Strasbourg.  They had six children between 1736 and 1748, probably all born in Strasbourg[1].

  

At the baptism of their son, Peter Dinkel, the King and Queen of Prussia were sponsors.  The baptismal cloth, a square piece of silk velvet with tassels, used on that occasion, was afterwards used in the baptism of Maria Ursula's grandchildren[1].

After their emigration to America in about 1750, Johann Daniel, Maria Ursula and their children settled in York, Pennsylvania[1].  

 Johann Daniel Dunckel died after 6 April 1754 when his will was written, and before 7 November 1755 when his will was recorded.  The location of the remains of Johann Daniel Dunckel are unknown, but they are probably in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church yard in York, Pennsylvania[1].

The will of (Johann) Daniel Dinkel reads (translation obtained from Small's book):

"In the name of  God Amen the sixth day of Aprill in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty four I, Daniel Dinkel in the town and county of York and province of Pennsilvania Yoeman being at present well & healthy in body & of perfect mind and memory thansk be given unto God therefore calling unto Mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all man once to Dye, do make and ordain this my last will and testament.  That is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my body I recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christianlike and decent manner at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form viz:

"Imprimis, It is my will and I do order that in the first place all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied.  I give and bequeath unto Mary Ursula Dinkel my dearly beloved wife my Feader Bed and Bead stead and all what belongs thereunto for her own for ever; like wise all her apparel and all my whole Estate Real and movable during her life Time; but if it should happen that she should marry again to another Husband, then it shall be divided one half of my said Real and movable Estate, one half to her and the other half to my six Children, which Half shall be equally divided amongst them, Namely Daniel Dinkel and Peter Dinkel and Margaretha Salome Dinkel, Anna Mary Dinkel, Mary Catherine Dinkel and Mary Dorothea Dinkel and not before she intend to marry again, and as for the other half, it is to be in her possession during her life Time, and if she should get children with the other Husband then the said half of her shall after her decease be Equally divided among the afore named six children, but if she should dye without children by the next husband then it shall fall to (them that she get by the other husband) my said six Children be equally divided amongst them as aforesaid.

"Lastly, I constitute, nominate and appoint my dearly beloved wife Mary Ursula Dinkel and my trusty friends George Son and George Christian Sinn to be my only and sole Executors of this my last Will and testament.  And I do hereby utterly disallow Revoke and Disannul all and every formar Testaments, Wills, legacies and Exec-rs by me in any ways before this time named Willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and testament.

"In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal dated the day and year first above written.

"Daniel Dinkel"  (seal)

"Witnesses:  Jacob Billmyer, Jacob Fackler, Barthl. Maul.

The will was probated on 7 November 1755[3-4].

An extensive inventory of the goods of Johan Daniel Dinkel deceased was taken in December 1755 by Jacob Billmyer and Jacob Fackler (qualified 29 December 1755).  The inventory totaled 52 pounds, 7 shillings, 6 pence[3].

At a session of the Orphans' court held 29 March 1759, the widow petitioned[3]:

"Maria Urshula Hermsdorf late the widow of Johan Daniel Dinkle late of York Town deceased, Came into Court and prayed that Johan Peter Dinkle a minor orphan son of the aforesaid Johan Daniel Dinkle aged seventeen years the seventeenth day of June last may be bound an apprentice to Johannes Sputter of York Town Sadler.  It is considered by the Court and the said Johan Peter Dinkle is hereby bound an apprentice to the said Johannes Sputter until he shall be aged twenty one years.  In consideration whereof the said Johannes Sputter doth covenant and agree to teach or cause to be taught to the said apprentice the Art or Mystery of a sadler which he now practiseth and to furnish and allow the said apprentice sufficient Meat, drink, apparel, washing and lodging during ther said term and at the expiration thereof to pay unto him two suits of apparel one whereof shall be new and of the value of nine pounds or nine pounds in Money which the said apprentice shall there choose."

Seavers in the News - Who were Edward E. Seaver's Parents?

I found an obituary for Edward E. Seaver, who died on 15 May 1949 in Watertown, New York, in the Syracuse [N.Y.] Herald Journal newspaper on Ancestry.com.

1)  The obituary says:

"Edward E. Seaver, Watertown, Dies

"WATERTOWN -- Edward E. Seaver, 66 of 147 Charles st., died yesterday at Mercy Hospital where he had been a patient for one week with a heart ailment.  He was a mechanical draftsman and toolmaker.  His wife, the former Miss Mabel Curry, is among the survivors.

"The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. from the Church of the Redeemer, with burial at North Watertown Cemetery."

The obituary provides a name, a death date, a death place, a wife's maiden name, and the burial location.

2)  I looked in my RootsMagic database, thinking I surely had information about this Seaver person.  Nope.  I don't have him in my database.  Who were his parents?

So I went searching on Ancestry.com and found:

a)  A Find A Grave memorial:

This is obviously the same person, and provides a bit more information:

"Edward Seaver, a native of Watertown was married on Oct. 4, 1904, in Trinity Episcopal Church.

"They lived here while Mr. Seaver worked at J. B. Wise, Inc. and Eager Electric Company.

"Moving to Rochester in 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Seaver both worked at Eastman Kodak nearly 25 years.

"They returned to Watertown in 1947 and purchased the Charles street house.

"Mr. Seaver died May 15, 1949, aged 66."

In the Find A Grave memorial, he is linked to his wife, Mabel Curry Seaver but not to parents, siblings or children.

b)  I found Edward and Mabel Seaver in the 1910 U.S. Census at 834 Cooper Street in Watertown, New York; in the 1920 U.S. census, they resided in Rochester, New York;  in the 1930 U.S. Census, Edward E. Seaver (age 48, born N.Y.) resided in Watertown, listed as son to head of household Sarah Henderson.

c)  There are records for Edward Everett Seaver, born 22 November 1882  in the World War I Draft Registrations in 1918, the World War II Draft Registrations in 1942, and the U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007.

3)  The 1930 U.S. Census provides the key clue, along with another newspaper article, which I reported on in "A Terrible Accident" (posted 21 April 2008).  In this article, Edward E. Seaver (1859-1882) is reported dead by a swing saw accident in a wood mill on 8 May 1882.  He had married Sarah Heintzelman on 2 January 1882 according to my database.  The article says that the widow was "enciente" meaning "carrying an unborn child."  Could the Edward Everett Seaver who died 15 May 1949 (the Syracuse article above) be the son of Edward E. and Sarah (Heintzelman) Seaver?  

4)  With that hypothesis, I wondered what happened to Sarah (Heintzelman) Seaver, who was a widow at age 20.  In the 1900 United States census, the Wm. H. Henderson household in Watertown, New York, included Sarah Henderson (born Sep 1863, age 36, married 14 years).  The oldest child in the household is Edward Henderson (step-son, born Nov 1882, age 17, born N.Y., parents born N.Y.). 

5)  I think that I have evidence that the 17-year old Edward Henderson in the 1900 U.S. Census is Edward Everett Seaver (1882-1949), the son of Edward E. Seaver (1859-1882) and Sarah (Heintzelman) Seaver (who married William Henderson in about 1886).  He married Mabel Curry in 1904, and had no children enumerated in the census records.

I still have more research to do on this Edward Everett Seaver, and his mother, but I think I have sufficient evidence to add him as a child to Edward and Sarah (Heintzelman) Seaver of Watertown, New York.

6)  It's amazing how much information we have on the Internet today.  I started this blog post about 90 minutes ago when I found the newspaper article at the top of the post, and wondered who his parents were.  Over the next hour, I was able to find all of the records noted above.  The key was the earlier blog article I wrote back in 2008 - I searched Genea-Musings for Edward Seaver and Watertown and found the earlier blog post.  Serendipity?  Good luck?  A decent family tree database?
