Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Top End-of-Line Ancestors

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  Show us your pedigree (or fan) chart.  Who are your end-of-line ancestors?  Describe the top 5 or 10 of them.

2)  Write your own blog post, or leave a comment on this post, or write something on Facebook.

Here's mine (fan chart for 8 generations from RootsMagic):

My Top 11 end-of-line ancestors are:

*  2nd great-grandfather Devier James Lamphier Smith (1839-1894) - born a Lamphier/Lanfear and adopted by Ranslow and Mary Smith in Jefferson County, New York as a small child.  I know who his Lanfear grandparents are, but I don't know the names of his father and mother.

*  3rd great-grandmother Sarah Fletcher (1802-b1850) - I have only a Bible record with her name.  She was married to Abraham Kemp in 1821 in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.

*  3rd great-grandfather William Knapp (1775-1856) - born in 1775 in Dutchess or Westchester County, New York.  Married to Sarah Cutter in 1804 in Woodbridge, New Jersey.  Many trees say his parents were Shubael and Rebecca (Mead) Knapp, who married in 1783.

*  3rd great-grandmother Mrs. Cornelius Feather (c1785-c1830) - married Cornelius Feather before 1804, perhaps in Trumbull County, Ohio.  They eventually settled in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

*  4th great-grandfather Philip Row (1752-1817) - married in 1772 to Maria/Mary Smith in New Jersey.  Some trees say his parents were Johannes and Catherine (Loscher) Rau of Dutchess County, New York.

*  4th great-grandmother Maria/Mary Smith (1750-1843) - married in 1772 to Philip Row in New Jersey.

*  4th great-grandmother Mary Palmer (1790-1845) - married in 1808 to James Vaux in South Petherton, Somerset, England, and migrated to Erie County, New York in the 1830s.

*  4th great-grandmother Ann Warren (1764-????) - married in 1788 to John Hill in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England.  Some trees say her parents were William and Mary (Nott) Warren of Devonshire, England.

*  4th great-grandmother Hannah Smith (1768-1827) - married in 1789 to Josiah Sawtell in Amherst, Massachusetts, settled in Brookline, New Hampshire and Townsend, Massachusetts.

*  5th great-grandmother Katreen --?-- (1755-1792) - married in 1775 to Abraham Dafoe, a Loyalist.  Settled in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Canada.  Some trees say that her parents were John and Christina (Loyst) Diamond who married in 1782.

*  5th great-grandmother Jerusha --?-- (c1750-1817) - married in 1770 to Burgess Metcalf in New Hampshire, settled in Piermont, New Hampshire.  Some trees say she was a Chandler.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The DeCamp genealogy book by George Morrison notes that a Joannes DeCamp was baptized on 2 April 1677 in the Dutch church in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Laurent and Aeltje (de Mandeville) De Camp.  There is no further record of her, assumed to be a female. The feminine name in Dutch would have been Joanna or Johanna.

Several Kelsey genealogies report that a "Miss DeCamp" (born 1674) married Joseph Kelsey, probably about 1696.

According to the Kelsey genealogies, there were no other DeCamp families in the New York or New Jersey area at that time.

Joannes De Camp married Joseph Kelsey in about 1697 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  They had nine children, all probably born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, but there are no birth records for them[1]:

*  Mercy Kelsey (1698-1760), married 1722 Richard Cutter (1682-1756).
*  Hannah Kelsey (1700-1777), married 1726 James Badgley (1699-1777).
*  Joseph Kelsey (1702-1753)
*  Mary Kelsey (1704-1748), married 1725 John Olliver (1700-1766).
*  Benjamin Kelsey (1706-1765), married 1741 Hannah Atkinson (1708-????).
*  Daniel Kelsey (1708-1759), married 1730 Jemima Clark (1701-1759).
*  Ruth Kelsey (1710-1750), married 1730 Benjamin Ellstone (1712-1760).
*  Phebe Kelsey (1713-????), married 1734 John Wood (1709-????).
*  Lydia Kelsey (1715-????), married 1740 Lewis Winans (1718-????).

Joannes (De Camp) Kelsey died before 1739.  There is no known burial place for her.

Findmypast Friday: London Electoral Registers, Kent Burials, 1912 Ulster Covenant, and More

I received this information from Findmypast today:

==========================================

With electoral registers, burials and so much more, there are over two million new additions to discover.

If you've traced your family's roots back to London, Kent or Ireland, you may just find an ancestor's name in this week's hefty record release. We've updated our Kent Burials, and added two brand-new sets from London and Ulster.

Read on for a full rundown of all that's been added this Findmypast Friday.

London, Lambeth Electoral Registers 1832-1886

First up, we have a brand new set of Lambeth electoral records. Londoners will be delighted to learn that we've added 1,398,843 new register records for the district, with both transcriptions and images available to search.

Lambeth is a historical borough on the south bank of the River Thames. Its population trebled in the first three decades of the 19th century - with over 100,000 inhabitants by c.1830, it housed many of London's poor.

These records, unique to Findmypast, span from 1832 to 1886 and provide valuable insight into a rapidly growing district within the capital city.

Ireland, Ulster Covenant 1912

Next up, we've got an exciting Irish addition. We've added a brand new set from Ulster.

This province in the north of Ireland has seen considerable strife throughout its history. Bolstering our existing collection of Irish records, this new set sheds light on the lives of those involved in the bitter conflict over Irish independence.

With 444,601 records now available for you to search, find out whether your Irish ancestor played a role in this key historical event.

Kent Burials

Last up, we've also updated our collection of Kent burial records. There are 8,635 new additions to explore, spanning almost 500 years, between 1542 and 1992.

These records are from parishes across the county. To learn more about which parishes are included, be sure to consult the full parish list.

From these transcriptions, you can expect to learn a full name, an age, a birthdate, a burial date and place, a residence, an occupation, and the county. In some instances, the grave dedication is also recorded. This emotive detail offers a deeply personal insight into your ancestor's life (and indeed, their death).

Some records contain additional information under the 'Notes' heading - you may learn a marital status, parents' names, and whether the deceased was a foundling.

Over 71 million pages now available to explore

With the addition of a brand new title and updates to a further four, our newspaper collection hit an exciting landmark this week. There are now more than 71 million digitised pages within our ever-expanding archive. This Findmypast Friday, we added a total of 224,018 new pages.

Here's a full rundown of all that's been added this week.

New titles:
Updated titles:
  • Belfast News-Letter, 1971-1976, 1979-1981, 1984, 1986
  • Liverpool Daily Post, 1956-1957, 1959, 1969-1971, 1974, 1978, 1980-1981, 1983, 1985-1986, 1991-1992

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1662 Marriage of Nathaniel FittsRandle and Mary Holley in Barnstable, Massachusetts

 I looked in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings for Treasure Chest Thursday.

The treasure today is the 1662 marriage record of Nathaniel FittsRandle and Mary Holley in Barnstable, Massachusetts:

The marriage record is the 8th line from the top of the left-hand page:

The transcription of this marriage record is:

"Nath'l Fittsrandle & Mary Holley Married Nov'r 1662"

The source citation for this  marriage record is:

"Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988," indexed database and digital images, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), Barnstable > Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1643-1714 Town Records, 1736-1855; Vol. 1 > page 412 (image 196 of 212), Nath'a Fittsrandle and Mary Holley marriage entry, November 1662; citing original data from Massachusetts town and city clerk records in Jay and Delene Holbrook, Massachusetts Vital and Town Records (Provo, Utah : Holbrook Research Institute), Microfiche collection.

This record is a Derivative Source, with Secondary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of Nathaniel Fitz Randolph and Mary Holley/Holloway in Barnstable, Massachusetts.  The record is arranged by family in the same hand over many years, and is thereby Derivative, copied from original town records no longer extant or available.

Nathaniel FitzRandolph was born before 15 May 1642 in Barnstable, Massachusetts, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Blossom) Fitz Randolph.  He died 21 November 1713 in Woodbridge, New Jersey.  He married Mary Holley (or Holloway) (1641-1703) on November 1662 in Barnstable, Massachusetts.  She was the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Allen) Holley/Holloway.  They had 7 children.

Nathaniel and Mary (Holley) Fitz Randolph are my 8th great-grandparents.  I am descended through their son Samuel FitzRandolph (1688-1754) who married Mary Jones (1672-1760) in 1693.
