In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- A Fearless Female Writing Prompt

It's Saturday Night,

time for more Genealogy Fun!!

For this week's mission (should you decide to accept it), I want you to:
1) Read Lisa Alzo's blog post "Fearless Females Blogging Prompts Series Returns for 2019"
on her blog, The Accidental Genealogist.

2) Choose one of her daily blog prompts from the list (this is March 9th, do that one if you don't want to choose another), and write about it.

3) Tell us about it in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, or in a Facebook post. Please leave a comment here with a link to your post.

Here's mine:

I'm going to choose the March 8th prompt: "Did one of your female ancestors leave a diary, journal, or collection of letters? Share an entry or excerpt."

My great-grandmother, Della (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944) kept a scrapbook, wrote letters to family and friends, and kept a journal for at least one year, 1929. I have transcribed the journal in my Della's Journal series.

I have transcribed several of the letters that were in the "collection" of artifacts, ephemera and papers. One of them has been very useful - a rough draft of a letter she wrote to at least one sister or cousin, and perhaps to several of them. Here it is:

Letter from Della (Smith) Carringer to her "cousins" (unspecified). Undated, although it is probably October 1903. No envelope. The letter is on “Greetings from Southern California” letterhead, with three pictures (copyright 1901 by Edw. H. Mitchell S.F.):

San Diego
510 Watkins Ave.

Dear Cousins,

Your good letter recived and I was so surprised to hear of two more boys in the family but I know George is proud now the men always are when it is a boy. I always wanted a girl I think they are just as nice don’t you? Wish I could have had my two boys to raise together. Hope you all can keep yours they are so much company one for the other. But I am thankfull for my one boy. He will be twelve next month. He is doing nicely in school now.

If it is not to much trouble when you write next time give me the childrens ages for I want to set down all of the cousins children and see how big a tree we will be in fifty years from now. Davie was fourty the 15th of this month so that makes the fourth to enter the four tens if Orpha & Nellie had lived. 1 I am the oldest. 2 Orpha next then 3 Nellie & 4 Davie. 5 (Ada dead). 6 Mary Dyar. 7 Matie Smith. 8 (Aggie Smith dead). Then 10 George 9 Myrtle Crouch. 11 Amy. 12 Willie C. 13 Lutie S. (dead). 14 Louie. Bert Vaux 15 (Ralph Crouch dead), 16 Bert Vaux. 17 Guy Vaux dead 19 Callie. I think 18 Gean Woodward was older than Callie but I do not know for shure. You know from there down Myrtle is older than George for I can remember her saying Monkey for Munger when he was a baby. You know from there down this younger generation of cousins.

I quickly figured out who the "parents" of this family are - it's Samuel and Mary Ann (Underhill) Vaux. Note the 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren comment. The names of the children given on the list above are all children of the children of Samuel and Mary Ann (Underhill) Vaux.

I think that this letter was sent to Della's aunt, Celia Ann (Vaux) (Redfield) Munger in Belleville, Kansas because she refers to George's having just had a son - George is certainly George Francis Munger of Belleville, who had a son, Frank E. Munger on 30 May 1903, and had two daughters before that. The second boy that Della refers to is probably Amy (Munger) Doctor's son, Peter Doctor, who was born in August 1903 in Belleville.

I really do think that Della would be ecstatic that someone in the family found her collection and has used it to create a family tree. I also think that she would be amazed at what I've found in her ancestry, and in her husband's ancestry also.

Surname Saturday -- CORK (England to colonial New England)

It's Surname Saturday, and I'm "counting down" my Ancestral Name List each week.

I am working in the 9th great-grandmothers by Ahnentafel number, and I am up to Ancestor #2259 who is Audrey CORK (1590-1638). [Note: the more recent ancestral families have been covered in earlier posts.]

Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Children of Henry Moorecock and Audrey Cork are:
* Bennet Moorecock (1619-????).
* Nicholas Moorecock (1621-????).
* Mary Moorecock (1625-1694), married 1649 William Brown (1624-1694).

I have no other information on the Moorecock or Cork families. Some derivative sources have Mary's maiden name as Murdock.

However, in The Great Migration, Audrey (Cork) Moorecock, widow of Henry Moorecock, is named as the first wife of Thomas Whitton (1599-1664). They married in 1625 in Kent, and Thomas died in Plymouth. The sketch for Thomas Whitton names the children of Henry and Audrey (Cork) Moorecock.

New Cincinnati Records Available To Search This Findmypast Friday

There are more than 7 million new records and newspaper articles available to search this Findmypast Friday, including:

Scotland, Dundee & Forfarshire (Angus) Hearth Tax 1691

Did you have Scottish ancestors from Dundee and the county of Forfarshire (Angus)? Search over 50,000 Hearth Tax records from 1691 to find out the number of hearths found within their home. Details such as this will provide you with clues about the family's wealth and status.

In 1690, Parliament granted a tax of 14 shillings on hearths including kilns. Heads of households, landowners, and tenants were liable for the tax, only hospitals and the poor living on charity from the parish were exempt from the tax. The money raised from the tax was then used to fund the army.

Scotland, People of Banffshire 1334-1851

Explore more than 28,000 extracts that taken from original Kirk Session minutes. Responsible for parish business, and the morals of the parishioners, the Kirk Session was the lowest level of a church court and minutes typically contained a detailed account of the parish business.

Banffshire is a county in the north-east part of Scotland. It is bounded on the north by the Moray Firth, on the east and south-east by Aberdeenshire, and on the west by the counties of Moray and Inverness.

British India Office Deaths & Burials

Over 2,000 additional records have been added to our collection of British India Office Deaths & Burials. The new additions consist of endowment registers spanning the years 1897 to 1947. These registers document private endowments for the upkeep of graves. Please note, the year given will be between one and five years after the death or burial actually took place.

British India Office Deaths & Burials now contains over 594,000 records that will enable you to discover details about the deaths of your ancestors who died in the UK, British India, Burma and other territories connected to the India office (St Helena, Sumatra, Kuwait, Aden, Penang, Macao). Discover where, when and in some cases how they died as well as where they were buried.

United States Obituary Notices

Over 7.1 million additional records have been added to our collection of United States Obituary Notices. From this index of obituary notices, you can discover your ancestor's name, birth and death years, and obituary text. This collection has been obtained from the tributes.com and currentobituary.com websites. Additional information such as images and details about the records can be found on the source's website.

Each record consists of a transcript that will reveal a combination of your ancestor's birth year, death date, obituary text and location.

PERiodical Source Index

Over 18,000 articles from a variety of publications have been added to the Index. The PERiodical Source Index (PERSI) enables you to easily locate key information about people and places. It contains millions entries from thousands of historical, genealogical and ethnic publications, making it an invaluable, comprehensive family history resource.

The Index provides a simple way to access articles, photos, and other material you might not find using traditional search methods. This can help to build the historical context around your personal research, and the world your ancestors lived in.

Global Records Update

Unearth your Caribbean roots with three new indexes of births & baptisms, marriages and burials containing over 600,000 records and spanning the years 1590 to 1928.

These records cover a variety of nationalities and countries including Antigua, the Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama.

British & Irish Newspaper Update

This week have added 139,520 new pages to our collections. We are delighted to welcome four brand new titles this week, three of which cover the late twentieth century: London title the Harefield Gazette, the Reading Evening Post and Buckinghamshire title the Amersham Advertiser. Rounding off our new titles this week is the Orcadian, which covers the years 1854 to 1912 and was published in Kirkwall, Orkney.

We have updates to ten of our existing titles this week, with new pages covering the length and breadth of the British Isles and Ireland. We have updates to titles covering the counties of Kent, Middlesex, Cambridgeshire, Sussex, and Warwickshire, as well as updates to our Scottish and Irish titles.
