RootsMagic Version 9 Updated to Version 9.1.1

 RootsMagic was updated to Version 9.1.0 on 9 November 2023 and then updated again on 17 November 2023 to Version 9.1.1.  The RootsMagic Update History page provides limited details about the two most recent changes:

In order to use Web Hints and TreeShare to work with Ancestry, you must enable Two-Pass Authorization in your Ancestry.com account, and be logged into Ancestry on your browser when you use RootsMagic, and your Ancestry login credentials in RootsMagic must match with the browser login credentials.  

In order to use Web Hints and FamilySearch Family Tree with FamilySearch, you must be logged into FamilySearch on your browser and your FamilySearch login credentials in RootsMagic must match with the browser login credentials.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Have You Written/Made Genealogy Books?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)   Have you written or made a genealogy or family history book for your family, for eBooks, or for book publication?  How did you do it?

2)  Write your own blog post, or leave a comment on this post, or write something on Facebook.

Here's mine:

1)   I started doing genealogy research in 1988, and by 1994 I had done enough research and identified many of my ancestors, and recorded the information in Family Tree Maker.  I wanted a book to present to my mother for her 75th birthday in July 1994.  I used Family Tree Maker to make an ancestors report for eight generations, saved it as a Word document, added a cover page, title page, dedication, preface, Table of Contents, Introduction and some family photographs.  I added notes but no sources or index.  I printed the pages on my dot matrix printer and took the stack of pages down to the local UPS Store.  They quickly printed 5 copies with one-sided pages, put them into a comb binding with a thick stock cover and back, and I was all set.  The Ancestry of Betty Virginia Carringer by Randall J. Seaver was born!  My mother was beyond thrilled.  I gave a copy to my two brothers also.   I kept the other two copies and used one for corrections and additions.  

2)  I decided to do the same thing for my father's ancestry, which is more extensive than my mother's because mot lines go back to the 1600s.  So I wrote a 4-generation ancestor report for my father's ancestry, and then 8-generation reports for all of his great-grandparents, in Family Tree Maker.  I saved them as word files, printed them out on the desktop printer, and put them in three-hole notebooks, but I did not publish them.  I have a set of these reports from 2002, plus another for my wife's ancestry.  

3)  In 2012, I created ancestor reports for my mother's ancestry, my father's ancestry, and Linda's ancestry, and descendants of my Seaver, Dill, Carringer, Auble, and Vaux lines, again using Family Tree Maker desktop software, but for a Book.  I did them all with names, dates, places, spouses, and children in ahnentafel order, with sources and an index, but without notes, and saved them in PDF format as eBooks.  I uploaded them to the free Scribd website, and they are still there - searchable in Google.  You can read them (and/or download them) at   https://www.scribd.com/user/43095920/Randy-Seaver.  

4) I have done a lot more research in the past 11 years, and have started to update these eBooks to include everything I have about my ancestral families back to about 1600.  I will use Family Tree Maker 2019 desktop software for a Book because the formatting is better than RootsMagic 9.  I will put them on Scribd again as eBooks (and delete the old reports) and perhaps try to put them in the FamilySearch Digital Library.  

My experience is that no one in the family is interested in genealogy and surname books and reports, but they know that they will be on my computer system, on the FOREVER subscription site, in Ancestry Member Trees, MyHeritage family trees, and FamilySearch Family Tree.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

 Well, it's a test obituary, with a projected death date, but it works well.

I had to feed ChatGPT 3.5 the useful information - it would be like filling out a form at the funeral home with personal information about the deceased.

This took all of 30 minutes to plan and execute. The actual obituary took less than 15 seconds to write. And it's a lot more flowery than this retired engineer could do. I wonder how much it would cost to publish it in the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper?

I hope my daughters and grandkids save this somewhere just in case something happens to me before I reach 100 years and one day.

David La Tourette was born 28 December 1699 in Fresh Kills, Staten Island, New York, the son of Jean and Marie (Mercereau) La Tourette[1-3].  He was baptized in the French Church in Manhattan on 7 January 1699/1700[1-2]. 

David married Catherine Poillon (1712-????) before about 1730, probably in the French Church on Staten Island[1-2].  She was the daughter of Jacques and Francoise (Billiou) Poillion.  They had four children, all born in Richmond County, New York:

*  Jacques La Tourette (1731-b1785), married Elizabeth Lewis (c1716-1785).

*  Marie "Mary" La Tourette (1734-1791), married c1756 Jonathan Lewis (c1715-1786).

*  Catherine La Tourette (1737-c1788), married 1766 Stephen Bedell (c1745-1837). 

*  David LaTourette (1738-1808), married (1) 1761 Elizabeth Morgan (c1743-????); (2) 1783 Marie Simonson (c1742-????).

The book LaTourette Annals in America describes David La Tourette as[1]:

"He was born at Fresh Kills, Staten Island.  His wife was a daughter of Jacque Poillon and Catherine Le Conte.  Catherine, through her parents, inherited considerable wealth, including lands along Price's Bay, Staten Island.  David was a planter by occupation.  He and Catherine reared their children on the farm here mentioned.  Their children were baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church."

The book Staten Island and Its People: A History, 1609-1929 has the following information about David La Tourette and the La Tourette family[2]:

"Among the early settlers on Staten Island perhaps none attract more interest because of the colonial record than the ancient LaTourettes, who were of the old village of Richmond.  Even to this day there are a number residing here and in tracing their ancestry we find that they have been associated in their activities and in marriage with other leading pioneer families of the Island.  The story of the LaTourettes here relates principally to the family which has resided at Richmond.

"Jean LaTourette, native of Osse in Bearn, came to America and some time later married Marie Mercereau on July 16, 1693, in the French Church in Manhattan.  The record of the marriage is to be found in the "Collections of the Huguenot Society of America," Vol. I, p.29.

"In the same volume the births and baptisms of four children were recorded, viz. 1. Marie, born September 23, 1694, baptized December 6, 1694; 2. Jean, born October 6, 1694, baptized October 20, 1695;  3. Pierre, born November 22, 1697, baptized November 28, 1697; 4.  David, born December 22, 1699, baptized January 7, 1700.  The census of 1706 indicates the subsequent birth of two daughters, Susana, who married Jan Van Pelt, and Hester.  Jean La Tourette appears as a witness and as a freeholder on Staten Island in 1702, and in 1706, according to record, was fifty five years old.  The date of his death is unknown.

"Of his sons: 1. Jean or John la Tourette, born October 6, 1695, in Manhattan, married Marie Mercereau.  He appears as an assessor and a member of the militia in 1715, as a freeholder in 1720, a justice of the peace in 1738 and a vestryman of St. Andrews, Staten Island, in 1732.  His children were : David, born in 1726; Marie, born in 1728; and Henricus, born in 1731. 2.  Pierre Latourette married Marianne Mersereau.  Their children were: David and Jacques (twins), born in 1730; Marie Susanne, born in 1734; and Elizabeth, born in 1736.  The latter married a Nicholas Backer.  3.  David Latourette  married Catharine Poillon, whose children were: Jacques, born in 1732; Marie, born in 1734; and others (including, perhaps, David).

"The Latourettes seem to have been among those French Church people who joined to the call to the Rev. Cornelius Van Sandfordt to preside over the united French and Dutch churches in Richmond County.  The baptisms of David's first children are therefore to be found in the old Dutch church records.  Later, as we know from a letter found in Hawk's 'Transcripts,' most of the French congregation joined the Church of St. Andrews, the records of which prior to 1852 are missing.

"We are thus unable to give the baptismal record of David, son of David and Catharine (Poillon) Latourette, but his gravestone in St. Andrew's churchyard shows that he died November 19, 1808, aged sixty-nine years and ten months, and was therefore born about 1738. He appears as a communicant of the church in 1770, and as a subscriber to the salary of Rev. John H. Rowland in 1787.  In 1852 Charles E. Anthon in 'Anthon's Notes,' which are now the property of the Public Museum of St. George, states that he was the grandfather (probably) of the David Latourette then at Richmond, whose brother John made a family tree and later 'died in the South  The family vault is in St. Andrew's churchyard, dated 1855.  The census of 1790 indicates eight families of the Latourette name then on Staten Island, of which David's, as indicated by the possession of nine slaves, was evidently the most important."

David LaTourette died before 23 March 1764 in Richmond County when his will was presented to the Surrogates Court[4].  The will of David La Tourette of Richmond County was written 23 February 1764 and proved 25 April 1764 in Richmond County Surrogates Court[4].  The transcribed will is:

In the name of God Amen, the twenty third day of February one thousand Seven hundred and Sixty-four, I David La Tourrette of the County of Richmond in the Province of New York, yeoman, being weak in Body but of Perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God therefore calling unto mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing it is appointed to all men once to Die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in the following manner and form, principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it and my Body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection at the last day I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life I do order and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. 

Secondly my Will and desire is that after my Decease as much of my moveable Estate be sold as will be sufficient to satisfie pay and discharge all my just Debts and funeral Charges. Item I give unto my Son, James La Tourrette my Gun and Sword; Item I give and bequeath unto my two Sons James and David LaTourrette all and singular my Lands and Messuages and Tenements to be divided betwixt them in the following manner and form Viz: James to have the one half of the Clear Land the Westermost part and David to have the other half the Eastermost part and woodland to be divided equally betwixt them according to Quantity Quality by them freely to be Possessed and enjoyed by them their heirs and assigns for ever, they paying to their sisters Mary and Catharine as follows that is to say James to pay to his sister Mary three Hundred pounds of good and current money of the Province aforesaid and to be paid her one year after my Wife's Decease and David to pay to his sister Catharine the sum of three hundred Pounds of like good and Current money as aforesaid and to be paid to her one year after my Wifes Decease and my Will is that if my Daughter Catharine should die before my Wife and without Issue that her part or portion shall be at my Wifes proper disposal to do with it as she shall ^think^ most meet. 

Item I give unto my well beloved Wife Catherine La Tourrette the use of all my Estate Real and Personal as long as she shall remain my Widow but if shall come to marry or Die my Will is that all the movable Estate that then shall be, shall be equally divided betwixt my two Sons James and David La Tourrette share and share alike for all that shall be over and above one hundred Pounds, for my Will is that my Daughter Catherine shall have the value of one hundred pounds worth first out of my moveable Estate before a division be made. 

Lastly I nominate Constitute and appoint my Wife above named to be Executrix and my two Sons James and David La Tourrette, my Son in Law Jonathan Lewis and my Brother Henry LaTourrette Executors of this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments Wills Testaments Legacies and Executors by me in any wise before this time named Willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.                                                                                            David La Tourrette

Richmond County } SS  Be it remembered that on the twenty third day of March one thousand seven hundred and Sixty four Personally came and appeared before me Benjamin Seaman Surrogate of the said County, Henry Perine and John Stilwell both of the said county Yeomen and being duely sworn on their Oaths declared that they and each of them did see David La Tourrette sign & Seal the within written Instrument purporting to be the Will of the said David La Tourrette bearing date the twenty third day of February one thousand seven hundred and Sixty four and heard him publish and Declare the same as his last Will and Testament that at the time thereof he the said David La Tourrette was of sound disposing mind and memory to the best of the Knowledge and belief of them the Deponents and that their names subscribed to the said Will are of their respective proper handwriting which they Subscribed as Witnesses to the said Will in the Testators presence and that they the Deponents likewise saw Edward Perine the other Witness to the said Will Subscribe his name as Witness thereto in the Testators Presence.               Benja. Cadwallader Colden Esquire his Majesty's Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of the Province of New York and the Territories depending thereon in America  To all to whom these presents shall come or may concern Greeting Know ye that at Richmond County on the twenty third day of March last before Benjamin Seaman Esquire thereunto Delegated and appointed the last Will and Testament of David La Tourrette Deceased (a copy whereof is hereunto annexed) was proved and is now approved and allowed of by me the said Deceased having whilst he lived and at the time of his Death goods Chattels and Credits within this Province by means whereof the proving and Registering the said Will and the granting Administration of all and singular the said goods Chattels and Credits and also the auditing allowing and final discharging the account thereof doth belong unto me and that Administration of all and singular the goods Chattels and Credits of the said Deceased and any way Concerning his Will is granted unto Catharine La Tourrette James La Tourette and David La Tourrette the three Executors in the said Will named being first duely sworn well and faithfully to Administer the same and to make and Exhibit a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the said goods Chattels and Credits and also to render a Just and true account thereof when thereunto required. In Testimony whereof I have caused the Prerogative Seal of the Province of New York to be hereunto affixed at the City of New York the twenty fifth day of April one thousand seven hundred and sixty four.
