Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Father's Mother's Patrilineal Line

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -
time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1)
What was your father's mother's name?

2) What is your father's mother's patrilineal line? That is, her father's father's father's ... back to the most distant male ancestor in that line?

3) Can you identify male sibling(s) of your father's mother, and any living male descendants from those male sibling(s)? If so, you have a candidate to do a Y-DNA test on that  patrilineal line. If not, you may have to find male siblings, and their descendants, of the next generation back, or even further.

4)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, or in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook or Google Plus post.

Here's mine:

1)  My father's mother was Alma Bessie (Richmond) Seaver (1882-1962).  She was born in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut to Thomas Richmond (1848-1917) and Julia (White) Richmond (1848-1913).

2)  Alma Bessie's patrilineal line was:

*  Thomas Richmond (1848-1917), who married Julia E. White (1848-1913)

*  James Richman (1821-1912), married Hannah Rich (1824-1911)

*  John Richman (1788-1867), married Ann Marshman (1784-1856).

3)  Alma Bessie Richmond had five brothers:

*  Frederick J. Richmond (1870-1875), so he had no offspring.

*  Everett Glens Richmond (1875-1917), married Ida May Fiske (1878-1942), and they had a daughter Juliet and a son Everett Richmond (1913-1977).  I don't know if Everett married or had children - this is one to follow up on!

*  Charles Percival Richmond (1880-1910), married Jessie Louise Brown (1882-1947), and they had one son, William B. Richmond (1909-2003).  He married, but they had no children.

*  Edwin Thomas Richmond (1883-1935), married Alice Bertha Corey (1884-1979).  They had one daughter, Helen Corey Richmond (1907-2001).

*  James Henry Richmond (1886-1913), married Ethel Rosetta Judson (1890-1966).  They had one daughter, Anna Richmond.

So from Bessie's brothers, there is only one real Richmond Y-DNA candidate!

Thomas Richmond (1848-1917) had three brothers from the James and Hannah (Rich) Richman family:

*  James Richmond (1849-1929), married Sarah Bigwood (1855-1932).  They had four sons, Oscar James Richmond (1881-1942) - no known children, another avenue for research, Chester Arthur Richmond (1883-1960) - one son, now deceased, with four sons; Edgar Valentine Richmond (1886-1943) - one son, with two sons (one of whom I've corresponded with); Leon Henry Richmond (1888-1953) - with one son, who has two sons.

*  John Henry Richmond (1865-1947), who married Mary Ann Ramset (1866-1954).  They had one son, Thomas H. M. Richmond (1902-1987), who had three sons, one of whom I've met, now deceased.  This is another potential research area.

*  Charles Edwin Richmond (1866-1951), married Lavinia Guerten (1870-1936).  They had three sons, Charles Lloyd Richmond (1898-1968) - who had one son who had one son who had one son;  Louis A. Richmond (1902-1962) - married but I don't know of children; Ralph Albert Richmond (1908-1958) - married, two known daughters, no known sons.

There are more research opportunities through these Richmond males.  I already have one known autosomal DNA match and contact through one of them.

4)  I just did!  And will.

Why go through this?  My main reason is to identify potential Y-DNA donors to obtain the Y-DNA signature of the Richmond line.  It may be a way to connect John Richmond (1788-1867) to a set of parents.

These male Richmonds are my uncles, and first, second or third cousins, and therefore we share a significant amount of autosomal DNA.  Perhaps I can identify which of my SNPs came from the Richmondl ine.

Lastly, they provide research targets to identify more descendants of my Richman ancestors.  You never know what you might find!

4)  NOTES  (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

 Alpheus B. Smith was born in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts on 19 May 1802[1], the son of Aaron and Mercy (Plimpton) Smith.

William S. Tilden edited the book "History of the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886" published by Geo. H. Ellis, Boston, Mass., 1887.  The family genealogy section of the book provides this summary:

"Alpheus B. Smith married in 1826 Eliza Dill of Eastham, and the same year he bought the place on High Street near the South School-house.  He died in 1840, his wife in 1869."

On 14 August 1826, Alpheus B. Smith, yeoman of Medfield, sold land to Lois Smith in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts for 25 dollars.[2]  The land was in the southerly part of Medfield containing one acre bounded southeasterly on Walpole and Wrentham road and on all other parts on land of Charles Hammond it being the place formerly occupied by George Turner.

Alpheus B. Smith of Medfield married Elizabeth Dill of Dedham on 30 November 1826.  The record in the Dedham town records says:[14-17]

"Nov. 30 [1826]  Alpheus B. Smith of Medfield & Elizabeth Dill of Dedham."

In the 1830 US Census, the Alpheus Smith family resided in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[7] The household included:

*   one male aged 20 to 29,
*  one female under age 5,
*  one female aged 20 to 29,
*  one female aged 80 to 89

On 21 June 1834, Alpheus B. Smith, yeoman of Medfield, sold land to Simeon Richardson, cooper of Medfield, in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[3]  The land was in the southerly part of Medfield containing twenty acres with a dwelling house, barn and other buildings, bounded westerly on the road leading to Walpole southerly on land of Asa Hamant, easterly on land of David Smith, and northerly in part on land of the heirs of Eliakim Morse deceased, and in part on land of the heirs of Elias Mann deceased, and in part on land of Elisha Clark, being the homestead of the said Smith.

Alpheus B. Smith died on 13 January 1840 in Medfield, leaving a widow (Elizabeth Horton (Dill) Smith) and two minor children (Lucretia Townsend Smith and James Alpheus Smith).  The death record in the Medfield vital records book says:[4]

"SMITH, Alpheus B., Jan. 13, 1840, a. 36"

The probate file of Alpheus B. Smith (1798-1840) of Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.  The papers are in Probate Packet No. 16,776 in the Norfolk County [Mass.] Probate Court records.  The Probate Docket Book (on FHL Microfilm 1,509,414) for this particular packet lists the following records in the probate packet (with volume and page numbers from the Probate Court Clerk's registers):

The estate was intestate.  Hinsdale Fisher was appointed administrator of the estate.[6]  The widow's dower, no more than $115, was set off of, and Stephen Turner was appointed guardian of the two minor children.[10]  The inventory showed $720 in real property and $119 in personal property.[8]  After taking the inventory and itemizing the just debts and administrator's charges, the court ordered the sale of the real estate on 4 August 1840.[10]  This was done in April 1841, and reported to the Court on 4 May 1841.

16 acres of land in Medfield was purchased by James H. Dill, Esquire (Eliza's brother), for a total of $358.  It was subsequently sold by the administrator to Lucy Butterfield of Dedham for $358.[11]  The estate was distributed to the heirs on 8 February 1842.[12]

The gravestone of Alpheus B. Smith is in Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield, Massachusetts.[5]  The inscription reads:

Amazingly, each of them survived their wartime experiences.

I thank God for these men, the families that nurtured them, the wives that supported them, and the children who learned from them the importance of service to their country.

Thank you, gentlemen soldiers, and your families, for your service and your bravery.  I wish that I had known you.  You've provided me with a wonderful ancestry, and I greatly appreciate it, every day.
