Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - The Date Your Grandmother Was Born

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

Here's mine:

1) I chose my paternal grandmother, Alma Bessie Richmond who was born 16 February 1882 in Killingly, Connecticut to Thomas and Juliet E. (White) Richmond. 16 February 1882 was a Thursday.

Method: I have a birth certificate for my grandmother naming the date and her parents names. I Googled the date.

2) One of the headlines on 16 February 1882 in the San Diego Union newspaper was "Tammany Joins the Republicans in the New York Legislature." Another was "Great Land slip in north Carolina."

Method: Search GenealogyBank for page 1 of the San Diego newspaper.

3) Historical events that have occurred on 16 February:

* 600 AD: Pope Gregory the Great decrees saying "God bless You" is the correct response to a sneeze

There are over 57,000 new records available to search this Findmypast Friday, including;

Kent, Lydd Midwife's Birth Register 1757-1815

Search for your Kent ancestors in William Waylett's birth register. The collection contains over 2,400 records transcribed from the original register of William Waylett (1729-1815), a male midwife who practiced in Lydd and the surrounding parishes on Romney Marsh in Kent.

Transcripts span the years 1757 to 1815 and will reveal a combination of your ancestor's birth date, birth place, parent's names and any additional notes. Notes may include details of the pregnancy, delivery, mother, or payment for services.

Sussex Monumental Inscriptions

Over 1,800 new records have been added to our collection of Sussex Monumental Inscriptions. The new additions cover churchyards in Eastbourne, Litlington, Lullington and West Dean.

Each record consists of a transcript that will list a combination of your ancestor's birth year, age at death, death year, location, inscription, number in grave and register reference.

Northumberland and Durham Memorial Inscriptions

Over 14,000 new records have been added to our collection of Northumberland and Durham Memorial Inscriptions. The new additions cover churchyards in Birtley, Blyth, Boldon, Eighton Banks, Gosforth, Great Lumley, Penshaw, Ryhope, South Shields, Whitley Bay and Woodhorn.

Each result includes a transcription of an original inscription. The amount of information listed may vary although most transcripts will include a combination of your ancestor's burial year, birth date, death date, age at death, denomination, inscription, location, plot, stone type and any additional notes.

Yorkshire Burials

Over 38,000 new records from Stoney Royd Cemetery in Halifax have been added to our collection of Yorkshire burials. Yorkshire burials now contains over 5.1 million records spanning more than 400 years of the county's rich history.

Each record contains a transcript and many include an image of the original record. Transcripts will reveal a combination of your ancestor's age, birth year, burial date and burial place. Images can contain more valuable information for your family tree such as the names of other family members or your ancestor's occupation.

Rachel Allen was born on 11 July 1708 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. She was the fourth child (of five) born to Joseph and Rachel (--?--) Allen of Dartmouth, and her birth was recorded in the Dartmouth town record book with her siblings[1-2].

Rachel married Ichabod Kirby on 1 March 1732/3 in Dartmouth[3]. A marriage contract was obtained with the Kirby family papers[4]. They had four children between 1734 and 1747, all recorded in the Dartmouth town records.

Rachel's father, Joseph Allen (1667-1735) died in January 1735, and in his will bequeathed a tract of land in Dartmouth to his four daughters, proved 18 March 1735, saying[5]:

" I Give and Bequeath unto my four Daughters viz Lidia Allen Phillis Gifford Rachel Kirbey and Elezebeth Gifford to them and their heires and assigns forever forty five acres of Land a Peace of that tract of Land Scituate in sd Dartmouth and Lying at or westward of the new sawmill, which Part of sd mill Did formerly belong to William Soul of said Dartmouth, Deceased, but if the Survey of said Tract of Land doth not Stand Good or be made good in that Place to be understood at or to the westward of said mill, that my said Daughters shall have forty five acres of Land a piece were it Shall be Laid out of the undevided Land in Leu thereof in the same Devision."

Ichabod Kirby died on 11 February 1793, and in his 1788 will he bequeathed to his wife, Rachel, the following[6]:

"I give and bequeath unto my well-beloved wife Rachel Keirby all my houshold goods of every Sorte and kind whatsoever Excepting Such as I Shall hereafter otherwise Dispose of moreover I give unto her my Said wife my Loom and all my Loom tackling of Every Sort whatsoever. I also give unto my Said wife my gold necklace as Long as She Remains my widdow and after that to Return where I Shall give it. I also give her my Said wife Sidesadle and Pillion and my worsted Combs together with all my Spining wheals and my Real.I also give unto my Said wife the use and Improvement of the one half of my now Dwelling house She my Said wife to have her Choise and to take which half of She Pleases with a Priviledge in my Seller sufficient for her owne use for and During the term she Remains my widow and I also give unto her my said wife twelve Bushels of Indian Corne one hundred weight of good Pork that is so much of each Sort yearly and Every year During the time She Shall Remain my widow to be Provided and Delivered unto her yearly and every year as aforesaid by my Son John Keirby which I whereby him to Do. I also give unto my Said wife ten Pounds of good Sheeps wool ten Pounds of good flex from the Swingle two Bushels of good Rye five good gees fore gallons of good Mollasses one hundredweight of good Beef and fore Spanish milled Silver Dollars the Keeping one Cow well and Milking Said cow and the milk Brought into the hous to her and two hens all to Be Kept well the hens about the Door and the Cow on Some Part of my homested farm Both winter and Summer all to be Kept and Performed at and by the Cost of my Son David Keirby which I so hereby order him my said Son to Do yearly and Every year until my wife his mother Shall Cease to be my widow. I also give unto my Said wife So much fire wood Cut a Sutable Length for the fier Brought and laid handy to her Door as she Shall or may have occation to maintain one fier for her owne use and the grate wood Laid on the fier to Be Provided and Delivered as aforesaid by and at the Cost of my Son David Keirby yearly and Every year During the time She Shall Remain my widow. I also give unto my said wife Eight Pounds of good Butter thirty weight of good Chease one Barrel of good Cyder ten Bushels of good winter appels & it is to Be understood the Sheeps Wool the flax the yet he gees the molasses the Beef the Dollars the Butter and Chees the Cyder and apples, that is to much of Each to be Provided Paid and Delivered unto her my Said wife by my Son David Keirby yearly and Every year During the term She Shall Remain my widow which I order my Son to do for his mother. I also give unto my Said wife one of my Cows and She to take her Choise thereof. Furthermore it is to be understood that all the giftes herein given to my wife are given to her in Lew of her Right of Dower or Power of thirds in my Estate and Not otherwise. Further my mind and will is that if the Cow given to my wife Should fail then for my Son David to take her to himself and Retain another good Cow in her Room."

Rachel (Allen) Kirby died 12 May 1801, according to the Kirby family papers[7]. There is no burial record available for Rachel Kirby. There are no probate records for Rachel Kirby in the Bristol County Probate Records.

Seavers in the News - Genealogist Henry Gardner Seaver Dies in 1931

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a semi-regular feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Brooklyn [N.Y.] Daily Eagle newspaper dated Sunday, 18 October 1931:

"H.G. Seaver Rites at Yonkers; Lived Here Many Years

"Descendant of Massachusetts Colonial Family Dies on 86th Birthday

"Funeral services will be held today for Henry Gardner Seaver, former well-known Brooklynite who died Friday in Yonkers, N.Y., on his 86th birthday.

"Mr. Seaver was a member of an old American family. He was born in Brooklyn, the son of Benjamin Franklin Seaver, a pioneer drygoods manufacturer here. His mother was Lucy Barrett Jewett and his grandfather was Benjamin Seaver, twice Mayor of Boston. His ancestor, Robert Seaver, settled in Massachusetts in 1634.

"Mr. Seaver was an ardent advocate of the Single Tax movement and was an active worker in the Citizens Union in the early days of that organization. He had wide knowledge of current affairs and had written many letters to The Eagle on topics of the day.

"For the pat 20 years he had devoted most of his time to genealogical research. His wife, the late Cornelia Latta Seaver, died here in 1922. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Floyd W. Fiske of Westfield, N.J. and Mrs. Edric B. Smith of Yonkers; a son, Henry B. Seaver of New Brunswick, N.J., and eight grandchildren. He was a member of the Unitarian Church of Plainfield, N.J. and Westfield Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

"Services will be held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Smith, 35 Windsor Terrace, Yonkers at 2:30 o'clock and interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery."

Henry Gardner Seaver was born 16 October 1846 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Lucy Barrett (Jewett) Seaver. He married Cornelia Ridgeway Latta (1854-1922) on 7 October 1880 in Brooklyn, and they had three children, Emma Latta (Seaver) Fiske (1881-????). Laura Jewett (Seaver) Smith (1884-1944) and Henry Blanchard Seaver (1888-1974).

I had all of them in my RootsMagic family tree database, but I'm missing death dates for several of the descendants and their spouses.

Henry Gardner Seaver is my 7th cousin three times removed. He was a major contributor to Jesse Montgomery Seaver's The Seaver Genealogy typescript available at the Family History Library and on Ancestry.com.

MyHeritage Launches New Filtering System for DNA Matches

We’re excited to announce the release of a new feature — a brand new filtering system for DNA Matches!

Thanks to the growth of our database, most users on MyHeritage now have thousands of DNA Matches. Managing all those DNA Matches, and making sense of them has become a challenge — and this is exactly where the new filtering system comes in!

Filtering lets you view a subset of your DNA Matches at a time, focusing on those that match particular criteria, of more interest to you. We’ve added a beautiful user interface to the DNA Overview page that lets you filter your DNA Matches easily by relationship, by country or by ethnicity. And we’ve added a powerful filter toolbar that lets you do all that, and much more. Using the new filter toolbar, you can combine multiple filters, and filter matches by additional criteria such as those that have a family tree, have shared ancestral surnames with you or have Smart Matches™ with you.

Filtering of DNA Matches can be combined with sorting and searching. For example, you can easily find all your DNA Matches that include “Gordon” in the name of the match or as an ancestral surname, filtering them to view only those who have a particular ethnicity and live in a particular country, while sorting them alphabetically or by the amount of shared DNA.

These powerful capabilities, together with the high accuracy of the matches, make MyHeritage’s DNA Matches the most powerful and easy to use DNA matches on the market today — in our humble opinion. Anyone who has taken a MyHeritage DNA test or has uploaded DNA data from another service can now take advantage of our new filtering system for DNA Matches, and it’s free! (Some advanced features in the DNA Match review page require a subscription, such as viewing the ethnicity results of a DNA Match).

As part of this update, we’ve also made some improvements to the user interface of the DNA Matches in general. For example, we placed ethnicity and DNA Matches on two adjacent tabs to make it very easy to switch from one to the other for any of the DNA kits you manage. Viewing family trees of your DNA Matches now uses the Pedigree View.

Many users have told us that we have the best user interface for DNA Matches, and now we’ve made it even better.
