AncestryDNA Introduces DNA Chromosome Painter

 AncestryDNA has introduced a chromosome painter that shows the ethnicities in each chromosome of your mother and father.  You can read a lot about it in the article at  https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Chromosome-Painter.  This is still in "Beta" development so some details may change as time goes on.

To find this feature, you go to your DNA Story page and scroll down to the bottom right of the page where you will see the Ethnicity Inheritance box and can click on the link to "View Breakdown" that will show you your Chromosome Painter information:

If you can discern which ethnicities belong to your mother and to your father, you can identify the ethnicities by region.  Since my mother's ethnicity is much more diverse (e.g., she has German, Dutch and French ancestry), I identified the left hand side of the ethnicity chart as my mother's, and the right side as my father's. 

Once you click on "View Breakdown" on the chart above, you can see all of your ethnicities on the Chromosome Browser by clicking on the "Explore Now" at the bottom of the "View Breakdown" page.

Here is my Chromosome Painter chart for all of my inherited 22 autosomal chromosomes:

The different colors are for different ethnicities according to AncestryDNA - mine are "England and Northwestern Europe," "Scotland, "Sweden & Denmark," "Norway," and "Wales."

I clicked on the "Maternal" button on the screen above and I can see my mother's ethnicity on each chromosome:

The segment identified as "Wales" is on chromosome 6.  The segments identified as "Norway" are on chromosomes 3, 12 and 20.  

Here is my "Paternal" ethnicity on each chromosome:

According to the AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates, he has no "Wales," "Norway" or "Sweden and Denmark" ancestry.  Most of his ethnicity is "England & Northwestern Europe."  However, the "Scotland" ethnicity is on chromosomes 1, 11, 13,14, 17 and 20.

To see a specific ethnicity, you can click on the specific ethnicity button on the left side of the chart:

On the chart above, I clicked on both "Sweden & Denmark" and "Norway" to see the chromosome breakdown.

This is very interesting, but it does depend on the "reference groups" selected by AncestryDNA to represent each ethnicity.  I have always considered that the AncestryDNA breakdown doesn't represent specific country breakdowns but a broader set of ethnicities.  For instance, I have no known Norway ancestry back to the 17th century, but "Norway" is reflected on my mother's chromosomes because she has German, Dutch, French, Scots-Irish and English ancestry that are the result of Viking, German and Norman invasions and settlements in the 9th to 11th centuries.  The articles notes that the chromosome areas with the "Unassigned" label have less than 0.5% (about 35 cM) and they don't have confdidence in assigning an Ethnicity to those areas.

Note that this is about chromosome ethnicity painting, and not chromosome segment DNA painting.  AncestryDNA does not offer chromosome segment DNA painting at this time.  

It will be interesting to compare the AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates by chromosome with the ethnicity estimates by chromosome from 23andMe.  My guess is that they will be significantly different.

It is difficult to discern the colors on the legend chart on the left side of the screen, especially for this group of ethnicities.  It would be good to make the color circle larger.

Painting My Ancestral Chromosome Map - Post #1

 I have been lax in painting my Chromosome Map on DNA Painter, and made it a genealogy goal for 2020, which I miserably failed.  So I made it a 2021 goal, and have now done as much as I can at this time.

I want to share my results and be a good example for readers who might be considering doing this.  Please understand that I am NOT an expert at DNA testing and analysis, but I love to extend my knowledge and capabilities.  If I can do it, you probably can do it too.

1)  Making a Chromosome Map on DNA Painter is really pretty easy if you have enough DNA matches with known common ancestors (or can figure out the known common ancestors) on MyHeritageDNA, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, and GEDmatch.  

If you only have AncestryDNA matches, then you are out of luck because AncestryDNA does not provide a chromosome browser, and does not provide chromosome segment definitions for your DNA matches, much to the dismay of every AncestryDNA customer who is a genealogist.  If they did, with the 400+ DNA matches with known "Common Ancestors" that I currently have on AncestryDNA, my Chromosome Map would probably be fairly complete.

It helps to understand the chromosome browsers on the DNA services, because that is where you can download the DNA segments from a specific DNA match to a .csv file (the start of a spreadsheet file).  You can then copy the DNA segment information from the spreadsheet into DNA Painter, answer a few questions about the known relationship, and DNA Painter "paints" that segment onto your chromosome representation.  

Several genealogy bloggers who specialize in DNA analysis have written blog posts about the process to turn the segment data into visual segments:

2)  DNA Painter provides the Chromosome Map for FREE for one Map on their website under Chromosome Maps for account holders.

Here is my DNA Painter home page:

3)  Since I have made a chromosome map, it shows me my status.  When I click on the link for my name, I can see my painted Chromosome Map (two screens):

My 23 chromosomes are listed on the left.  Each chromosome has two lines (except my X) - the light blue line is from my father, the light pink line is from my mother.  I only received my X chromosome from my mother because I am male.

All of the other colors are from my DNA matches for whom I have known common ancestors.  The color key on the bottom right shows a different color for the known common ancestors of my DNA matches and myself.  For instance, the bottom common ancestors with the purple color are my grandparents, Frederick W. Seaver and Alma Bessie Richmond, who are my father's parents.  

I don't have any known DNA matches on my mother's side until I get back to the Kemp/Sovereen 2nd great-grandparents. I have segments for the Carringer/Feather, Spangler/King and Vaux/Underhill 3rd great-grandparents.  My mother was an only child, her parents were only children, and I have no DNA matches on any service who have one of my maternal great-grandparents in their ancestry.  I do have several DNA matches on AncestryDNA who descend from my maternal 2nd great-grandparents but I don't have DNA segments from AncestryDNa and they are not on the other services.

In some cases, I have been able to find AncestryDNA matches with known common ancestors (from research or ThruLines) on the services with a chromosome browser and have used them.

The bottom line is that I have painted chromosome segments from 32 DNA matches, in 161 segments.  The Chromosome Map is 26% complete.  I have a long way to go! 

4)  DNA Painter provides a number of Tools, Options and Reports under the gear icon at the top of the Chromosome Map, many of which require a monthly subscription to DNA Painter.  One of the FREE reports is the "All Matches" report, shown below with the match names obscured:

The "All Segment Data" report shows the list of DNA segments, by segment, for each DNA match - I obscured the match names in the chart below:

5)  By clicking the big plus ( + ) icon next to the gear icon at the top of the chromosome map provides a magnified map of each segment on each chromosome with the names of the DNA matches, with the option to turn off the names - I did that for the chart below:

6)  You might ask what can I do next?  Well, I can try to trace the ancestry of my high DNA matches on MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA, 23andMe, and GEDmatch using their names, any family tree information on their profiles, or information I can sleuth from online searches and records to find common ancestors.  I've done that for some DNA matches, and have been successful in finding common ancestors for 30% to 40% of them.  Then I can paint the shared segments into DNA Painter and assign them to known common ancestors.  

Only 74% of my chromosomes to go!

I exist and know about all of this because my parents created a child in about January 1943 and the magic of conception and recombination created all of the above.  

7)  Isn't technology wonderful?  Thank you to Jonny Perl for creating DNA Painter - it's like magic!  Thank you to MyHeritageDNA, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA and GEDmatch for providing chromosome browsers to customers and enabling the easy creation of the DNA segment files.

Dear Randy: "What Is Your Autosomal DNA Testing Strategy?"

 Reader Arthur asked:  "Could you share your updated autosomal DNA testing strategy, inquiring minds want to know!? Or post the link to where you already posted it! Much appreciated, always want to know what people 2 levels above me are thinking."

I just summarized this for my Chula Vista Genealogical Society DNA Interest Group in the December meeting, so here it is:

The basic Autosomal DNA Testing Strategy is to “Fish in all Ponds” to Find Relatives in DNA Matches!  You will never know what you might find if you don't test everywhere!:

1)  Test at AncestryDNA:  They have the most testers, the most (and most "leafy") family trees, so therefore the best chance to find close DNA matches and the most common ancestors for distant matches using the ThruLines feature.  Ancestry also has the Shared Matches feature, but does not have a chromosome browser or access to a clustering program.

2)  Download your AncestryDNA test raw data so that you can upload them to other test sites.  

NOTE:  Ancestry does not accept uploading of raw DNA test data from other websites.  MyHeritage, FamilytreeDNA, 23andMe and LivingDNA permit uploading of raw data, but there may be fees involved.

3) Upload the raw data to MyHeritageDNA (free transfer, $29 to unlock analysis features*).  You will receive different DNA matches because MyHeritage has different customers.  They also have analysis features such as *Chromosome browser, *Autoclusters (clusters of DNA matches), *Theory of Family Relativity (if you have a MyHeritage tree).  You can download a .csv file of your DNA matches and the DNA segments that you share with your DNA matches.

4)  Upload the raw data to FamilyTreeDNA (free transfer, $19 to unlock analysis features).  You will receive different DNA matches, a Chromosome browser, and they offer trees for some of your DNA matches.  They do have a chromosome browser and you can download a .csv file with the DNA segments that you share with the DNA matches.  You can run Genetic Affairs autoclusters and obtain a .csv file of your DNA match clusters.  

5) Upload the raw data to GEDmatch (free to upload, $10/month to unlock Tier 1 analysis features). This is not a testing company - they encourage testers to upload raw data from all testing companies.  They have some free analysis tools, including a chromosome browser.  Other advanced analysis features are in Tier 1 and several of them are unique.  

6) Test at 23andMe (no upload of raw data is permitted) – you will receive different matches because they have a different customer base.  They have free analysis tools, including Relatives in Common, a chromosome browser, but no user-submitted trees.  You can download a .csv file with the DNA segments that you share with the DNA matches. They do have a Family Tree based on relationships with others and shared DNA, which is conjectural.  You can run the Genetic Affairs Autoclusters program and obtain a .csv file of your DNA match clusters.  

7)  Upload the raw data to Living DNA (free to upload, a fee to unlock ethnicity and analysis features) if you have British Isles ancestry.  This site provides DNA matches, but has no links to family trees or other analysis tools at present.

8) Run Genetic Affairs AutoClusters on FTDNA and 23andMe data. ($5/month after trial).

9) Run DNA Painter Chromosome Mapping (after identifying chromosome segments for particular ancestors on other sites).

Some comments:

*  This is what I did without knowing about a strategy.  I got in on the AncestryDNA beta test for free, won a FamilyTreeDNA test, paid for 23andMe, and uploaded to the others.

*  All of the testing sites run customer specials at certain times during the year and at large genealogy conferences. Plan ahead!

*  Each company has a website with a lot of information from scientific to how-to do things on their site.  Learn to use each website.

*  I am not an expert at all of this, but have some knowledge that may make me dangerous.  There are a number of  real experts who have websites, blogs, Facebook groups, and YouTube channels that explain things in much more detail - learn who Blaine Bettinger, CeCe Moore, Roberta Estes, Paul Woodbury, Diahan Southard, Michelle Leonard, Debbie Kennett, Michelle Patient, Dave Dowell, Emily Aulicino, Robin Wirthlin, Margaret O'Brien, Leah Larkin, (and I know I've left some out...sorry!) are and read their works.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your 2020 Plans/Goals/Resolutions for Your Genealogy Research

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans: 

 It's Saturday Night again - 

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!


Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):


1)  It's the New Year, and many readers have already made resolutions, or goals, or plans for one or more tasks or projects.  Or they haven't yet, but could or should.


2)  For this SNGF, please tell us what plans you've made, or what goals you've stated, or what resolutions you've averred for 2020.  Writing them down may help you achieve them.  Do one or more as you wish.

3)  Put it in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link on this post so readers can find your resolutions/goals/plans.  

Here's mine:

I usually don't do this because it seems that I always fail.  However, I will state two goals that I hope to accomplish in 2020:

*  I want to apply to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants for at least one ancestral line - the William White line.  Several friends of mine recently applied and one received membership in GSMD so it can be done.  I feel a responsibility to do this for my cousin Laura who asked for help several years ago, and sent me the information she had collected, and I have not progressed past reviewing her material and my material.  I summarized it in Do I Have Enough Information to Join Society of Mayflower Descendants?  A reader in Illinois (?) who is a GSMD member offered to create an application and thought that I had enough evidence to support my application (and hopefully Laura's and any other Seaver/Richmond descendant).  I know the local and state colony leaders so perhaps this can happen.

*  A second plan is to keep gathering my triangulated DNA match data from the chromosome browsers on FamilyTreeDNA, MyHeritageDNA, 23andMe, and GEDmatch and create my DNA Painter display of which bits of every chromosome in my DNA came from which ancestors.  I have started the gathering process with MyHeritageDNA, but I have not finished it.  I need to do one of the sites each month, and finish this process, put the data into DNA Painter, and see the results.

It would help greatly if AncestryDNA provided a chromosome browser showing triangulated DNA segments for my DNA matches, but they don't.  They provide more matches, with known common ancestors, than all of the other sites combined - it's not even close!
