I went through the San Diego Union newspaper on GenealogyBank looking for articles about my parents and my grandparents. One of the articles I found was this one:
The transcription is:
"Celebrates Birthday With Party for 17
"Little Miss Betty VBriginia Carringer celebrated her first birthday Friday with a party given by herm other, Mrs. Lyle L. Carringer, at her home, 2054 Harrison street. The decorations were in pink and white.
"Those invited were Great-Grandma Smith and Grandmothers Carringer and Auble; the Misses Myrtle Kemp, Letha Klughardt, Genevieve Berry; Mrs. Dave Gershon, Mrs. Fred Allen, Mrs. Sherwin Smith, Mrs. James Kerr, Mrs. John McCann; the Little Misses Virginia Kerr, Beulah Irene McCann, Betty Virginia Carringer, and Masters Gordon Gershon, Junior Allen and Sydney Smith."
The source citation for the article is:
"Celebratesd Birthday With Party for 17," San Diego [Calif.] Union newspaper, Sunday, 1 August 1920, page 38, column 4; imaged, GenealogyBank (https://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 19 September 2025).
I know who some of the people mentioned are: "Mrs. Lyle L. Carringe" is my grandmother, Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer; "Great-Grandma Smith" is Abigail A. (Vaux) Smith,; "Grandmother Carringer" is Abbey Ardelle "Della" (Smith) Carringer; "Grandmother Auble" is Georgianna (Kemp) Auble; Myrtle Kemp is a cousin of Emily's from Long Beach; and Betty Virginia Carringer is my mother, daughter of Lyle and Emily. There is no mention of the father, Lyle L. Carringer and the grandfather, Henry Austin Carringer, for some reason.
The two Misses (Letha and Genevieve) and five married women (Gershon, Allen, Sherwin, Kerr and McCann) are most likely neighbors and family friends of my grandmother, Emily (Auble) Carringer. Now I know who some of my grandmother's FAN Club are!

One of my great-grandaunts is Effie Eva Carringer (1858-1874), the daughter of my maternal great-grandparents David Jackson and Rebecca (Spangler) Carringer. I found her Find A Grave memorial today, and was saddened by the fact that the gravestone was broken and sunken, obscuring part of the stone's engraving. Here are photographs from her Find A Grave memorial:
