Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Five "Fun" or "Different" Facts

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  We all find "fun" or "different" information about ourselves, our relatives and ancestors in our genealogy and family history pursuits.  What are five "fun" or "different" facts in your life or your ancestors lives?

2) Tell us about your five fun or different facts in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own post.

Thank you to Jacquie Schattner for suggesting this topic.

Here's mine:

*  As a high school senior in my 1961 yearbook entry, it says I "...took an interest in bowling, swimming, and the Hully Gully."  "The Hully Gully" was a song (and dance moves) by the Olympics in 1960 that was never a big hit.  I could never do the dance moves.  But the cool kids at school loved it - they used to line up in the hallway at school during class breaks and sing and dance.  See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fMlfXmHsb4

*  My father arrived at his Aunt Emily's house in San Diego without notice in December 1940, driving from Massachusetts in 3 days.  Aunt Emily's granddaughter, Marcia, was age 14 and had an art class taught by my mother (in her first teaching job at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in San Diego).  One day, my father came home from work and at the dinner table he said "I need a girlfriend..." Marcia piped up with "I know a pretty teacher at school."  Somehow, the meeting was arranged. 18 months later they were married, and here I am today telling the story.

*  My maternal grandfather, Lyle L. Carringer (1891-1976) worked for 56 years at Marston's Department Store in downtown San Diego.  He started as a cash boy in 1905 and worked his way
up to being an auditor, a bookkeeper, and "Chief Auditor" when he retired in 1961 at age 70.  I think he is how I got my love of mathematics.

*  Lyle's mother, Della (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944) was an artist and a family historian (she kept an active correspondence with her aunts, uncles and cousins from all over the country by postal mail - I have her scrapbook, some letters and some papers).  She also controlled the financial affairs in the family - she bought and sold real estate in San Diego throughout her married life.  She met her future husband in Wano, Kansas when she (and her father) received land grants in Cheyenne County, Kansas in the 1880s, next to Henry Austin Carringer's land grant.  Austin and Della acted together in melodramas in Wano before coming to San Diego by train on their 1887 honeymoon.  They never left!

*  My 2nd great-grandparents, James and Hannah (Rich) Richman came from Wiltshire in England in 1856 to Putnam, Connecticut, and most of the males worked in the family.  Their son, Thomas Richmond (1848-1917) married Julia "Juliette" White in 1867 and they had 9 children.  The whole family was musically talented, and my paternal grandmother Alma Bessie (Richmond) Seaver played the organ and piano at churches in Leominster, Massachusetts for many years.

I didn't get the art gene from Della, or the music gene from Bessie, but I sure got the math gene from Lyle, and the family history gene from all of them.  I love my ancestors!!!

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

52 Relatives: Charles Percival Richmond (1880-1911) of Connecticut, Massachusetts and California

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents - see the list in 52 Ancestors Biographies.

I started a new weekly series called "52 Relatives" to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short sketches with events and source citations.  They deserve a sketch also - they were integral parts of the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

                                               =================================

Charles Percival Richmond was born 25 May 1880 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut, the sixth child (of nine children) of Thomas and Julia E. (White) Richmond[1].

The Thomas Richmond family moved to Leominster, Massachusetts in about 1895.

In the 1900 US census, the Thomas Richmond family resided at 42 Summer Street in Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts[2]. The family included:

*  Thomas Richmond -- head, white, male, born Jun 1848, age 51, married, for 31 years, born England, parents born England, immigrated in 1856, a resident of the US for 44 years, a naturalized citizen, an overseer of a woolen mill, rents a house

*  Juliette Richmond -- wife, white, female, born Sep 1848, age 51, married, for 31 years, 9 children born, 1 living (obviously an error), born CT, parents born RI

*  Grace Richmond -- daughter, white, female, born Aug 1876, age 23, single, born CT, father born England, mother born CT, a shirt maker

*  Emily W. Richmond -- daughter, white, female, born Jan 1879, age 21, single, born CT, father born England, mother born CT

*  Charles E. Richmond -- son, white, male, born May 1880, age 20, single, born CT, father born England, mother born CT, a painter

*  Alma B. Richmond -- daughter, white, female, born Feb 1882, age 18, single, born CT, father born England, mother born CT, housework

*  Edwin T. Richmond -- son, white, male, born Dec 1883, age 16, single, born CT, father born England, mother born CT, a laundryman

*  James H. Richmond -- son, white, male, born Nov 1886, age 13, born CT, father born England, mother born CT, at school

Charles P. Richmond, age 26, a chemist, native of the USA, with 9 pieces of baggage, who embarked at La Union, El Salvador and arrived in San Francisco on April 1905 aboard the S.S. City of Sydney vessel, W.H. McLean master[3].

Charles Percival Richmond married Jessie Louise Brown on 25 July 1907 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California[4].  Charles was a native of Connecticut, aged 27 years, white, a resident of Santa Barbara; Jessie was a native of Canada, aged 25 years, white, and a resident of Santa Barbara.  The license was granted on 25 July 1907 by the County Clerk, and they were married on 25 July 1907 with witnesses H.L. Erwin and W. A. Griswold in Santa Barbara.  Jessie was born 13 August 1882 in Canada, the daughter of Aaron L. and Agnes Huldah (Cleveland) Brown.  She died 27 October 1947 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barba County, California.

Charles and Jessie (Brown) Richmond had one child:

William Brown "Bud" Richmond, born 13 September 1909 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California, died 27 January 2003 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California.  He married Jane Elizabeth McPherson (1915-1999) in 1947 in Santa Barbara.  They had no children.

In the 1910 United States Census, the Charles P. Richmond household resided at 1034 Bath Street in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California[5].  The household included:

*  Charles P. Richmond - Head, male, white, age 29, first marriage, married 2 years, born Connecticut, father born England, mother born Connecticut, speaks English, a typesetter, works in Linotype industry, a worker, worked 30 hours last week, can read and write, owns home free of mortgage.

Charles Percy Richmond died 29 April 1911 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California at the age of 30[6].  The death record indicates that he was age 30, born 25 May 1880 in Connecticut, died 29 April 1911 in Santa Barbara, married, a printer, white, father Thomas Richmond born in England, mother Julia White born in Connecticut, buried 2 May 1911 in Santa Barbara.

An obituary was published in The Morning Press [Santa Barbara, Calif.] newspaper dated Sunday, 30 April 1911 (page 8, column 4)[7]:

"CHARLES RICHMOND PASSES AWAY

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1710 Christening of Joseph Rich[man] in Hilperton, Wiltshire

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - an opportunity to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history research and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1710 christening entry for Joseph Rich[man] in the Hilperton, Wiltshire parish records:

The christening entry is the 8th entry  in the list:

The transcription of this record is::

"[1710] Octob 31. Baptized Joseph The son of Mark Rich & Elizabeth"

The source citation for this record is:

"Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812," indexed database with record  images, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), Hilperton > Parish Registers > 1694-1736, image 15 of 40, Joseph Rich christening entry, 31 October 1710, son of Mark Rich and Elizabeth; Original data: Wiltshire Church of England Parish Registers, Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England.

This is an entry in the Hilperton, Wiltshire parish register.  It is an Original Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the christening of  Joseph Rich, son of Mark and Elizabeth Rich of Hilperton, Wiltshire.

I am very sure that the surname in this record should be Richman - Mark and Elizabeth (Tremby) Richman had four other children baptized in Hilperton in this time period.  There are no persons named Mark Rich in the Hilperton parish records.  And only one marriage of a Mark Richman and an Elizabeth in the Hilperton parish records, or all of Wiltshire,  in this time frame.  Sometimes the parish clerk wrote the name Rich instead of Richman in the records.

Joseph Richman (1710-1761) married Elizabeth Rawlings (1714-1770) on 14 June 1731 in Whaddon, Wiltshire.

Joseph and Elizabeth (Rawlings) Richman are my 5th great-grandparents; they had at least 8 children, including my 4th great-grandfather John Richman (1744-1808) who married Mary Parsons (1750-1802) in 1775 in Hilperton, Wiltshire.
