4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

John Horton was born 6 June 1672 in Milton, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas and Sarah (--?--) Horton[1-3].

He married Mehitable Garnsey (1673-1742) in about 1690 in Milton[1-3,6].  She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (--?--) Garnsey of Milton.  They had six children, all born in either Rehoboth or Swansea, Massachusetts[1]:

*  Sarah Horton (1692-1725), married 1712 John Millard (1692-1728).
*  Jonathan Horton (1695-1774), married (1) 1725 Ann Millard (1706-1751);(2) 1753 Elizabeth Perry (1718-1776).
*  John Horton (1696-1796), married (1) 1719 Mary Chase (1695-1734); (2) 1756 Elizabeth --?--) (1705-1784).
*  Thomas Horton (1698-1733), married 1721 Kesiah Carpenter (1697-1763.
*  Jotham Horton (1705-1797), married 1729 Hannah Martin (1704-1739).
*  Hezekiah Horton (1714-1787), married 1735 Mary Martin (1715-1802).

The inventory of the intestate estate of John Horton's father, Thomas Horton, was taken in 1716, and is in Bristol County (Massachusetts) Probate Records, Volume 3, Pages 270, 273, on FHL Microfilm 0,461,882)[4].  The court record says:
"I Nath-ll Byfield Esqr Duly appointed & Commissioned to be the Judge of Probate & Wills within the County of Bristol.  To John Horton of Rehoboth in the County of Bristol eldest son of Thomas Horton of Rehoboth afore-sd Deceas'd Intestate.  Trusting in your Care and Fidelity, I commit unto you full power to administer all and singular the Rights and Credits Goods & Chattels of the sd Dec'd..."

The Inventory of the Estate of Thomas Horton late of Rehoboth deceased was taken on 28 March 1716 by John West and James Bowen.  The inventory totaled 342 pounds, 9 shillings, 2 pence.  John Horton presented the inventory of the estate of his father to the Probate court at Bristol, and it was accepted by the Court, recorded 22 May 1716.  There is no record of the distribution of the estate to the heirs or of the Account of the administrator.
John Horton was taxed in Milton from June 1691 to January 1691/2, again in November 1693, and finally in April and August 1695. He is not on the tax lists of June to November 1692, January 1692/3, nor any list of 1694[1].

His final move to the Swansea-Rehoboth area must have come between August 1695 and January 1695/6. John was a member of the Rehoboth militia, Capt. Hunt's Co., on 24 Nov. 1710[1].

On 3 Nov. 1725 John signed the guardianship papers for Solomon and Simeon Horton, sons of his brother Solomon. The same signature was found on the bond, signed 17 July 1733, on the estate of Thomas Horton. This is further proof that the Thomas Horton who died 10 July 1733 at age 35 was a son of John Horton[1].

On 8 April 1723, John Horton of Rehoboth, sold land in Rehoboth for £8, to Stephen Moulton. The deed was signed by John and Mehitable and witnessed by Jotham Horton and Mary Horton. Recorded 15 Jan. 1723/4[1]. (Bristol County. Deeds, Volume 15, page 209)

On 3 April 1724, John Horton, yeoman of Rehoboth, sold 22 acres of land to John Martin for £60[1]. The land was on the side of Rock River near Manwhague Plains. Signed by John Horton, witnessed by John Horton, Jr. and Jotham Horton[1]. (Bristol County. Deeds, Volume 16, page 64)

On 21 June 1725, John Horton of Rehoboth, for "great love and natural affection which I have for my son Jonathan Horton of Rehoboth, shoemaker," gave him a piece of land of 27 1/2 acres in Rehoboth, westerly of the stream called Rocky River. Signed by John Horton, witnessed by Thomas Horton and Jotham Horton[1]. (Bristol County. Deeds, Volume 17, page 523)

On 26 Jan. 1753, Jotham Horton and Hezekiah Horton of Rehoboth, yeoman, for good causes quitclaimed to Jonathan Horton some land in the southwest corner of the homestead farm on which "... our honored father John Horton late of Rehoboth dwelt...", bounded northwest by the highway, southwest by Jonathan Horton's homestead, and east by Jonathan's land. Signed by Jotham Horton and Hezekiah Horton, witnessed by John Horton and Nathan Horton[1]. (Bristol County. Deeds, Volume 4, page 535)

John Horton died perhaps in 1752, certainly before 26 January 1753 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, based on the 1753 land deed of Jotham and Hezekiah Horton[1].

There is no known burial location, but there is a Find A Grave memorial with a death date of 15 October 1742, which is the day Mehitable (Garnsey) Horton died[5].

There is no probate record in Bristol County, Massachusetts probate court abstract records for John Horton.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1672 Birth Record of John Horton in Milton, Massachusetts

  It's time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings for Treasure Chest Thursday.

The treasure today is the 1672 birth record of John Horton in Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts:
The birth record is the second record of the Horton section:

The transcription of this birth record is:

"HORTON, John,  Son of Thomas, June 6, 1672"

The source citation for this record is:

 Peter Thacher; Hannah Vose, Milton records : births, marriages and deaths, 1662-1843 (Boston, Mass. : A. Mudge & Son, 1900), Births, page 33, John Horton entry, 6 June 1672; indexed database with images, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com).

This record is a Derivative Source, with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the birth of John Horton.  The original record is probably in a Milton town record book that is not extant.

John Horton (1672-1752) was born in Milton, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas and Sarah (--?--) Horton.  He married Mehitable Garnsey (1673-1742), the daughter of John and Elizabeth (--?--) Garnsey, in about 1690 in Milton.  They had seven children.

John and Mehitable (Garnsey) Horton are my 7th great-grandparents.  I am descended through their son John Horton (1696-1796), who married Mary Chase (1695-1734) in 1719 in Swansea, Massachusetts.

John Haughton (1647-1705) married (1) Hannah  --?-- in about 1675, perhaps in Boston.  There is no record that provides Hannah's name at the time of marriage.  They had four children, all probably born in Boston:

*  Hopestill Horton (ca 1674-1734), married 1698 Ebenezer Snow (1680-1725).
*  Dorothy Horton (ca 1680-1738), married 1701 David Doane (1674-1748).
*  Samuel Horton (ca 1686-1778), married 1714 Hannah Atwood (1686-1771).
*  John Horton (ca 1688-1710).

John Haughton married, in about 1694 probably in Boston, 2) Ruth Browne (1668-????), daughter of John and Hester (Makepeace) Browne of Marlborough, Massachusetts.  They had four children, the first two probably born in Newbury, Massachusetts and the next two probably born in New London, Connecticut:

*  Obediah Haughton (ca 1695-1773), married 1719 Mary Leverick.
*  Makepeace Haughton (ca 1696-1773), married 1725 Joanna Coffin (1701-1781)
*  Hannah Haughton (1700-????)
*  Abiall Haughton (1703-????)

John Houghton of New London wrote a will on 25 March 1704 which was proved in the New London County Probate Court on 16 November 1705.  In the will, he appointed his wife Ruth to be executrix of his estate, and bequeathed his entire estate to his present wife, Ruth, for her support and care of their children.  He also bequeathed land in Cascoe Bay given to him by his wife's father, John Browne, to his youngest sons Obadiah and Makepeace Houghton, and if they do not survive, then to his daughters Hannah and Abiell by Ruth.   He mentions his older sons John and Samuel [in Eastham at this time], and "other children," and leaves it to Ruth's discretion to give them some of the personal estate.  The will was witnessed by Joshua Bills, C. Luiver Davis and Samuel Chester.

An inventory of the estate of John Houghton was taken on 4 June 1705 by James Morgan and James Avery.  The inventory totals £19-5s-6d.

John and Hannah (--?--) Haughton are my 7th great-grandparents, through their son Samuel Horton (1686-1788) who married Hannah Atwood (1686-1771) in 1714 in Eastham, Massachusetts.

52 Ancestors - Week 358: #569 Hannah (--?--) Haughton (ca 1650-ca 1690) of Boston, Massachusetts

Hannah --?-- (1650-1690)  is number 569 on my Ahnentafel List, my 7th great-grandmother, who married #568  John Haughton (1647-1705)  in about 1675, probably in Boston, Suffolk County,  Massachusetts.

I am descended through:

*  their son #284 Samuel Horton (1686-1778) who married #285 Hannah Atwood (1686-1771) in 1714.
*  their son #142 Nathaniel Horton (1721-1771) who married  #143 Eunice Snow (1722-1816) in 1742.
*  their daughter #71 Hannah Horton (1761-1797)who married #70 Thomas Dill (1755-1839)  in 1782.
*  their daughter  #35 Elizabeth Horton Dill (1791-1869) who married  #34 Alpheus Smith (1802-1840)  in 1826.
*  their daughter, #17 Lucretia Townsend Smith (1828-1884) who married #16 Isaac Seaver (1823-1901) in 1851.
*  their son #8 Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922) who married #9 Hattie Louisa Hildreth (1857-1920) in 1874.
*  their son #4 Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942) who married #5 Alma Bessie Richmond (1882-1962) in 1900.
*  their son #2 Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983) who married #3 Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002)  in 1942.
*  their son #1 Randall Jeffrey Seaver (1943-living)

*  Name:               Hannah  --?-- [1–2]

*  Sex:                   Female

2)  INDIVIDUAL EVENTS (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

*  Birth:                 about 1650, Massachusetts, United States
*  Death:                about 1690 (about age 40), Massachusetts, United States

3)  SHARED EVENTS (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

*  Spouse 1:               John Haughton (1647-1705)
*  Marriage 1:            about 1675 (about age 25), probably Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States[1-2]

*  Child 1:                  Hopestill Horton (ca 1677-1734)
*  Child 2:                  Dorothy Horton (ca 1680-1738)
*  Child 3:                  Samuel Horton (ca 1686-1778)
*  Child 4:                  John Horton (ca 1688-1710)

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Margaret Horton Weiler wrote a periodical article "Descendants of John Haughton (Horton) of Eastham" for the Cape Cod Genealogical Society bulletin[1] and she also wrote the book Descendants of John Horton of Boston, Massachusetts and New London, Connecticut, through his son, Samuel Horton of Eastham, Massachusetts[2].  The sketch for John Horton/Haughton included:
"John Horton (Haughton) lived in Boston, MA with his wife, Hannah, perhaps the Hannah Harden, daughter of Joseph and Mary Long, who died in Boston 7 Jan 1690."
The two resources indicate that the Hannah Harden who died in 1690 might be the daughter of Joseph and Mary Long, but did not have the Horton or Haughton surname.  Harden is another possibility, but there is no authoritative evidence.

Since John Haughton was born in about 1647, it is likely that Hannah --?-- was born about 1650, perhaps in Boston.

John married Hannah  --?-- in about 1675, perhaps in Boston.  There is no known record that provides Hannah's name at the time of marriage.  They had four children, all were probably born in Boston, and Samuel's birth was recorded there:

*  Hopestill Horton (1677-1734), married 1698 Ebenezer Snow (1680-1725).
*  Dorothy Horton (1680-1738), married 1701 David Doane (1674-1748).
*  Samuel Horton (1686-1778), married 1714 Hannah Atwood (1686-1771).
*  John Horton (1688-1710).

It is likely that John Haughton moved his family to Eastham, Massachusetts in or before about 1690, and that is where daughters Hopestill and Dorothy, and son Samuel, married and made their home, and son John died there in 1710.

Hannah may have died between 1688 and about 1694, when John married again to Ruth Browne of Boston.

There are no known death or burial records for Hannah (--?--) Haughton/Horton in Massachusetts records.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Margaret Horton Weiler wrote the book Descendants of John Horton of Boston, Massachusetts and New London, Connecticut, through his son, Samuel Horton of Eastham, Massachusetts[2].  The sketch for John Horton/Haughton included:
"John Horton, father of Samuel, was recorded in Boston tax lists of 1674, 1684, 1686, 1688 and 1695."
 John Haughton was born in about 1647, probably in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony, probably to Richard and Sarah (--?--) Haughton of Boston[1-2].

He married (1) Hannah  --?-- in about 1675, perhaps in Boston[1-2].

*  John Horton (ca 1688-1710).

John's father, Richard Haughton, a mariner who resided in New London, Connecticut, died in 1682 in Wethersfield, Connecticut.  His estate was proved in Hartford, Connecticut, but he did not identify his children.

After Hannah died in about 1690, John Haughton probably moved to Newbury, Massachusetts and perhaps to Eastham, Massachusetts for a time (daughters Hopestill and Dorothy married there, and sons Samuel and John resided there the rest of their lives), and then to New London, Connecticut and was a shipwright there.

John Haughton married, in about 1694 probably in Boston, 2) Ruth Browne (1668-????), daughter of John and Hester (Makepeace) Browne of Marlborough, Massachusetts[3].  They had four children, the first two probably born in Newbury, and the next two probably born in New London:

*  Obediah Haughton (ca 1695-1773), married 1719 Mary Leverick.
*  Makepeace Haughton (ca 1696-1773), married 1725 Joanna Coffin (1701-1781)
*  Hannah Haughton (1700-????)
*  Abiell Haughton (1703-????)

John Houghton died before 4 June 1705 in New London at about age 58 when an inventory of his estate was taken[3].  There is no known burial location for him.

John Houghton of New London wrote a will on 25 March 1704 which was proved in the New London District Probate Court on 16 November 1705[2]. ????? Davis and Samuel Chester.

An inventory of the estate of John Houghton was taken on 4 June 1705 by James Morgan and James Avery.  The inventory totals £19-5s-6d.
